Having read about the passing of Mrs. Mehl has brought back a flood of good memories for me. I spent a lot of my time with the Mehl family during "my wonder years" and I owe them a lot for helping me transition into adulthood. Mr. and Mrs. Mehl raised a helluva family and I was lucky enough to be included in a lot of their family activities: playing Pitch on Saturday nights, going bowling, watching high school plays, paper drives, playing football in their backyard and 4-square across the street with their neighbors and friends. I always tried to be on my best behavior around Mrs. Mehl as I remember that firm, concerned look that she always wore...almost to the point of worrisome...Mr. Mehl also had the same expression, as if they really were one and the same and made for each other. It´s funny but I often saw that same expression in their children. When they did smile and laugh it made a person feel warm and happy to be with them and that their normal expression was just a veritable face of caring and goodness. What really impressed me the most about Mrs. Mehl was that she was matriarchal or at least a woman with quiet strength or fortitude and it was because of this impression that I had another reason to be on my best behavior around Mrs. Mehl. I also got the feeling that Mrs. Mehl and even her sister were always looking after me for some reason: I´ll never forget the day when Dana handed me a dollar and said "mom said I need to give this back to you." All over a stupid bet I made with Dana, and his mom didn´t want him taking advantage of my stupidity. I think she taught us both a lesson that day. I will also include Mr. Mehl in this light as I remember him sitting on the back step with his pipe in hand and giving thought to the day - he too represented a quiet strength. He also gave me advice on how to beat Dana at games: he said to be patient and let Dana lose the point - in other words patience is a virtue. These memories reflect the impact that Mr. and Mrs. Mehl and their wonderful family had on me and I will always treasure them. Thank you to the Mehls´.
