Thomas Curran Obituary

Thomas Curran

New London, NH - Thomas Gregory Curran, age 96, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on December 19, 2025 in Newport, New Hampshire.

Thomas was born on March 3, 1929, in Northampton, Massachusetts, to Mary G. (Murphy) Curran and John T. Curran. The youngest of three children, he graduated from Northampton High School. Following graduation, Tom enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving honorably from 1950 to 1954. He was stationed at Great Falls Air Force Base in Montana and later at Tachikawa Air Force Base in Tokyo, Japan, where he worked as a parachute specialist during the Korean War.

After his military service, Tom attended the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he studied golf course and turf management, graduating in 1957. During his time at UMass, he met and fell in love with fellow student Nancy A. Coyle of Braintree, Massachusetts. The two were married on December 27, 1957, beginning a devoted partnership that would span 64 years.

Following their marriage, Tom and Nancy moved to Saginaw, Michigan, where Tom began his career as a golf course superintendent at Saginaw Country Club. In 1960, they returned to Massachusetts, first settling in Fitchburg and later in Walpole. Tom served as Golf Course Superintendent at Oak Hill Country Club in Fitchburg from 1960 to 1968, and then at The Country Club in Brookline from 1968 to 1972. During these years, Tom and Nancy welcomed four daughters: Mary Elizabeth, Jennifer, Linda, and Amy.

In 1972, the family relocated to the Sutton/New London area of New Hampshire when Tom was hired as the first superintendent and grounds manager of the newly developed Eastman Golf Links and planned community in Grantham, New Hampshire. He served in this role until his retirement in 1990, leaving a lasting legacy through his dedication, leadership, and expertise.

Following retirement, Tom and Nancy enjoyed many years traveling together, with memorable trips to Hawaii, Canada, Ireland, and Scotland. Above all, they cherished their life together-raising their family, sharing adventures, and growing side by side through decades of marriage. At home, Tom found great joy in the simple pleasures of daily life, especially in the companionship of his beloved dogs, who were a constant source of comfort, laughter, and happiness throughout the years.

Tom was predeceased by his beloved wife, Nancy; his parents, John and Mary Curran; his siblings, Florence and John Jr.; and his twin sons, Thomas Michael and Gregory Steven.

He is survived by his daughters: Mary Elizabeth Brown of Lovell, Maine; Jennifer Curran of Sunapee, New Hampshire; Linda Curran of Louisville, Colorado; and Amy Curran Baker (Eric Baker) of Cortlandt Manor, New York. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held in Northampton, Massachusetts. The family extends heartfelt thanks to devoted caregiver Sally Morrill and the staff at Summercrest for their kindness and compassionate care during Tom's final years.

So sorry to hear this about Tom. He was a mentor for me and a main reason I chose golf course and resort management as a 40+ year career. The best person I ever worked for! My condolences to Mary Beth and the rest of Tom's family.

Mr. Curran was a very nice man. When I was a kid, we used to crawl under the fence from Putterham Meadows Golf Course to The Country Club to play a couple of holes and/or ball hawk in the. deep rough at TCC. Some of the groundskeepers there chased us off, and took the balls we found. Mr. Curran was kind enough to understand we were working-class kids and causing no harm to TCC, and just escorted us back to the fence. Once he asked for our names and called our high school golf coach to set up a day we could legally get on TCC. A very honorable man. You were lucky to have him as a dad.
