Cornelius Maloney Obituary

Cornelius Maloney
January 25, 1926 - September 2, 2022
Cornelius Francis Maloney passed away peacefully in San Francisco on September 2, 2022. Born January 25, 1926 in Menlo Park to Cornelius T. and Frances Maloney. Survived by his daughters Patricia (Richard), Kathleen, Nancy (William), and Gerilyn (Matthew). Predeceased by his wife of 62 years Marilyn (Pozzi) and son James (Vanessa). Also survived by grandchildren Stephen (Clare), Christopher (Courtney), Katelyn, Kevin, Mary (Philip), Kelly, Sydney, Scarlett and great grandsons Henry and William.
Con attended St. Joseph's Grammar School in Menlo Park and Sequoia High School in Redwood City graduating in December 1943 to enlist in the Navy. Con continued to serve in the Naval Reserve retiring as a Chief Petty Officer.
Con graduated from San Jose State College in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts. He earned his Master's in Education from USF in 1961. Con was a lifelong educator in San Francisco starting as a middle school teacher and culminating as an Academic Counselor at City of College of San Francisco. He had a passion for woodworking and hosted a live television show in the 1960's called The Home Handyman on KQED.
Con played water polo and baseball at San Jose State and pitched on the Jefferson's semi-professional team. He was a life time member of the South End Rowing Club, The San Mateo Elks Lodge and The Old Timers Baseball Association of San Francisco. Con officiated high school football, baseball and softball games. His powder blue VW bug was his trademark that could be spotted around San Francisco sports fields. A highlight of his officiating career was being chosen to be the iconic baseball umpire in the CA State Lottery ad campaign.
Con loved his family dearly and would do anything he could for us. Our memories include him teaching us to swim in the pool at Treasure Island, running The Bay To Breakers and trips to the Russian River. A true animal lover, he adopted three Vizsla dogs.
Above all, his abiding Catholic faith was his guiding force. A long time parishioner of St. Stephen Parish, he provided support to the school and served as an Usher. In his retirement Con worked part-time at Duggan's Serra Mortuary where he was able to help people in their time of need, which gave him great solace.
Con was a humble man who accepted all that came along with grace and dignity. With great determination and strength, he was independent through his 95th year.
He willingly accepted help from several wonderful caregivers and we are thankful they held him in such regard. Con was grateful for family, friends, and neighbors who would stop by his house to visit. Special thanks to Peggy Teshara, Sister Joan Derry, SHF, and cousin Jack Fisher for their unwavering support.
Rosary will be held on Thursday, September 29th at 6pm St. Stephen Church, 601 Eucalyptus Drive, San Francisco. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 30th at 1pm at Church of the Nativity, 210 Oak Grove Ave, Menlo Park. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Menlo Park next to his cherished wife and son. Any remembrances can be made to Corpus Christi Monastery, 215 Oak Grove Avenue, Menlo Park, CA.

Mr Maloney was my counselor at CCSF from 1972-1976.I graduated with his daughter Patty Maloney Blake from Mercy SF 1972. He took wonderful care of all his counseling students I know, especially those who were coming from parochial high schools. I graduated January 1976 and received my ADN from CCSF. Thank you Mr Maloney.

I was in Mr Maloney´s home room at Giannini in 1962-63. It was always fun to start the day with him. I just had the idea to search for him today. I´m sorry he is gone but I´m so glad he had a long life and enjoyed seeing his family grow. He was a great human being. Mary Anne Huff Shaw

Con and I were close at the South End Rowing Club. He was the recording secretary at the club for many years and a stalwart SERC member.

Mr. Maloney was well known to our family. My father had worked with him many times though the years & he was friends with my grandparents though church activities. He served as the driver of the limo when a family member passed away & he was working at Duggans. RIP kind sir & sincere condolences to the family.

Mr. Maloney taught my sister at Presidio Junior High and my brother and I at A.P. Giannini Jr. High. He was the favorite teacher of all three of us. In later years he refereed football games that I coached at Sacred Heart High School and I always loved seeing him. Many years later I bumped into him at a graduation at Tomales High school. He came right up to me and said hello. I will never forget him and remember as an outstanding educator, football official, and most of all as as outstanding person. He obviously had a great life. My best to the family of a great man.
