Roy Horlock Obituary

Roy M. Horlock, Sr.
1924-2016
Roy M. Horlock, Sr. passed away peacefully on Tuesday, the 9th of February 2016, surrounded by his family. He was 91.
Roy was born in San Antonio on the 22nd of May 1924, to Henry Edwin and Eugenia Lindley Horlock of Navasota, Texas. He is now in heaven, reunited with many dear ones who have gone before him.
He is preceded in death by his loving wives, Margaret Boudreaux, Marion Clark Hunter and Elsa Jean Daniels. He is survived by his children, Kathy Baker and her husband Dick, Nancy Lisenby and her husband John, Peggy Dickerson and her husband Bob, Roy Horlock, Jr. and his wife Natalie, Brad Horlock, Brenda Jewett and her husband Brad; grandchildren, Cynthia Morgan Lisewski and her husband Matt; David Lisenby, Callie Griffin and her husband Garrett, Gray Lisenby and his wife Jessica; Bobby Dickerson and his wife Kaity, Audrey Margaret Dickerson, Hank Horlock Dickerson; Roy Horlock III, Keller, Ryan, and Gray Horlock; Katherine Horlock; Jacob, Clark, Lela, and Ava Jewett; and great-grandchildren Kaylee and Gavin Lisewski; Tommy and Hank Lisenby; Jack, Sam, and Will Griffin; and Addison and Grayson Lisenby. He also leaves behind a host of Lindley family relatives; cousin, Frank Horlock, Jr.; and many nieces and nephews.
Roy graduated from Navasota High School and earned a B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Houston. In 1959, he went into business for himself. The Horlock Company built, owned, and managed over 2,000 apartments and office buildings in and around the Houston Galleria area. He was past president of the Houston Apartment Association, vice-president of the Texas Apartment Association, charter member and past director of the Houston Racquet Club, past member of the River Oaks Rotary Club, and a founding member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church, serving on the vestry. He was a member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas and past director on the Board of Washington on the Brazos State Park Association.
He enthusiastically poured his full energy into everything he did, determined to get as much out of life as possible. Never one to sit still, he had no idea how to stroll. He walked as fast as possible at all times, for there were always more "things to do and people to see." Hunting and fishing were life-long passions which he discovered during his high school years in Navasota, and he pursued both all over the world. He relished the game of tennis, which he played two or three times a week well into his eighties, making many life-long friends along the way. Weekends spent with family at his beloved Hidden Creek Farm in Independence were some of his happiest times. He loved reliving his many African safaris in the trophy room, and he especially enjoyed working in his vegetable garden. He was a happy man when he shared a bag of his delicious tomatoes, zucchini, or new potatoes. He was loved by many, and will be missed by all.
A memorial service celebrating Roy's life is to be held at two o'clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 12th of February, at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road in Houston, where the Rev. Dr. Russell J. Levenson, Jr., Rector, and the Rev. Martin J. Bastian, Vice-Rector, are to officiate.
Serving as honorary pallbearers are Bob Beamon, Bob Greer, Alan Gugenheim, Larry O'Donnell, Fred Saunders, and brother-in-law Harry Slye.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent Bagby Parish Hall.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Roy's name be directed to the Brookwood Community, 1752 FM 1489, Brookshire, TX, 77423; or to the charity of one's choice.

While Mr. Horlock had much success and many satisfactions in his life, his single greatest joy was his family. He faced each day with resolve and a positive attitude....the result was a life well lived!

Sad to hear of Roy's passing. I remember many great visits to Horlock House in Navasota. My grandmother, Effie Liles Horlock, was born there, as was my mother Elizabeth Liles Erskine. When the house was donated, it was filled with beautiful period furniture and an outstanding Horlock Family History Museum upstairs. Pleased to have met Roy at the dedication job the house. Sadly, the City of Navasota has removed all the beautiful furniture and the upstairs Museum and turned Horlock House into a free place to live for "starving artists". Roy was a wonderful man and will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In reading this loving obituary, I am reminded of watching TV with Brenda, Brad and Roy in the Trophy Room on Hunterwood Dr. and sitting in wide-eyed amazement at those animals. I am also reminded of the vegetable garden tended to in the back and swimming in the pool on occasion. Your dad was always a charmer and open-armed to me through my childhood. Most recently, I enjoyed seeing him out at Post Oak LL watching Keller on the field. What a life! He will be greatly missed, but he is now welcomed with open arms by many in heaven!

Mr. Horlock was the patron saint and employer of many rowdy high school boys. We are grateful for the jobs, but especially the memories of him and putting up with our shenanigans; he was always kind & engaging with a big smile.
Fondly, Memorial High School Boys
