Robert O'Connor Obituary

Robert (Bob) O'Connor
1937 - 2021
In San Francisco on January 15, 2021. An only child, born in San Francisco to John Joseph O'Connor and Beverly Carrie Given on November 11, 1937. Of Irish Catholic descent he attended Notre Dame Des Victoires Elementary and graduated from St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco and was a United States Navy Veteran who served overseas in Southeast Asia from 1957 through 1959. Robert worked for 30 years as a Computer Technician at Pacific Motor Trucking Lines (PMT).
Bob was a fantastic swing dancer and loved the likes of the music accompanied by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Bobby Darin, Ray Charles and Neil Diamond. He was a family man and delighted in our annual traditions, giving our mom a break; such as: trips to Marine World, Barnum & Bailey Circus, every 2nd Sunday of July Annual Family Picnic at Blackberry Farm...not to mention the weekend bowling and frequent trips to Candlestick Park to cheer on our SF Giants. He was a true fan of our SF Giants and SF 49ers.
Bob was a wonderful husband to his surviving wife Janice O'Connor of 63 years, the father of 8 children: Susan, Beverly (Brian), Mark, Colleen, Lisa (Jim), Donna (Ray), Chris and Kerry (Joe), grandfather of 13 and great grandfather of 1, with another on the way.
In his formative years he enjoyed learning new tax laws and preparing taxes for his family.
He fought a long battle after having a major stroke...no surprise there...he was a warrior to the end. We say Rest in Peace dear husband, dad, grandfather, great grandfather and buddy to all who knew him along with his dearest beloved friends David and Ardath Delee who have given unwavering support to his wife Janice since his rehabilitation began.
You shall be loved and missed forever, but never forgotten.
Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, January 28th from 3:00pm to 5:00pm at DUGGAN'S FUNERAL SERVICE – THE DUGGAN WELCH FAMILY, 3434 – 17th Street in San Francisco where COVID-19 attendance restrictions are in place. I had three life-long friends at NDV. Bob was one of the three. bob and I went to Camp marwedel together for one week when we were 10 years old. Then, again, we went to St. Mary's Summer camp for one week when we were 12 years old. We hung out together at camp and were always in trouble with the Christian Brothers who ran the camp. We had a few fights growing up...sometimes I won...sometimes he won...Bob was the quintessential, tough Irish kid...he wasn't afraid of anyone...I was there in class with him in the fourth grade when principal told him that his Mother had died. He was fond of my Mother and my Mom returned the fondness. I am saddened. RIP...Bobby....

I love you Gramps. You were a fighter, and I’m glad you’re not suffering anymore. I’ll never forget you with your video camera and the way you always said “I’m gonna get you!” With that little smirk. Can’t wait to have you give me a little punch on the chin in Heaven. Much love.

My dad, my hero. Thinking of all of the wonderful memories I have of you and knowing you are finally at rest and not in pain anymore gives me some comfort. You always had a kind word for everyone who entered our house and treated them with respect. I will miss your presence and your funny smile and your calm demeanor. I love you so much. RIP Dad ❤

I can still here that calm and soothing voice of his when he spoke to me. He was a very sweet, thoughtful, and sentimental man. His undying devotion and inexhaustible love for his family will never be forgotten. His impact on his children and grandchildren will be carried with all of us for the rest of our lives. There will never be another one like him and San Francisco has definitely lost some of it's charm due to his passing. As I continue my journey in life he will always be there with me even in the most challenging of times.

Love Always,
Christopher Cunningham
