Fred Strauss Obituary
October 8, 1948-September 26, 2021
Dr. Fred Strauss passed away at his home in Oakland, CA on September 26, 2021. He was surrounded by his family and close friends. Fred died of carcinoid cancer, which he had for many years.
Fred attended the UC/UCSF Joint Medical Program. He graduated in 1979 and received his medical license in 1981. During this time in medical school, Fred also began volunteering at the Berkeley Free Clinic where he worked for 50 years. Fred was honored for his volunteer work by the mayor of Berkeley.
He started working for the SF Health Department at the Castro Mission Health Center in 1984, where he worked with AIDS and HIV patients. He took care of many, many AIDS and HIV patients, some of whom are still alive today.
Fred retired from the SF Health Department in 2013. He has two children, Tessa (Michaela) and Jesse and one step-daughter Mirae. He also has twin grandsons, Jude and Ever who are 6 years old. He is survived by his wife Mary Dermody, his ex-wife Lili Shidlovski and his brother, Dr. Sandy Strauss in Florida.
Fred loved to sing with his friends in the Anything Goes Chorus, play the piano, hike in the East Bay Regional Parks with his dog Buddy, and he loved to garden at his house in Cazadero. He will be missed by many of his patients, friends, and the numerous people whose lives Fred touched.

Dr. Strauss was the doctor that was present and signed my birth certificate in 1981. I´m glad he left such a grand legacy.

Fred was the kind tall person with the best smile in our neighborhood. He loved to walk Buddy and dearly departed Bill. Fred´s face would light up while singing in concert annually. He loved Mary, his children, and grandchildren. We are missing your warm soul. Hopefully you have met up Bill on the other side, give her a big hug and kiss for me.

Fred. One of a kind, kind to many. I will always remember the sparkle in his eyes and the aura surrounding him while singing and when with Mary.
