Charles Marshall Scanland II, or Chuck as he was known to family and friends, passed away peacefully after a battle with cancer on Friday, March 10 at the age of 65. He was born in Socorro, New Mexico on March 13, 1957 to Marshall Vaughn and Louise Waller Scanland. As a young child, he lived in Venezuela while his father worked in the oil industry. From Venezuela, the family moved to the Houston area where he spent most of his growing years, graduating from Spring High School in 1975. After spending 3 semesters at Texas A&M in College Station, he joined the US Navy where he served as an electrician's mate for 6 years. He returned to College Station to finish his BS in Engineering Technology in 1985. Upon graduation, he was hired for a prestigious training program by Digital Equipment Corporation in Massachusetts. He and his young family returned to Houston after 6 years when he accepted a job at Compaq Computer Corporation. He continued to work as a network analyst and consultant for Baker Hughes, Reliant Energy and Shell until his retirement in 2021.
Chuck had many hobbies, but two of his greatest passions were for music and woodworking. He was a devoted guitar player and often told stories of evenings on the porch outside his college apartment on Boyett Street in College Station listening to (and occasionally playing with) a very young Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen. Though Chuck never took the plunge as a professional musician, he continued to play guitar his entire life. He was a key member of the praise and worship band at Celebration Lutheran Church in Cypress for over 13 years. Woodworking was his other passion, where he initially honed his skills by crafting intricate but functional boxes. Eventually he would combine his passions for music and woodworking as well as his knowledge of electrical engineering into the crafting of custom electric guitars.
Chuck had a wicked sense of humor which he maintained right until the very end. He always loved a good joke as well as good comedy. He was an avid reader and cinephile with an interest in a broad range of subjects from history and current events to science fiction. Finally, while Chuck was never vocal or outspoken in his religion, he was a man of deep conviction and quiet faith.
He is survived by his former wife, Cynthia Scanland; their older son, Matthew, daughter-in-law Anh, granddaughters Emily and Chloe; younger son Eric, grandsons Bricen and Kayson; sister Cynthia Vimont and her husband Burton as well as many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father Marshall Vaughn Scanland, stepmother Nance Rae Purvis Scanland, mother Mary Louise Waller McPeters, and stepfather James McPeters.
