Rodney B. Mitchell

MITCHELL -- Rodney Bruce, founder and retired President of Houston-based investment advisory firm The Mitchell Group, died on December 4, 2018 in Rhinebeck, New York. He was 82. He was born on February 5, 1936 in Lubbock, Texas, to Leslie and Raye Mitchell. He was raised on the family's cotton farm in Crosbyton, Texas, before attending Harvard University, where he honed his card-playing skills and skipped classes to attend Red Sox games. Rodney was known by family, friends, and colleagues for his sharp mind, wicked sense of humor, and passionate love of sports and politics. He founded The Mitchell Group, a registered investment advisory firm specializing in the energy sector, in 1989. He served as the Chief Investment Officer until 2010 and as the President of the firm until his retirement in 2013. From 1970 to 1989, he served as President and Chief Investment Officer of Tallasi Management Company in New York City. Prior to this, Rodney was a Vice President at Kidder, Peabody & Co from 1962 to 1970 and participated in the Executive Training Program at J.P. Morgan from 1960 to 1962. He was an adviser to the American Foreign Policy Council on energy matters, a Trustee of Hampden-Sydney College, a member of the Board of Directors of Willbros Group, Inc., and a Trustee of the Sena Foundation. Rodney is survived by his five children: Leslie Clay Mitchell of New York City; Dana Larkin Mitchell of Red Hook, NY; Bradley Walker Mitchell of Houston, TX; Angus Parker Mitchell of Austin, TX; and Calum Wesley Mitchell of Dallas, TX, as well as his five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a future date.
