It's been 10 short, not long years, bud. It's seems like yesterday that we were all laughing it up in Iraq.... playing NCAA football and talking about what we'd be doing when we got home. Well brother, you are Home... you are at Home with The Lord. There have few days when I haven't thought about you and the laughter you brought to so many people. I appreciate your friendship, I honor your memory, and I can't wait to see you again. Love you brother.....keep an eye on us all.

Until we meet again,

Ben

I first met Nathan in our Army AIT in Augusta, GA 2002. He always positive attitude, a great team player. Never thought that our paths would cross again after graduation. He went to Ft. Bragg and I went back home to CT being a National Guardsman. The invasion of Iraq changed that though. I was activated and so was the 82nd. Our paths crossed again in late 2003 when he and others from the 82nd came to our unit for support. He traveled down to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait where I was stationed at the time. They got a little break from Iraq and we helped show them a thing or two on how we conducted maintenance on our electronics. Of course they had to go back to their unit, and we parted ways again. I still remembering the day I heard that his UH-60 went down, and the great sadness I felt. I later saw his name in the Army Times, but it still seemed so surreal. As I prepare to go back over for a third tour, I think of you and the sacrifice you made for all of us. I thank you.

Today for some reason you reached from Heaven and touched my heart. You so deep in my spirit today. I so wish that I could talk to you. Tell our grandparents hello and I miss them very very much. It is truly not the same here without you. It is hard being the oldest down here by myself. You would not believe how much Devin reminds me of you. He has a way of making me laugh and feel better just like you did. My heart is so full and the tears are soo hard to fight back. So many of my loved ones have joined you up that, I know you are not lonely. As I prepare to send a special person to me to the same battle ground that you stood bravely on. Please lil big cousin watch over my blessing, and send him back home to me safe and sound. Love Kiersten.

Supressed feelings always have a way of resurfacing, and the feelings that I feel for you have not faded away the love is still and forever will be there. The memories of us growing up, running around in Wadley during the summer or of me visiting you during the summer are some of the most cherished. I miss the easy going but very silly spirit that filled my life and always kept me with a smile or gut busting laugh!!! A hand that was always outstrecthed and ready to help with a ear and a heart always willing to listen, you are miss dearly. Love and Miss you cousin!!! I know that you are safe at home in the aram of our Heavenly Father.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

This young man served his country without fear and paid the ultimate price. I imagine he has lots of family who miss him dearly as I do my nephew Dane Balcon who lost his life in Balad Iraq 5 Sept 07. I find deep pride in the mission Nathaniel and Dane carried out and pray that God comforts your family as he does mine!

I can't even find the words...I lost my 19 year old son--5 Sept 2007, Balad, Iraq. I am absolutely devastated and I know that you are too...but find comfort in the fact that we will see our loved ones, our heroes again. Do I wish that I could trade places with my son? ABSOLUTELY not. He is in the arms of our Lord--"And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away" ~Rev 21:4

To My Darling Nate:

Not a day goes by that I don't think about you and all the times that we shared together. You are my best friend and only God knows where our friendship could have ended up at. I will never forget the day that I got the news. I was in Korea and got an email from SFC Moore telling me how it happened. I cried for like two weeks straight. I could not believe that one of the best things that have ever happened to me was taken away.

I want to thank you for all of the laughs, smiles, goofy jokes, hanging out at school or after school, writing me during Basic Training, coming to see me at AIT, surprising me by showing up at my doorstep on my birthday when I thought you were deployed to Afghanistan. You have given me a lifetime of memories and I can't thank you enough. You were there for me through thick and thin. When I felt that I didn't have anyone, you were there with me, holding my hand, and telling me that everything is going to work out. You will truly be missed. Give my Mother big kiss and hug for me and tell her I am coming. I will always love you.

Nathaniel soon it will be 27 months since you were taken. You are a hero and you will never be forgotten.

I send each of you a hug from the most inner part of my heart.

I have just learned of the death of Spc. Nathaniel H. Johnson. As the State Chaplain of the Georgia Sons Of The American Revolution and speaking for our President, George Thurmond and more than 1,400 SAR members around the State of Georgia, may I most humbly express the condolences of a grateful Society. Spc. Johnson, wrapped in the integrity of service to our nation and the inestimable values of duty, honor and country, stood on a wall of freedom for us all. His life and his love of country epitomized every attribute of patriotism the Sons Of The American Revolution hold dear. And, as Americans, we could never repay the debt we owe him ..!! Nor the debt we owe you… his family!!!

To the family of Nathaniel "Nate" Johnson,

I realize that you do not know me, but I wanted to take a moment to send my thoughts to you. I did not personally know your son. However, I am eternally grateful to him. He answered the call to defend me and my loved ones. To ensure that 'our' children have a safer America to grow up in. I have friends in the military, several of whom did know him personally. They sorely miss him as well. They speak highly of him as a good and close friend and they tell of him being an “exceptional soldier”. I cried when I heard of this loss. My heart is with you. And I pray for comfort and strength for all of you.

Hello Mr. and Mrs. Johnson;

I would like to tell you how proud I am of Nate as he was introduced to me. I met Nate when he was a freshman in highschool. JJEllis introduced him to me. I was her mentor. He was a total gentleman. He always had a smile on his face. I know he is smiling at the two of you and your family as you go through this time. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. May God continue to reign peace which surpasses all understanding. He was our local heroe and he will be truly missed.

To the Family of SPC Nathaniel Johnson:

I did not know you or your son, but I am truly sorry for your loss. I have been away from Augusta for almost 13 years now, yet your son and I still had some things in common like being in NJROTC at Glenn Hills and joining the military after high school. No longer residing in Augusta, I occasionally read the Chronicle online, and am, on today, just now reading about Nate.

Having been on a ship out to sea, and living in a Navy town, I can tell you that every military member is well aware of the intense, surreal possibility that someone they know might not come back; I've dealt with that during my career. Dealing with loss can be very hard. For me I think that dealing with the loss of a fellow servicemember, a fellow Augustan, a fellow cadet, and a fellow Spartan is hard to deal with...dealing with the loss of a brother in Christ makes it a little easier "for we know that all things work together for the good of them that love God, to them that are the called according to his purpose."

Just look at how many lives this young man touched! From the things that I've read in this guest book, he was a bright star in the lives of many people. Try to daily celebrate Nate's life, as well as cheerish the moments that you had with him.

Finally, please remember to hold on to your faith because, as Psalm 84:11 says, "For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly."

For anyone who may read this, on behalf of all servicemembers, thank you for your prayers, and please continue to pray for us, our families, and our leadership. And for the Johnson family, find strength and comfort in Jesus, and may God bless you and keep you now and forever.

Respectfully,

James A. "Tony" Lewis, GHHS Class of 1991

Nate,

I was totally devastated by the news at first but now my mind has been set at ease because I know that you are definitely in a better place now. Your family has been a strong encouragement for me in a time of need , because they have kept their faith alive. You were my best friend, my companion, and many other special things to me. The love that I had for you was so very unconditional. Thinking of the good times we shared helps me sleep at night and make it through my days. I will never ever forget you and I'll never stop loving you (not even in death). Rest in peace Nate Dawg....

Love,

Mr. and Mrs. Johnson,

Our deepest sympathies go out to you and your family on the loss of your son. While you don’t know us, we are your neighbors at the corner of Lumpkin Road and Lumpkin Park. I pray on a daily basis for the Service men and women fighting in defense of our country. I also pray for the families of those Service men and women. I pray daily that God will touch the hearts of those who have lost loved ones. I never realized that as I pass your house on an almost daily basis, that the prayer would be needed so very close to home. I truly pray that God will help ease your loss and comfort your hearts. Please know that I, as an Army Retiree thank you for the sacrifice that your son has made so that we might enjoy the freedoms that we have.

May God bless you and keep you,

Charlie and Debra Shaw

Nate,

It seems like only yesterday that I was at school watching you perform on the drill team with the rest of the crew. Though I graduated before you I still remember you and will always remember you as the boy who always had a smile on his face and I know that you are smiling down on us now from heaven's gate. May God bless and watch over your family in your absence from this earth. You have a soldier's heart and though we all are going to miss you, you passed from this world with the deepest honor of all... serving and protecting your country.

Especially to Felix and Phyllis,

My heart goes out to the both of you, as well as your entire family during your time of bereavement. I am sorry that I never got to know Nathaniel, but I have heard nothing but good things about him; and that makes him a very special person. I can only imagine the "pain of loss" that you all must feel, but I know that God is too wise and too just to make mistakes. He will give you the strength you will need now, and in the days to come. Just hold onto your Faith. Rest assured that you can be proud of him. Keep the memories of Nathaniel close. May your sadden hearts be lifted by them. Love and Prayers. God Bless, Cuz.
