Margaret Elizabeth Smith Trumbull
Enfield, NH - Margaret Elizabeth Smith Trumbull, 81, of
Enfield, New Hampshire, entered into eternal peace on May 1, 2025, holding her husband's hand, having received loving goodbyes from her family. She passed after a brief struggle with a bacterial blood infection. Her life was a tapestry of grace, creativity, resilience, energy, humor, deep faith, and devotion to those she loved.
Margaret was born at home on June 18, 1943, in New Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, to Dillon and Grace (Morgan) Smith. She was the youngest of three children. At age 12, Margaret's family left the small country village and moved to the city of Aberdeen, where she attended Albyn School for Girls. Following graduation, Margaret attended the Katharine Gibbs School in London, studying French, German, and Office Administration.
She was known for her curious mind, independent spirit and adventurous heart, which led her to embrace life at full speed, especially as a young woman. At age 19 she was an au pair for a year in Germany, then returned to Edinburgh, Scotland, to use her language skills working for an import/export company. For her 21st birthday, Margaret's parents gave her a trip to the United States-a journey that would change everything! Margaret embraced life in New England, learning to sail, waterski and downhill ski. She took on a variety of jobs, including working in libraries at Harvard and Dartmouth, and spending a winter in North Conway, waitressing by night to support her love of downhill skiing by day.
In 1966, Margaret married Roger S. Wood and settled in
Lebanon, NH. They had two sons, Scot and Roderick. After divorce, Margaret moved to Campton, NH where she enjoyed hiking in the White Mountain range and downhill skiing with friends and family. In 1974, Margaret became a naturalized citizen of the United States.
A year later, Margaret married Clyde Harrison Trumbull, and together they raised a blended family with deep love and mutual respect. Her children (now including Matthew, Julia and stepdaughter Tracy) were the focus and pride of her life. She was the devoted grandmother of 11 grandchildren and recently celebrated the arrival of her first great-grandchild.
In 1982, Margaret experienced a transformative spiritual awakening and gave her life to Jesus Christ. Her faith became the anchor of her heart and shaped her life. Her church family at Vero Christian Church (in Florida) provided her with a solid biblical foundation for her faith. She led women's Bible studies, offered spiritual counsel, and lived generously-supporting missionaries and community organizations with quiet, consistent giving. Her interest in missions led to two trips to Kenya to encourage church workers and medical personnel working with the Maasai people in the Rift Valley, a trip to Russia and service as a board member of an international missions organization.
After twelve years in Florida, the Trumbulls returned to the Upper Valley, living in Warner, Lebanon and finally settling in Enfield on Mascoma Lake in 2007.
No matter where she lived, Margaret created a home that was beautiful, orderly, and filled with warmth. A talented and creative cook, Margaret was known for her delicious home-cooked meals and her elegant yet practical hospitality. Indeed, Margaret was blessed with a special gift for hospitality, welcoming many folks into her home over the years, providing a peaceful sanctuary for every guest.
Margaret was an active member of Union Church of Enfield Center, an eager volunteer wherever help was needed. She treasured the close relationships she enjoyed with the women in the Ladies of Grace Bible study.
Margaret will be remembered not only for her grace and intelligence, but for the faith, warmth, humor and generosity that flowed through every chapter of her life. Though her absence leaves a great void, her legacy lives on in her family, in the lives she touched, and in the hope of eternal life she so deeply believed in.
Margaret is survived by her husband of fifty years, Clyde Harrison Trumbull; her children Roderick Wood and his wife CharLea, Tracy (Trumbull) Mossell and her husband Henry, Matthew Trumbull and his wife Kirsten, and Julia (Trumbull) Michael and her husband Todd, along with 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She now rejoices in heaven with her son, the late R. Scot Wood.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at The Jack Byrne Center for Palliative and Hospice Care for their compassionate care of Margaret in her final days, and to the donors who made this wonderful facility a reality. Thanks also to Palliative Care Specialist Dr. Charles Whang, MD at DHMC for his guidance during a difficult time.
Her Celebration of Life will be held on May 24 at 2:00 p.m. at Union Church of Enfield Center. Burial will take place on May 23 at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery, with visiting hours from 4:00–6:00 p.m. at Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon. Please send flowers to Ricker Funeral Home, 56 School St.,
