Peter T. "Pete" Seely, of Whiteville, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2024. He was 84 years old.
Pete was born in Chicago in 1940 to Lyman Tremaine and Harriet Bell Seely. He grew up in West Chester County, New York and attended Pleasantville High School then St. Lawrence University. Pete played baseball and football and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.
Pete spent a lifetime in the field of education, beginning at Westminster School in Simsbury, Connecticut and then went on to the admissions offices at Yale University and University of Pennsylvania. But he spent the bulk of his career teaching high school math and doing college advising, including spending time overseas at the American Schools in London and Caracas, Venezuela and in Porto Allegre, Brazil. Before retiring, Pete spent over 20 years in Louisville, Kentucky where he was the Director of Development at Louisville Collegiate School and was very active in supporting and developing Summit Academy.
Pete was a consummate host and loved to entertain. For a short time after leaving Louisville Collegiate, he owned Good Times Pub in Louisville. He loved to tell stories and make people laugh and he was always willing to sit and have a drink. He loved fishing and being on the water. He spent his childhood on the St. Lawrence River in Ogdensburg, New York and later lived in Maine and spent his summers when he wasn't teaching on his lobster boat in Small Point and taking rides up to Boothbay Harbor.
Pete leaves behind his wife of five years, Margaret, of Whiteville, TN; five children, Julie Seely (Chris Methven), Abigail Seely (Steve Butler), Séamus Seely (Meaghan Seely) Peter Seely (Jayme) and Elizabeth Seely; as well as seven grandchildren, with an eighth on the way, and one great grandchild. He is survived by his sisters, Polly Rosen and Linda Guildali and his brother, Dr. Richard L. Seely.
Peter's family are eternally grateful for the love and support Margaret's daughters, Teresa and Tamatha, provided to Peter and Margaret in his final months.
