Jean Pelkey Obituary
Northampton, MA - Jean Hartwell Pelkey passed away peacefully on April 10, 2025, surrounded by her family. Born on April 25, 1936, to Teresa and Everett Hartwell, Jean led a life of kindness, quiet strength, and deep compassion.
On May 18, 1957, she married the love of her life, Donald J. Pelkey. Together, they shared 67 years of marriage, raised five children, and built a life rooted in love and resilience. She was predeceased by their oldest daughter, Donna Jean Fleury, who passed away in March 2024 from ALS. Jean's legacy continues through her surviving children: Susan Patterson, Lynn Pelkey, Mark Pelkey, and Beth Melnik.
Jean was lovingly referred to as "Meme" by her eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, who brought her immense joy.
She found great peace in nature-walking through the woods, tending to her vibrant wildflower gardens, and collecting seashells along the coast of Maine with her children and grandchildren. Jean cherished solitude, yet she was always present for those in need. She was an avid knitter whose lovingly crafted sweaters will be treasured.
Later in life, Jean returned to college and earned a degree in social work. She devoted her time to supporting women and assisting people experiencing homelessness in finding stability and shelter. She made a lasting impact on many lives.
She will be remembered for her gentle nature, bright wit, and subtle humor, which she generously shared with those fortunate to know her well. Jean was predeceased by her younger brother, Paul, whom she deeply cared for and who passed away one month before her on March 9, 2025.
Her steadfast, compassionate, and graceful spirit lives on in her family. Her husband, Donald, feels profoundly blessed to have shared a life with her. Jean's memory will always be cherished.

I remember Jean well. As a cold, wet, and frozen paperboy in the middle of early 1960's winter storms, she would invite me in to her kitchen to defrost and catch my breath. I cannot tell you how much her generosity and kindness meant. Over the years, I have always remembered Jean and Don fondly whenever I drove down State Street. They were a gift to the world.
