Donald Pickthorn Obituary

Pickthorn, Donald Earl

Donald Earl Pickthorn of Kettering, OH. Born March 26, 1949. Died December 20, 2023. Survived by his children Christopher Pickthorn (Nikki) of Tipp City, Stacey Pickthorn of West Carrollton, and Tamra Pickthorn (Gary Winfrey) of West Bloomfield, MI, grandchildren Garrett Winfrey and Elizabeth Matheson, brother David (Betty), and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ellen Leslie (Pfeiffer) Pickthorn, mother Jeannette Richards Pickthorn and father Jack Pickthorn.

Don and Ellen lived and worked in both Ohio and Kentucky during their nearly 50-year marriage. Don had a 30-year career with Hobart Corporation, but the job he was most proud of was being the daily caregiver to Ellen during her 14-year battle with Alzheimer's.

After Don developed AML, he was supported by amazing teams of doctors at both Kettering Hospital and OSUCCC, the companionship of Linda Milam, and the support of many beloved friends. Don was a Christian, and his loved ones take comfort in his passing, knowing that he is finally home with the Lord and reunited with his beloved Ellen. He made a decision to donate his remains to medical study. If you are inclined to honor his memory, please do so with a donation to The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society or Ohio's Hospice of Dayton.

Don Pickthorn was our neighbor. Donald was a very peaceful and God-fearing man. He also was a kind and wonderful neighbor. He was the kind of neighbor everyone wished they had. He talked about loving the Lord and now he is with him in heaven. It was nice knowing you Don....God speed.

Don worked with my father at Hobart and when he started at Allied, he drew the connection. He & I hit it off immediately. Don was an outstanding employee and when I asked him to train others with similar responsibilities as his, he embraced that request and worked with everyone at Allied that did a similar job. Don was the benchmark in making custom cut air filters and the quality of his work was noticed and commented on many times by customers. Don was so committed to his wife's care and earned great respect for that from his coworkers at Allied. My thoughts are with the family, know that your father, brother, grandfather, family member was well thought of and respected by us here at Allied Supply.

I met Don when I was working at Cox Arboretum where he frequently visited to walk the paths and enjoy our natural world. He liked to share his stories, photos, and smile. He was genuine, honest, kind and I am thankful to have known him even if only for a short time. Peace to his family and friends.
