To the Engler family,
Duty, honor, and selfless service are core tenets/values all soldiers of the U.S Armed Forces must internalize and embody to ameliorate a cohesive, hardcore, fighting unit . These are no different whether in business, sport or with family. In Vince Lombardi's famous 1970 speech "What It Takes To Be Number One" reflects these thoughts regarding leadership.
With regard to the aforementioned, Coach Engler was the apitomy of respect, commitment, and preparation. His "train the trainer" philosophy was a framework for teaching potential coaches, teachers, instructors or subject matter experts to enable them to train other people regardless of what business they're in. It was important to him, when reaching adulthood, we would have the "best tools" necessary to teach others.
Paying it forward, as a parent/teacher/coach, met that future generations have the best tools to become successful in adulthood/careers!
Why is all this important? As a high school student the examples Gary set lead me to retired careers in the military, education and coaching. As an athlete, my post high school success was greatly influenced by sound planning, preparation and focused execution while appropriately making adjustments along the way. High school is an immense time for cognitive growth into adulthood . . . and what an important time it was for me.
Coach Engler played an extremely import role in my life. I can't pay it back but I can pay it forward.
Thank You Coach

Gary Engler was more than a mentor, coach and teacher to young people. He also brought those same talents too many seniors as opportunities arose. As a senior who studied under Gary’s tutelage at the Avondale Bible study group I can attest to that. For me personally it was through his mentoring, coaching and teaching that I was brought to a close relationship with the Lord than I had previously known. I will miss Gary as will many others. But we will find comfort in the knowledge that through our friendship over many years, some of him will be in all of us. Our sincerest condolences to the Engler family.

Coach Engler was the best coach and physical education teacher I ever had. Every team member was important to him, and he gently and if needed not so gently pushed us to be the best athlete and more importantly the best person could be. A win was great, but a loss while it hurt for awhile was not the end of the world. I was the manager of the football team during my junior year at Joel Barlow and that team suffered a tough loss to Newtown (only one that year). On the bus back to Redding, I sat with Coach Engler on an otherwise very quiet bus. He put his arm around my shoulders as I too felt the sting of the tough loss and said "this loss hurt but we will be better for it". Coach Engler taught many things, but most importantly was if you give 110% in whatever you do, good things will happen. I am so thankful that I got to spend time with Coach a few year ago in Rhode Island and tell me what a difference he made in my life and likely many others. He will be missed, but his lessons will live in those who were coached by him for all time.

The Engler Family,
My sincere sympathy on your loss. Gary was a gentleman who devoted his professional life to the young people he taught and coached with compassion and energy. He had a commitment to excellence not matched by many in any profession. He will be missed by many in the Stonington community which he made a better place. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Gary was the most thorough person I've met whether it was coaching, teaching or administrating. As his assistant coach, I never learned more about the importance of detail than I did from him. Always honest, friendly with a great sense of humor, perhaps the thing I remember most is how devoted he was to everything he did.

Linda, Paul and I were so saddened this morning to read of Gary's passing. We both think of him fondly. I remember when he and I worked together on a committee at Pleasant St Baptist Church- he was such a gentleman.
Our sincere condolences to you, and your family

It was with fondness and gratitude that I write this about Coach Engler. I was fortunate to have Coach as both my football and basketball coach in the early 1970s. When playing under Coach Engler, you clearly learned more than the game. You learned about discipline. You learned about following your role on the team. You learned about preparing is more important than the the consequent play. You learned, not to be selfish. You learned what a real leader is to say and be. I have been able to put all those things to good use. My profession is physical education teacher. I've coached several sports after school, much like Coach Engler. I've brought up two wonderful kids to adulthood. I've used many of the things I learned from Coach Engler in my personal and professional life. It is with the most sincere thoughts and blessings that I write about Coach Engler. Rest in Pease Coach. You've completed your journey to the benefit of hundreds of youngsters.
