Richard Whelan Obituary

Richard Mitchell "Dick" Whelan
July 10, 1929 - June 19, 2022
Mr. Richard Mitchell "Dick" Whelan passed away on Sunday, June 19, 2022, peacefully, surrounded by his loving family.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 22, from 4:00pm - 8:00pm at Castiglione Funeral Home, located at 544 Old Post Road Number 3, Greenwich, CT. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 23, at 10:00am at Sacred Heart Church, located at 95 Henry Street, Greenwich, CT. Services will be live-streamed https://youtu.be/4JZpe9p2seA
A lifelong Greenwich resident, Dick attended local schools until high school, where he entered Bordentown Military Institute in Bordentown, New Jersey. He graduated in 1950. After his graduation, he began his time at the University of Bridgeport, playing football and earning the moniker, "Bull Dog." During his time studying and playing right tackle, he met the love of his life, Mary Rose Pirrello.
In 1952, Dick enlisted in the Army and served in Korea. While in the military he earned the rank of Corporal, before returning home to marry Mary on February 13, 1954.
Throughout his life, Dick was active in the Greenwich community. He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Byram, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and the Knights of Columbus. Outside of the church, Dick was an active member of the Byram Veterans Association and served on the RTM.
Professionally, he was an accountant for Globe Slicing Machine Company and the IRS, before opening up his own accounting practice.
Dick was a devoted husband to his wife, Mary of 68 years. He loved big band music and nothing made him happier than dancing with her to "In the Mood." Spending time with his children and grandchildren gave him no greater pleasure. Through his sense of humor, warmth, openness, and a love of helping people, Dick made an uplifting impact on everyone he met. He lived by his motto, "Always be a good person."
He is survived by his wife, Mary Rose Whelan; his six children, Peggy of Dunedin, FL, Richard (Susan) of St. Augustine, FL, Patti (Bob) of Cheshire, CT, Robert (Beth) of Wilmington, NY, Joe (Kristin) of Newtown, CT, and Mary (John) of Mission Hills, KS. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Leah (Matt), Paul, Joey, Kris, Jared, Ruby, Ethan, and Mal, and many nieces and nephews who all loved him very much. He was predeceased by his parents Leonard Francis Whelan and Sylvamae Mitchell Whelan.

Dearest Whelan Family,

We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Whelan and offer our deepest and sincerest condolences. Mr. Whelan handled our departed mother and father's (Sal and Josephine Savonas) finances. I still remember them all laughing over coffee in our dining room working, conversating, and having a great time. Mr. Whelan was the sweetest, kindest, and most respectful man my brother and I have ever met. In his distinctive voice, he always asked about our school work, sports, girls, friends...and he did it with a tie and jacket on. Dignified, graceful, a true gentleman. He will be dearly missed and we will raise a glass to Mr. Whelan and a life well lived. "To live in hearts we leave behind is to never die."

With sympathy,
Carey and David Savona

Mary, Peggy and family...I will always remember Dick as a young man on High St. where we all grew up. I remember when he met Mary and got married. What a cute couple they made. He was a great guy and I am sure there will be many fond memories of him to help ease the sadness of his passing. RIP Dick.
