BALLSTON SPA - Daniel Eugene Gregory passed away on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, one day after his 91st birthday. Daniel, respectfully known as The Chief by friends and family for most of his adult life, will now be reuniting with Geraldine, his beloved wife of 64 years, in heaven.
Daniel was born in Albany to Eugene and Alice (Fitzmaurice) Gregory. The Chief was one of ten children, five boys and five girls. He was predeceased by his parents and all nine of his siblings, Katie (Dick) Leornardi, Patsy (Tom) Kane, Joanie (Lefty) Brunet, Susie (Sammy) Gioeni, Nancy Gregory, Jimmy Gregory, Jackie Gregory, Tommy (Pat) Gregory, and David (Carol) Gregory; as well as his son-in-law, John Richardson, who loved The Chief like he was his own father.
Daniel is survived by his four adoring children, Dan (Kathy) Gregory, Jimmy (Dianna) Gregory, Donna Richardson and JoAnne (John) Ryan. He was the proud grandfather of Meghan Gregory and Danny (Alyssa) Gregory, and is also survived by his great-granddaughter, Gracie Gregory; along with several cousins and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Daniel began his employment career at a very young age as a roofer and eventually became a sheet metal worker. He was a member of Sheet Metal Workers Union #83 for over 50 years. The Chief loved taking family vacations with Gerry and their kids to Atlantic City, both during pre-gambling years, and especially after casinos became all the rage there. It is worth noting that many of the Gregory kids' friends fell in love with going on trips to A.C. with The Chief and Gerry. They all also loved hanging out with them at their home in Ballston Spa, where the annual Gregory Christmas morning champagne brunch became a must-attend for all who were lucky enough to be invited.
The Chief will always be remembered for his quiet strength and quick wit, as well as his famous spicy pasta sauce. He had a way of putting a smile on everyone's face and was always there to support his children through thick and thin. Family always meant everything to him, as did rooting for the New York Yankees and the many trips to The Bronx for games with his kids and their friends. In later years, Dan and Gerry spent several winters in Sarasota, Fla. The Chief was an absolute treasure of a man who will be greatly missed.
A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 4, at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave. (Rte 9 and/or Marion Ave.), Saratoga Springs, with Father Martin Fisher officiating. Family and friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
