October 23, 1922 - July 13, 2016
Maria V Hernandez born October 23, 1922, went into the loving arms of the Lord on July 13, 2016 at the blessed age of 93.
She attended Johnson Elementary, David Crocket Elementary and Francisco Ruiz Elementary. During the time of the Great Depression her parents had to overcome many struggles. At a very young age while in 3rd grade Maria had to quit school due to the loss of her father and assist in providing for the family. She worked many years by helping her mother run the small family business Valdez Grocery Store, located on the Westside of town at the corner of Tampico and Pinto, also traveling with family as a migrant worker as far as Michigan and Wisconsin. In the early 1940's after returning to San Antonio she continued to help at the Valdez Grocery store. While working there she met Guadalupe Hernandez, a young man that had just moved from Seguin to San Antonio.
Her family departed up north as they had done for many years this time she left part of her heart behind. Guadalupe felt the same, therefore he left to Michigan to follow the love of his life. They returned to San Antonio and later got married on February 14, 1943 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Shortly after they started a family of their own with the birth of their first child, Guadalupe Hernandez Jr, on January 24, 1944.
She continued to work at the family business through the mid-1960s and maintained a household for her family. Her gracious heart and unconditional love for family lead her to help raise numerous nieces and nephews. In 1965 after the loss of her mother she decided to close the family store. The Grocery store was later converted into a family home where she delivered 8 of her 11 children with the assistance of a midwife.
Maria was a very spiritual, loving, caring, energetic and vigorous woman who was not your ordinary stay at home house wife. She loved cheering on the San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Cowboys. She enjoyed spending countless hours listening to Joel Osteen spiritual guidance along with a variety of music. One of her favorite singers was Vicente Fernandez whom she was lucky enough to see live with the company of her daughters. She enjoyed trips to Eagle Pass, Corpus Christi, California, Michigan, Mexico, and San Juan, TX to visit the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan Del Valle National Shrine. "My home is in heaven I'm just traveling through this word", Maria is now on her greatest journey into the loving arms of our Lord.
Maria was preceded in death by her loving husband of 38 years, Guadalupe Hernandez Sr., her parents Ramona and Leonardo Valdez, her daughter Esperanza Hernandez and son Ramiro Hernandez.
Maria leaves behind her loving children, Guadalupe Hernandez (Juana), Lidia Marin (Carlos Sr.), Yolanda Barco (Eleazar), Sylvia Hernandez, Ester Bramasco (Jose), Ruben Hernandez Sr. (Rosa), Linda Salazar (Louie Sr.), Norma Hernandez and Irma Grant (Ralph). She had 21 Grandchildren, Alicia Rake, Sylvia Kelly, Gloria Dusek, Angelica Hernandez, Carlos Marin Jr, Jesse Marin, Victoria Kukla, Veronica Sparks, Valerie Barco, Vicente Barco, Lisa Marie Salcedo, Michael Hernandez, Jeanette Bramasco, Luz Bramasco, Dianna Carreon, Ruben Hernandez Jr., Roger Hernandez, Raul Hernandez, Louie Salazar Jr., Jonathan Salazar, and Hailey Grant. She had 40 Great Grand Children, 4 Great Great Grandchildren of which twin boys have not been born, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, along with her four legged best friends Princess and Lady.
