Holick, Jean BALLSTON LAKE Jean (Shortino) Holick passed away peacefully in the arms of her loving family on Tuesday, January 12, 2016. Jean heroically survived breast cancer for many years. She was born in Rochester, to Carmel and Manuel Shortino on March 6, 1938. She graduated from St. Agnes High School and Miss McCarthy's Business School in Rochester. While still a teenager, she met her husband of 58 years, Jan Holick, who was attending the University of Rochester. He was recruited to play her boyfriend in the senior play. They were married shortly after graduation and Jean became a Naval Officer's wife. His career took the young couple to Norfolk, Virginia, Newport, Rhode Island and Brunswick, Georgia. After discharge, the couple moved to Albany, (where they had two babies) then his career took them from Albany to Syracuse, (one more baby), Atlanta, Ga., Pittsford, N.Y., Greeneville, Tenn. (another baby), Margate, Kent, England (still another baby) and finally Clifton Park where they happily settled for over 42 years. In each location, Jean made a comfortable home for all of them using her exceptional decorating magic. Jean enjoyed a successful career as an instructor for Diet Workshop. Then when her children were grown, Jean helped her husband by managing Holick Associates, Inc. She ultimately started Help Wanted Services, a temporary help service and in-house secretarial service for executive suites in Clifton Park. Tennis was Jean's passion, and for years she coordinated USTA teams and local players. She was a member of Tri-City Racquet Club and Sportime in Schenectady. Some of her happiest moments were playing tennis in Schenectady Central Park. Her other passion was bridge. She belonged to the Library Bridge Marathon, the Southern Saratoga County Marathon and JCC Duplicate. She was a skilled seamstress and accomplished in knitting and crochet. She also dabbled in watercolors and oils. Jean served as past Secretary and past vice president of the Southern Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce, past secretary and past vice president of the Board of Directors of CAPTAIN Youth and Family Services, member of the class of 1987 Saratoga Chamber Leadership Saratoga, and candidate for Southern Saratoga Woman of Enterprise. To Jean, family was everything and she celebrated with them every chance she got. If it was Sunday, Jean was preparing for the weekly gathering we lovingly called "meatballs", a tradition that was filled with laughter, love and good sauce. In addition to her husband, she is survived by children Jan, Jr. (Jennifer) Holick, Malta, Julie Holick, Ballston Lake, Timothy (Cecilia Poskus) Holick, North Brunswick, N.J., Amy (Theodorus) Standaert, Clifton Park, William (Natalie) Holick, Shawnee, Kan.; her sisters Lorraine (Ben) Cassarino of Canandaigua, N.Y. and Anita (the late Raymond) Elsbree of Penfield, N.Y. Ten grandchildren, Nicole and Jack Holick, Curtis and Rachel Holick, Emily, Sam and Billy Standaert, Reagan, Audrey and Colby Holick. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, her bridge partners, tennis friends and the "YaYas". She is predeceased by her parents, aunts, uncles and cousins. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff at The Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital. We are so grateful for the kind, compassionate care provided to Jean and to our entire family. At Jean's request, there will be no calling hours. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of St. Edward the Confessor, 569 Clifton Park Center Road, Clifton Park, on Friday, January 15, 2016, at 10 a.m. Interment services will follow at 12:30 p.m. at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville. Contributions in Jean's memory may be made to CAPTAIN Youth and Family Services, 5 Municipal Plaza, Clifton Park, NY 12065. With confidence, the family has placed their trust in the loving care of the Townley & Wheeler Funeral Home, 21 Midline Road, Ballston Lake, and they encourage you to view and leave messages on Jean's Book of Memories at TownleyWheelerFH.com

I met Jean on the tennis court in Clifton Park and played with her for years. I have to say I grew to love her immediately with her wonderful laugh and positive attitude and spirit. We can all only hope to carry on the way she did in the face of adversity. I love her today and will love her always when we spend eternity praising God and thanking him for our wonderful lives here on earth. She did hers well. God Bless you Jean

Dear Jan, Jennifer, & Amy,
Thinking of you all in this moment of deep sadness
In the loss of your wife and Mom. She always spoke to me of how she enjoyed our New Yorkers
Polka band and her new lap top computer. I will
miss these conversations at the polls. I am presently in Florida until April so I am unable to
personally express my sorrow. I will rember Jean
in my Rosary prayers for her soul and for your family.
The Lord be with you,
