Neil Harvey Givens, 86, of Memphis, Tennessee, was called home to be with the Lord on June 30, 2025. The first of two children, Neil was born on July 21, 1938, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Sue Manker Givens, his mother Clara Griffin Givens, and his father, Thurman J. Givens.
Neil is survived by his beloved daughter, Gwen Givens Byrd (Danny) of Germantown, Tennessee. He leaves behind two cherished grandchildren, Brandon Andrew Byrd (Gray) of Memphis and Jonathan Alexander Byrd (Emily) of Collierville, Tennessee, as well as four great-grandchildren: Ward, Lylla, and Drew Byrd, and Reed Byrd. He is also survived by his brother, Dennis Ray Givens of Memphis, Tennessee.
A devoted husband, father, and great-grandfather, Neil was lovingly known as "Meal" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be remembered fondly for his humble wisdom and unwavering love for and dedication to his family.
Neil found great joy in family traditions, always looking forward to birthday gatherings and holiday meals. For many years, it was his honored role to say the blessing at these occasions, a responsibility he carried out with quiet reverence and heartfelt sincerity.
He had a longstanding love of hamburgers, a love that began during his early years as a Commercial Appeal paperboy. Because he was rising so early, Neil befriended the early morning crew at the Highland Heights Krystal on Summer Avenue. Before they switched to the breakfast menu, they would offer him all the leftover burgers from the griddle. Maybe that's why, well into his later years, one good hamburger a week was just right for him. A weekend hamburger remained his simple pleasure. Neil often described himself as a "simple, not complicated guy," and those who knew him best would agree.
A faithful member of Christ Church for more than 20 years, Neil found great purpose in his walk with the Lord. He delighted in serving his family and sharing God's love through word and deed, leaving behind a legacy of quiet yet steadfast faith.
