Gina Moscone Obituary

Gina Moscone
May 2, 1931 - June 7, 2022
Family, friends and public officials are all grieving and fondly remembering former First Lady of San Francisco Gina Moscone, who died on June 7, 2022, at the age of 91. The cause was cancer.
Known for her elegant style, sharp eye and even sharper sense of humor, Gina also demonstrated extraordinary grace and strength in face of devastating personal and public tragedy.
She was married to Mayor George R. Moscone for 24 years, before he was assassinated in 1978. Gina remained the rock of the Moscone family for the remainder of her life while also playing a significant role in the political and artistic life of San Francisco.
"Our family could not have had a better mom. She devoted her life to our family and was probably the most loyal person this City has ever seen. We are going to miss her terribly and for a very long time," said son Jonathan Moscone.
"My mom and I spoke two-to-three times a week. Mostly about politics and sports. She did not fool around when it came to either," said son Christopher Moscone. "She was tough. To her, politics was personal. You cross her or my dad, or any of us, and that was that - you were done. Finito. Basta. Same with sports. She was from the real old school. And if she was for you, she was for you all the way. There was never a false note in anything she said or did."
"We were blessed to have Gina Moscone in our lives," said Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. "Gina was my friend since I moved to San Francisco. We worked closely together in civic engagement efforts, including our work to showcase San Francisco while hosting the 1984 Democratic National Convention. My husband Paul loved serving with Gina on the War Memorial Board, where she brought her love of the arts and her respect for veterans. Our entire family adored Gina - a dedicated public servant, devoted friend, and most of all, doting mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. With her intelligence, grace, and mischievous sense of humor, Gina lit up every setting she was in – whether a civic gathering, board meeting, Giants ballgame, or San Francisco arts event. We will miss her light and loving spirit."
Born Eugenia Marie Bondanza, Gina Moscone was raised in the Marina neighborhood of San Francisco. She graduated from St. Brigid's High School and on June 24, 1954, married fellow San Franciscan George Moscone, whom she helped put through law school by working various jobs.
Later, Gina worked as a staff member for Assemblyman Wille Brown when he became Speaker of the State Assembly in 1980.
A supporter of many politicians and of the arts throughout her life, Gina was a member of the San Francisco War Memorial Board of Trustees from 1980 to 2022.
Gina Moscone is survived by children Jenifer Moscone (husband Manny Manzanedo); Rebecca Rodolff (husband Craig); Christopher Moscone (wife Linda); and Jonathan Moscone (husband Darryl Carbonaro); as well as grandchildren Zea McNally (husband Oliver); Dillon Moscone; Mia Rodolff; Eden Moscone; and Ruby Moscone; and great granddaughter Larkin McNally.
Gina was preceded in death by her grandson, Owen Moscone, who also died of cancer.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Owen Moscone Foundation, 235 Hillside Ave, Mill Valley, CA 94941.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on July 11, 2022, at Saints Peter & Paul Church in San Francisco.
Interment will be private.

Jon and Chris, my heart felt condolences on the passing of your mom. I only met her once or twice, but just from those brief encounters I gleaned that she was not only a person of high intellect, but also a caring and loving mother. Her legacy and spirit will linger in the hearts and minds of us all. God bless.
