Josephine Hawes Obituary

Josephine "Jo" Hawes, 78, of Millington, Tennessee formerly of Mexia, Texas. Went to be with the Lord on March 10, 2024 surrounded by her family. She was born on September 11, 1945 in Meridian, Mississippi to the late Eugene and Vennie Collins.

When she was 8 years old her mother passed away and was raised by Aunt Lou and Aunt Nolie, since her father traveled with work. They were sisters of her mother. She attended Magnolia Grammar School in Magnolia, Arkansas. In her teenage years she moved to Memphis, Tennessee with her father, where she attended Memphis Technical High School. At the age of 17, she married and had 3 children; Robert, Theresa, and T.J.

She was a stay-at-home mom until she later got her first job in a paper mill.

When Jo and her first husband divorced, she moved back to Texas where she went to work at Mexia State School, where she provided direct patient care to Intellectually disabled individuals.

Later in life she moved back to Memphis to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She remarried and is survived by her husband of 29 years; Anthony Hawes.

Mom was a wonderful grandma and loved all her grandchildren, for which her life revolved around. She took them camping at the cabin and went hunting and fishing with them. She also loved to play cards and board games with her grandchildren.

Jo was a very independent woman and spoke her mind many times throughout her life. She was very Sassy!!

She was preceded in Death by her parents; Eugene and Vennie Collins and a brother; Devon Collins.

Mrs. Hawes is survived by her husband; Anthony Hawes, 2 Daughters; Theresa Jarvis (Pat), and T.J. Sawicki (Tony), 1 son; Robert Brown (Lois), 2 brother; Winford Collins (Cece), Sister-in-Law Glenda Collins, 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, 5 nieces, 5 nephews, 1 great niece, 2 great nephews, 1 great-great niece and 1 great-great nephew.

Family and friends will gather from 1 PM until 2 PM on Friday, March 22, 2024 at Northridge Woodhaven Funeral Home and Cemetery, 6755 HWY 51 N Millington, Tennessee 38053. A Memorial Service will follow at 2:00 PM.
