Stewart George Obituary

Stewart M. George

White River Jct., VT - Stewart M. George, 80, died October 31, 2025, at the Jack Byrne Center in Lebanon, NH. Stewart was born April 26, 1945, in Hanover, NH, the son of Gordon George and Evelyn (Hatch); he lived on the family farm in Ely for many years and graduated from Thetford Academy in 1963, where he played baseball and basketball.

Following high school, Stewart worked for a time in a sawmill and later Cody Electric; he then began his career as an electrician and general maintenance man at Dartmouth College and Dartmouth Medical School where he was a proud member of Service Employees International Union #560 and shop steward at The Medical School. At the time of his retirement, Stewart was honored with a certificate of 25 years of service by Dartmouth President Wright.

Stewart married Janice Godfrey in 1966; they raised three children together at their home in White River Junction. In 1997, Stewart was married to Nettie Metcalf. They lived in Norwich, VT and later retired to Keystone Heights, Florida. Since 2021, he had resided at Valley Terrace in White River Junction where he enjoyed the staff, the residents and the card games.

Aside from Stewart's love of ice cream, a good hamburger, maple syrup, black velvet, and horse pulls at the fair, Stewart found joy in poker nights, bingo games, and cheering-sometimes loudly-for the Red Sox (especially when they managed to win). He loved reminiscing about his years as a Little League coach in Hartford and could, at a moment's notice, deliver a play-by-play of those legendary mid-'80s championship games-complete with the players' names, batting orders, and the kind of commentary that would make NESN proud. For many years, he also served as a behind-the-plate umpire, continuing his service to the sport and the Upper Valley. (He later took his umpiring talents to his recliner, where he called balls and strikes for the Red Sox and MLB with great conviction.)

His greatest joy came from spending time with his children and grandchildren and listening to their stories. After his retirement, he was often the helper at Teresa's daycare where he loved being as silly as the toddlers he was spending time with. During the summer, his grandchildren couldn't wait to spend time at "Pada Camp" where they traveled from playground to playground, often ending up at Fore-U for ice cream.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Evelyn and Gordon, and a brother, Everett George. He is survived by his wife, Nettie of Chelsea, VT, a son, Bill George (Carrie) of Kremmling, CO and two daughters, Teresa Whitney of Lyme; Barbara Farnsworth (Scott) of White River Junction; eight grandchildren: Ryan, Sadie, Olivia, Carter, Emma, Gavin, Elizabeth and Ashley; two great-grandchildren: Layne and Blake, a brother, Robert A. George of Newport, VT, and several generations of the Metcalf family who embraced his humor, his friendship and his care of their matriarch, Nettie.

A celebration of life will be scheduled in the spring. Meanwhile, the family will celebrate Stewart at a Red Sox outing next summer (so long as the Yankees aren't around). Lastly, with a nod to Stewart's love of country music, and as he often repeated several times a day: "Alexa! Turn on George Jones': Who's Gonna Fill Their (his) Shoes"

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate teams at Valley Terrace, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital, and the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative & Hospice Care for the exceptional care and kindness they provided to Stewart and his family members.

In lieu of flowers, Stewart would suggest a donation to the Boston Red Sox to help strengthen their pitching rotation. Alternatively, donations can be made in Stewart's honor to the Thetford Academy Alumni Association.
