Kelly,
My wife and I helped chaperon my daughters 8th grave class to Washington DC last week and on the last day, we visited Arlington National Cemetary. After visiting some of my fellow marines in section 39, we had the honor of watching the pass by of the final laying to rest one of my fellow marines that was recently called home and you immediately came to mind. I know we were not exactly brothers per say, but I i was compelled to tell my wife and daughter about you.
Rest in Pease my friend!

Mr. and Mrs. Hornbeck and to Kelly’s children, I am a little lost for words at the moment, as I just learned about Kelly’s passing. Kelly and I served together at Fort Bragg from 1990 – 1996 and were good friends. When not in the field or deployed somewhere, we'd hook up and travel to Coats, NC to a buck out on Friday nights or wherever we counld find a place to ride bulls, then head to the honky-tonk enjoying an evening of bragging right of who did what when their bull turned out the cute and laugh at ourselve. I am also from Texas, Pearland to be exact and fellow Texans stuck together around Fort Bragg. Kelly and I both PCS’d around the fall of 1996 going separate ways and though I thought of him, especially whenever I needed a good story to tell, we just lost touch until today. Kelly was my friend and I am glad to have found him again. Rest in peace “meho” I will never forget you. Jim Mathis

I never got the chance to meet Kelly, but since the first week herobracelets.org opened their doors, I've had the honor of wearing his name around my wrist. From my senior prom, high school graduation, and college graduation, I don't go a single day without his name around my wrist. I am so proud to tell his story to everyone who asks what my bracelet means and although we never met in person, he has a cherished and permanent place in my heart. Thank you so much for everything, Mr. Hornbeck.

Mr. & Mrs. Hornbeck It has been almost six years since Kelly gave the ultimate sacrifice. I was in Samarra on that day. I was the ammo Sgt. for Task Force 1/66 Armor 4ID. Frequently he and his team would visit me and ask for extra ammo. He always insisted on first name basis of talk. He was a true hero and I will never forget him. I ran into an 82nd Airborne Trooper the other day at a 911 function and he told me Hornbeck Hall still stands at FOB Brassfield/Mora in Samarra. Always in our prayers. Sgt Carl McCoy

Mr and Mrs Hornbeck,
Although I've known that Kelly has been gone for awhile my deepest condolences go out to you. Kelly and I were team mates at Tarleton when he attended. I was one year ahead of him. I eventually enlisted myself after college and we crossed paths a couple times. It was funny because when he saw me he knew who I was after all those years. He was truly a great man and soldier and I'll never forget him or who he was. May the Lord give you peace and joy in knowing that you raised a special son. God Bless you both.

As a very wet behind the ears private assigned to the RECON platoon H Co. in TOG, I remember Specialist Hornbeck ordering me to perform a task. I dutifully replied back "Yes, Specialist." He looked back at me and told me to "Take the starch out of my undershorts". Talking with another buddy from TOG, he mentioned the web sites set up for Kelly. We commented on how squared away he was for only being a few years older than we were. I pray the Good Lord Bless the Hornbeck family. My condolences.

The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

I just learned last night about Kelly's death. What a loss to this world.
I met Kelly when he was stationed in Arlington, Va. with the Old Guard. I remember when I first met him I thought that there was something really special about him. Kelly was always larger than life!
He was a true soldier. Never in my life have I met anyone who loved this country as much as he did. And, because of that love he gave his life for it!
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

"To the family of MSG Kelly Hornbeck,
MSG Hornbeck was my drill instructor at Ft. Benning, GA and created the standard for which a soldier is be measured against in my mind. He always took the time to teach his soldiers what was going to keep them alive in combat, not just what was in the book. Because of his help I acheived my dream of becoming part of the 75th Ranger Regiment. I was lucky enough to thank him in person a few years later because before I left basic he made sure I had his number in case I was ever in Bragg so we could have a beers. I learned of his death while I was in country from a few other SF guys I ran into at FOB Warhorse. His loss takes a part of me that will always represent the best that the Military and Special Operations can produce. I will always thank God that MSG Hornbeck was part of my life, for his lessons helped keep myself and my men safe under fire. May he rest in peace. "To us and those like us.... Damn few left." -RLTW"

My condolances on the loss of "our" family member. I am not "related" (by blood) to your family, but having read the news about MSG Hornbeck, it really hit very close to home. I personally grieve for "our" loss. He is not only my military service "brother", but we both grew up in Fort Worth and attend Paschal ('85 & '86 respectively). Ironically, I came across my "brothers" news while researching information, to train deploying troops, for such an envoirnment. I will personally speak about MSG Hornbeck in the training I will conduct.
