Barbara Jackson Obituary

Jackson, Barbara Noisette ALBANY Barbara Ann Noisette Jackson, 92, passed away after a brief illness on Tuesday, December 8, 2020, at Albany Medical Center. Barbara was a lifelong resident of Albany, living 91 years in her childhood home on Myrtle Avenue in the South End Mansion neighborhood. She was predeceased by her parents: her father John Noisette Sr. and her mother Queenie Brown; and her brother John Noisette Jr. Barbara worked in a number of capacities and titles throughout her life. She was a supervisor of housekeeping at Albany Medical Center and bookkeeper at Whitney M. Young Health Center. Following a dream of life outside of Albany, she lived for a short time in Jacksonville, Fla. and Augusta, Ga. However, her heart remained in Albany where she enjoyed life-long friends and her beloved family. Barbara was a devout Catholic, a communicant of the former St. John's Church, St. John's-St. Ann's Church and now the St. Francis of Assisi Church. She was a member of the Albany Loyal Temple #148 of the Elks where she enjoyed the fellowship of her sister Elks and the numerous conferences across the State and country. Barbara was an excellent seamstress, sewing beautiful clothes for her daughters as they grew up and for herself even up to her death. Notably, she created many a costume for the annual Masons' Potentate Balls. She loved crafts and she and her beloved younger sister, Josephine were often seen at craft shows at the Empire State Plaza. She had many interests and loved making and building things. One special interest of late was researching for photos of Albany's lost neighborhoods of the South End. She befriended Albany's official historian Tony Opalka and attended many of his presentations. In 2015 Paul Grondahl wrote a T.U. article about Barbara "On living 87 years in the same house, in South Mall's shadow" dated March 26, 2015. Sadly, four years later, there was a second article about her when her house was totally destroyed in a fire along with a number of other properties on Myrtle Avenue in August 2019. Devastated but not broken, she said: "No moaning and groaning for me, I'm ready to move on." - and that she did. She started her new life at the Glenmont Abbey, making new friends and creating new adventures. Barbara is survived by her four children: Dianne Jackson of Louisa, Va., Joanne Jackson of New Carrollton, Md., Linda Jackson-Chalmers (Bill) of Albany, and Howard Jackson Jr. of Albany. Also, survived by her sister Josephine Traynham, and her children, John and Yvonne Noisette; her brother John's children, Joseph El-Wise Noisette, Leonard and Mark Noisette, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren on the Jackson side of the family. Visitation will be Monday, December 14, from 3-6 p.m. at S.L. McLaughlin Funeral Home, 1226 Broadway, Albany. COVID-19 regulations will be strictly enforced. A private family funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, December 15, at 11 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi, 93 Fourth Ave. at Franklin St, Albany.

I had lost touch with Mrs Jackson after leaving work at Whitney Young but I will always remember her kindness and straight talk advice to a young man. She generously altered a suit coat for me and had me over for dinner at her house on Myrtle Avenue on at least one occasion. I´m happy to see she lived a long life. What a wonderful woman and friend she was to me.

I was able to help care for Barbara in the ICU shortly before she passed. Barbara loved Albany and shared with me many stories about the city she knew for over 90 years. Togetger, her and I called my father, another lifelong Albany resident, so they could share stories. My prayers go out to her family.

I worked with Barbara in the early 1970s at the Whitney Young Health Center administrative offices. Barbara’s commitment to the community and work ethic were key contributors to the success of the program. She was intelligent and had a wonderful sense of humor. It was my good fortune to get to know her and call her a friend. May she rest in the arms of God.
My thoughts and prayers go out to her family.
