Byron Mills Obituary

Byron Everett, born August 11, 1933, passed into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 17, 2022. Byron was born in Archer, Florida, and raised in Gainesville, Florida. He attended The University of Florida, leaving mid-way to enlist in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After finishing navigator training in Harlingen, Texas, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant and continued there as a navigator instructor. During his post in Harlingen, he met Judy Pulver. Upon completing his active-duty commitment, he and Judy wed on August 23, 1958. He then returned to complete his college education, earning his Bachelor of Science degree from Florida Southern College in 1960, and then joining the Air Force Reserve. Byron was recalled to active duty during the Vietnam War, serving on extended active duty from January 1968 until July 1969. Over the duration of his military career, he became a master navigator and earned numerous military awards and decorations including the Distinguished Service Medal and Legion of Merit, and ultimately achieved the rank of Major General in 1986. He retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1991 after 38½ years of duty to his country. In his civilian capacity Byron was a bank executive. He served as a national bank examiner, as Executive Vice President of Frost Bank in Houston, as President and CEO of InterFirst Bank, San Antonio, and as Executive Vice President of InterFirst Corporation, Dallas. He was committed to numerous community organizations both as a volunteer and in leadership roles. In retirement, Byron and Judy enjoyed traveling the world together. Byron is survived by his daughter, Melanie; son, Scott; Scott's four children, Merritt, Sawyer, Hutton, and Lawson, all of Dallas, Texas; sister, Noel McGriff of Gainesville, Florida; and sixteen nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Judy; his parents, Juanita and Byron Mills; sister, Carolyn Rion; and brother, Clayton. Chaplain Gil Richardson will conduct the service. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that contributions be sent to AFVCF - Freedom House Research Fund, 5100 John D Ryan Blvd, San Antonio, Texas 78245.

I would like to extend my most sincere condolences and sympathy to the family of Byron Mills. I first met Byron as a young attorney at First International Bancshares in Dallas when he was hired to lead its bank in San Antonio. Byron was incredibly intelligent with a vast array of experience and talent, but what I remember most of him was his quiet, sincere, and genuine manner of interacting with all people. Byron was a true gentleman who will be greatly misssed.
