Born on May 23, 1948, Jack dedicated his life to his family, serving as a steadfast husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a loyal and funny friend who was always ready to lend a hand. Jack has been described as the person who "you'll meet once and you'll never forget". This has been apparent through not only the friendships he's formed but also through the many interactions with coworkers and neighbors along the way.
Jack's early education was completed at Central High School, followed by further studies at Memphis State University. His commitment to service was exemplified by his role as a C-130 pilot at the rank of Captain in the United States Air Force, where he served diligently for four years. Following his military service, Jack embarked on a successful career, first as an air traffic controller and later as a chemist at Schering Plough where he applied his brilliance and leadership skills. He was Known for his storytelling, he never missed a beat to talk about his time in the Air Force, memories through the years, or bragging about his family. Some stories were repeated often, if you know you know. Jack will also be remembered as an avid Memphis Tigers fan, a passion he shared and instilled in his family and friends. He really was a "Jack" of all trades. Some hobbies he enjoyed the most were long days on the golf course with his buddies and family members as well as playing bridge with lifelong friends and Hand & Foot- a family card game that has been and will be passed down from generation to generation. He loved showcasing his culinary skills through cooking and grilling for 1, or for all at the "Big House" in Pickwick.
Jack leaves behind his loving wife, Bea Nelson whom he loved dearly until his last seconds, his children, Lynne (Robby) Kendrick, JoAnne (Cory) Pratt, and Jon Oliver (Tracy) Nelson. He was a proud grandfather to Ashley (Dillon) Lascellas, Courtney (Eric) Areizaga, Cole Pratt, Cody Pratt, Jesse Oliver (Alexis) Nelson, Vince Sherrod, and Summer (Jo) Hayes, and a great-grandfather to Grayson and Addilynne Lascellas, Amara and Davina Nelson, and Miles Areizaga. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Oliver Nelson and Barbara Springer Nelson, and his sister, Lynn Nelson James.
