Sondra Goldstein Obituary

Sondra "Sandy" Lerner Goldstein passed away peacefully Friday, January 5, 2024, surrounded by her family.

Sandy was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 27, 1932, to Herman Stern and Bertha Cohen Lerner. She moved to Memphis when she was in 4th grade. On June 25, 1950 – one week after her high school graduation – Sandy married Jerome Joseph Goldstein. Jerome was the older brother of her best friend, Donna Goldstein Goodman.

Sandy and Jerome lived a full and happy life, rejoicing in the births of five children.

Mike (Sharon), Jeff (Bunny), Leigh, Sue, and Karen (Jody).

With the birth of her first grandson, John, Sandy became a grandmother at the young age of 44. She went on to become "Granny" to many, many more grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as their friends.

In the decades that followed, Granny's house on Shady Grove Road became the regular gathering place for her ever-growing tribe. From Friday night dinners to weekends by the pool, every significant life event brought family and friends to her home to celebrate the occasion and one another.

Sandy was active in supporting the Arts in Memphis, as well as the greater Jewish Community. She delivered Meals on Wheels for MIFA and volunteered for several community organizations.

She is survived by her children, 19 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

Whether you knew her as Sondra, or Sandy, or Mom, or Granny, she will live on in our hearts and memories as our beloved inspiration.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Memphis Jewish Community Center, Temple Israel, Playhouse on the Square, or GPAC.

I just found out about Sandy passing. I know how much my Larry loved your mother. He talked of her often to me. He would visit with her often. I´m so sorry for your loss of your mom. Larry absolutely thought she hung the moon. My symphony to all of you.

So sorry to learn of cousin Sondra's passing. She was one of those people you wish you could have spent more time with and more importantly, known better. Her Joie de vie was contagious and I have very pleasant memories of the times we did spend together. She was a special person who I know will be missed.

Mike, Jeff, Leigh, Sue, and Karen:
I am so sorry for your loss. I have the fondest memories of Sondra. She was like no one else in our extended family. Her energy, her sense of fun, her joy of life was so special. She was always just so full of life, interested in everything and everyone. Her energy was infectious. She was fun to be around. It was always so much fun to see her and you all on your trips to Chicago when you all were kids. I'm glad I got a chance to have lunch with her in 2016 when I was passing through Memphis. I will miss her.
