I just saw Weldon's obituary by chance last week. We were friends a long time ago when we both worked at the Water Development Board in Austin, Texas. I am so sorry that I didn't see the obituary in time to attend the service. Please know that I am thinking of his family and offering up my prayers. Mary Collins Goodner, Dallas, Texas

Both Joan and I offer our sincerest condolences to Linda as well as the whole Hammond family. I first meet Weldon in 1982 while interviewing for the position of Director of the Division of Earth and Physical Sciences at UTSA. Weldon was a dedicated faculty member and scientist during his tenure at UTSA and always looked out for his students. He was always willing to help in matters of divisional curriculum and advanced degrees for our students. But, most of all I will miss his ability to tell any number of jokes. I still don't know how he could remember so many jokes over the years, but he did. He was a excelliant colleague and good friend during my tenure at UTSA. We will all miss him.

I send sincere sympathy to Weldon´s extensive family. He had an unforgettable personality - endlessly entertaining stories and a quick wit that easily got people laughing. I knew Weldon in the 1990s when I was an adjunct Lecturer in the Division of Geology and Environmental Sciences at UTSA. At the time, he was the Department Chair, where he was both a respected leader and hydrologist, along with being a very interesting and most likeable person. He always had a sparkle in his eyes with a great sense of humor. We reconnected early in 2020 when, strangely enough, we were both being treated at the same orthopedic rehab clinic! It was with much sadness that I heard of his loss - a colleague always to be remembered as someone who had a great impact on others both professionally and personally.

Dr. Hammond was an important piece of my education during studies for my Master's program at UTSA. He was tough but fair in the classroom and on my thesis committee. He was a no-compromise educator which helped make me a better geologist. I was blessed to continue our relationship as friends throughout these last several years, especially at South Texas Geological functions.

I offer my deepest condolences to the Hammond family. I always considered Weldon to be a colleague, friend, and mentor during my time at UTSA. Weldon was, without a doubt, the epitome of what a colleague and educator should be, a true role model. I always found our discussions, whether work related or not, to be fruitful, thoughtful, and rewarding. He was dedicated to his students and profession and I am a better person for having known him. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family. I know he is missed.

I am very sad to hear of Weldon's death. He was a colleague and a friend at UTSA. He was welcoming and ever helpful to me as a new faculty member - a long time ago now. He was mindful of and responsive to the educational needs of our students. I am not sure how he did it, but he was able to navigate the perilous waters of university politics to achieve important goals for our department, and without making enemies - a skill he must have learned while in the Navy! He was rarely without a kind word and a smile for everyone. I extend my deepest sympathy to his family and friends, he will be sorely missed.

Weldon has been a very good friend, co-worker, and mentor of mine since 2004 when we were both faculty members in the Department of Geological Sciences at UTSA. He was humor and very enjoyable to work with, and always there when I needed help or advises; he supported young faculty (like me, many years ago!) to advance our career via providing financial supports of our students through the Center of Water Research funds. I deeply miss you Weldon; peace and rest with God!

We hadn't met officially. I only knew him from records. I knew he was an exceptional man and from his obituary seems I never knew even half of it. He took with him history of the Alamo SCV camp that our new guys will never know. Such a tragic loss. We will never forget Adjutant Hammond.

Weldon was a wonderful friend from the 4th grade until the last day. We shared many adventures together, often including our friend Neill Walsdorf. Weldon was a Life Member of the Texas Transportation Museum, served on its Board, and in recent years supported TTM's efforts to tell the history of Texas Railroads. In high school he was an excellent trombonist, and was a member of the Gear Grinders, complete with an Oldsmobile engine in a 1940 Ford convertible. Life for Weldon was a never ending adventure! Helen and I will miss our frequent evenings together with Linda and Weldon. Godspeed, Old Friend.
