November 2, 1949 - October 31, 2016
Kathryn A. Valdez, age 66, passed away on October 31, 2016 in San Antonio, Texas. She was born to Herbert and Annie Kelley on November 2, 1949 and was the oldest of 4 siblings.
Kathy was raised on Columbus Street near Santa Rosa Hospital in the loving home of her grandparents Sam and Isabel Madrid. After attending St. Mary's Catholic School, she graduated from Fox Tech High School and on August 3, 1968 married the love of her life, Pablo "Paul" Valdez. Kathy was a committed Army wife, spending two and half years in Okinawa, Japan, and two tours with her husband in Germany. During her time in Germany, she became actively involved with the community library, eventually dedicating 28 years of her career as a Library Technician at various Army Posts. She was assigned to the Medical Library in Wilford Hall at Lackland Air Force Base where she retired in 2010.
Kathy LOVED Fiesta and began a tradition of camping out with Paul to purchase parade tickets for her family and extended family, a tradition which is now carried on by the younger generation of cousins and friends. She and Paul would celebrate Fiesta by staying at the Downtown Hyatt Regency Hotel for several days to be close to the action. Throughout the years she helped Paul build his collection of over 600 Fiesta Medals, many of which he wore proudly each year on his Fiesta vest. In true Fiesta and San Antonio spirit, Kathy was a fan of a good margarita. She would always sample the margaritas at any restaurant she visited.
Although she was not formally trained as an architect, Kathy designed and oversaw improvements to the home that she shared with Paul, including a renovation of her kitchen and construction of an outdoor patio where she enjoyed countless hours watching birds and deer.
Sharing the family's heritage was important to Kathy. She repeated stories about her ancestors that she heard from her elders growing up so that younger family members could know and appreciate their roots. Kathy took pride in her grandchildren and found great joy in all of their accomplishments.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Paul;2 daughters Patricia Valdez (Seth Clark) and Pauline Valdez (Garrett Moench); grandchildren Elizabeth Zertuche, Victoria Zertuche, Matthew Zertuche, and Madelyne Newberry; and her youngest and precious granddaughter Isabella Moench; siblings Robert Villarreal (Barbara), Kristine Kelley, and Javier Salas; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and life-long friends.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 8th, 6:00 P.M. at Porter Loring on McCullough.

Kathy, you were a wonderful person and friend.
I met you at Fox Tech High School, and then again in Okinawa.
We've been in touch since you found me through the internet about 1992.
Then years later, we met again. My wife Emi & I and my San Antonio family,
brothers and sisters, met you during Fiesta Week - that was a great day!
Now God will meet you and will take care of you and someday,
all your friends will be there.
May the love of God help you Paul and your family heal the pain of losing
someone so dear. God be with you.

Kathy and I met a very long time ago, in Okinawa. We immediately became fast friends and the memories of that time with her I shall always cherish. She had such joy in her heart and an easy laugh. I feel very lucky to have known her and I am very thankful to have reconnected with her a few years ago. My deepest sympathies to Paul and the girls and her entire family. I will always remember her and the great times we had together.

Kathy Ann Kelley Valdez... I'm still in shock and can't believe you're gone. I was so fortunate to visit with you and talk to you even though you were slipping away. I know you could hear me. I'll cherish the memory we had as little kids at your parent's home on Commerce and New Braunfels...then reconnecting when our Grandma Kelley passed away in 1996 and staying in each other's lives from then on...we miss your Facebook posts and I know Paul will miss the love of his life! Rest in peace Kelley girl!!! Love you!

My dearest cousin, I will always treasure our times around the table discussing and recording our family history with your mom. I will always be grateful for the fiesta traditions you started and for which we can now pass down to our children. Most of all, I will always be thankful that the Lord God put you into my life to always greet me with a smile and a warm hug. You will truly be missed. Until we meet again.
- Your cousin Vince.
