Marion Gilbert Obituary

Marion Gilbert
April 3, 1933 - March 6, 2023
Marion (Marty) Moore Gilbert passed away peacefully on Monday March 6, 2023 in her home in Darien, CT. Marty is remembered for her boundless joy, expansive spirit and unconditional love for all she encountered.
Born on April 3, 1933 in San Mateo, California, Marty's parents were Jane Foster Moore and Edward Small Moore Jr. Marty graduated from Smith College in 1955 where she was later honored as a remarkable alumnae in 1999. She earned a master's in library science from Pratt Institute and served as an elementary school librarian at Tokeneke and Royle elementary schools in Darien for nearly two decades until 1989.
She and her late husband of 64 years, Roger Gilbert Jr., shared a love for adventure, family and connecting with others through couples and family counseling. After seven years of serving as a presenting team couple for Marriage Encounter, Roger and Marty co-founded and led The Engaged Workshop starting in 1983, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing enrichment workshops for engaged and married couples, and volunteered with the Network program at Episcopal Social Services in New York City, serving people coming home from prison. It was in part for this work that Marty Gilbert was given an honorary doctorate from Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University.
Marty also served as president of a family foundation, where she directed philanthropic support to many organizations in Connecticut and New York, focused on empowering youth, families and communities.
Marty, along with her husband Roger, enjoyed being an active member of St. Luke's Parish in Darien. Marion (Marty) Gilbert is survived by her four children: Jeffrey Z. Gilbert (Heather Bradford), Louisa Gilbert (Anil Singh), Jane Gilbert (Douglas Heller) and Katrina Gilbert Millard (Peter); and nine grandchildren: Aidan, Greta and Tucker Gilbert, Ana and Tanya Singh (Jeffrey Wilke), Lauren and Myles Heller, and Hazel and Pedro Millard.
Donations may be made in her memory to Person to Person https://give.p2phelps.org , Network Support Services https://www.networkssi.org/ , Bridgeport Education Fund http://bpef.org , or a cause or organization of your choosing.

My deepest and sincerest sympathies The Gilbert Family. You all have been a wonderful blessing to our family. I will always hold a place in my heart for Mrs. Gilbert. As a little girl she played a major role in me being able to express myself creatively with all the colored pencils, crayons, and paper. She was and will always have a place in my heart that I appreciate. Jeff, Katrina, Louisa, and Janie... You have had the beauty of 2 beautiful human beings as parents. Thank you for sharing them. We all are better because of their presence. Big Hugs and Much Love to you all.
