Jose Antonio Barrera passed away on October 29, 2021 after an eight year battle with Alzheimer's Dementia. He was born on August 12, 1938 to Jose M. and Ofelia Barrera in Laredo, Texas.
Jose grew up in Laredo where he attended Central School located right across from his house. He transferred to St. Joseph Academy in the fourth grade and graduated in 1957. His fondest childhood memories were attending baseball games with his grandfather and fishing and hunting with his dad.
He attended St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas and later returned home to work as a photographer for the Laredo Times. He moved to San Antonio, Texas where he was offered a job at the San Antonio Express-News until he retired in 1993. He received numerous citations for his photography work from several organizations and fellow workers.
Jose was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife of 60 years, Maria del Carmen; sons, Jose Antonio (Blanca), Carlos Eduardo, Mario Alberto (Jodi); grandchildren, Megan, Marissa, Matthew; brother, Eduardo (Carmela); sister-in-law, Yolanda Pearson; brother-in-law, Antonio A. Zardenetta; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family is eternally grateful to Father Pat O'Brien, AA Care Services, Encompasse Hospice, Babette, Ernesto, Dee, Kaitlyn, Carol Ann's Home, and staff, Elizabeth, Weng, Hernan, Betty, Destiny, Celeste, and Jennifer.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church; 3303 Urban Crest Dr.; San Antonio, Texas 78209.
Services will be held on Thursday, November 11, 2021 at St. Pius X Catholic Church; 3303 Urban Crest Dr.; San Antonio, TX with Viewing from 9:30-10:30; Rosary 10:30; Mass 11:00-12:00. A Bereavement Reception: 12:00-1:30 pm. Committal Service at Holy Cross Cemetery 2:00 pm.

We are so sorry to hear of Mr. Barrera´s passing. There are wonderful memories of him which we´ll cherish forever. I´m sure he, mom and dad are playing BUNCO in heaven and smiling down on us. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Barrera family.

I am so deeply sorry for your loss. I was your neighbor for many years growing up.
I still have the black & white photos he took of me for my dance portfolio back in the mid 1970's.
He was a wonderful photographer, father & neighbor.
