James Sullivan Obituary

James Joseph Sullivan, Jr.

James Joseph Sullivan, Jr. passed away peacefully on May 1, 2018 at the age of 90, with his wife of 65 years, Jean Sullivan, by his side.

James was born June 17, 1927 in San Francisco to James and Josephine Sullivan. He attended St. Cecilia School, Lowell High School, and San Francisco City College. On August 16, 1952 Jim and Jean were married at Mission San Carlos Borromeo in Carmel, CA.

Jim was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in El Paso, Texas. He retired in 1981 from the San Francisco Police Department after 26 years of service. Jim decided, after a brief retirement, he missed working and started a new career at Brobeck Phleger and Harrison, LLP, in the city he loved.

Jim is survived by his wife Jean of San Rafael, his son's Mark (Barbara) of Dallas Texas, James (Janet) of Palm Desert, Patrick (Kelly) of Carmichael, CA and daughters Jeannie Platt (Cary) of Plano, Texas, and Maryanne Ralston (Jerry) of Templeton, CA. "Papa Jim" will be missed by his grandchildren Mia, August, Joseph and Jeannette Sullivan, Ryan and Emma Platt and James, Lauren and Grace Ralston. He is also survived by his loving sister Marian O'Donnell (Daniel deceased) of Seal Beach, with whom he spoke every day and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim will always be remembered for his smiling Irish eyes, quick wit, warm personality and for being a true gentleman.

The family would like to thank the extraordinary staff at the Nazareth House, who helped care for Jim the last 2 1/2 years of his life. He truly appreciated each and every one of them.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:00am on May 19th, 2018 at the Nazareth House in San Rafael.

Memorial remembrances may be made to the Nazareth House, 245 Nova Albion Way, San Rafael, CA 94903.

Dear Jean, Mark, James, Patrick, Jeannie and Maryanne,

I will never forget how kind and how full of enthusiasm Mr. Sullivan was. The Sullivan parents made Elena Circle feel like a safe and fun Village in which we could grow.

Each of you carries forward some of the beautiful qualities of your father; his intelligence and his whit; his kindness and his genuine interest in listening to and lifting the kids in the neighborhood; his dedication to, and his love for his family, which was beautiful gift to witness. And so in that, Mr. Sullivan lives on in you and in generations to come. We are grateful to him and to your family for the difference that he and Jean and all of you have made. Surrounding you with love,

Dear Sullivan Family,
Please accept my heartfelt sympathies for the loss of your husband, father and grandfather. My time with Jim was a short period in the early 80s, yet he left a lasting impression on me as a warm, welcoming and sharp-witted gentleman. Anytime I saw him, I always knew I was in for his mischievous banter.
It was by pure coincidence that I ran across Jim's obituary, and I view it as both a blessing and an opportunity to reconnect with this awesome family and one of my dearest friends, in particular.

My sincerest sorrow for your loss. Although our families only got together on a few random occasions? "Papa Jim" always allowed for fun to be had for all. Have only kept in touch with Jeannie but through her? Know you are all heartbroken. Much love to all.

While our paths never crossed, we both were born and raised in San Francisco and attended Lowell High School, although James was 6 years ahead of me. Also, we both lived in Terra Linda/San Rafael. I was there from 1058 to 1962 at 318 Holly Drive, before moving to a new Eichler in Upper Lucas Valley in 1962. That was one year after the Sullivan home was built in 1961,'My heart goes out to Jean and the family for the loss. God Bless You, Rick Bradley
