Moose Lake man killed in action

BY MELANIE EVANS
NEWS TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

A Moose Lake man, Moises Langhorst, 19, has died in combat in Iraq, superintendent of Moose Lake schools Tim Caroline told students and faculty Wednesday.

His death could not be immediately be confirmed by officials of the Pentagon nor the Marine Corps public affairs office in Camp Pendelton, Calif., where Langhorst had been stationed as a member of the 1st Marine Division, 4th Marine Regiment, Second Battalion G Company. But Sgt. Charles Moore said Langhorst was deployed to Iraq.

George Langhorst, Moises' father, declined to be interviewed by The Associated Press.

"We're not talking to the media at this time," he said. "We'd like three or four more days to grieve, then maybe we'll talk."

Carloine said news of the popular 2003 graduate's death shook the small Minnesota town, where flags were flying at half staff. Langhorst is the second Moose Lake-area Marine to die in less than a month. A Marine from Kettle River, Matt Milczark, 18, was found dead March 7 inside a chapel in Kuwait. Family members were told he died of a gunshot wound.

The two men were "buddies" and enlisted together, according to Caroline.

"It's just been very, very difficult. It just seems like this can't be really true, that it has claimed two of our own," said Caroline, who has known Langhorst since he was a child.

He described him as popular and a good athlete. Langhorst was active in the school's Knowledge Bowl, Math League, stage band, theater, football and track.

"He was just one of the most intelligent kids you'd ever meet," Caroline said.

Eight counselors from area schools and churches were assisting students at Moose Lake schools Wednesday.

Members of the news media were not granted access to students, but Caroline said they were expressing mixed emotions. Some were angry, questioning why the U.S. was fighting in Iraq, while others felt Langhorst is a hero.

News of Langhorst's death came the day after the Defense Department announced that Marine Cpl. Tyler R. Fey, 22, of Eden Prairie, had been killed Sunday after attacks in Anbar province Iraq.

"He was a kind and sweet kid. He was proud of his decision to be in the service and serve as a combat engineer," said his cousin, Char Loving.

Fey was assigned to the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force out of Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Including Langhorst and Fey, six Minnesota troops have now been killed in combat in Iraq.

Although it was not clear where Langhorst died, the military announced Wednesday that two Marines had been killed in recent fighting in Fallujah, Iraq, to uproot Sunni Muslim insurgents there.

A total 10 Marines are known to have been wounded since the Marine siege of Fallujah, west of Baghdad, began early Monday, when one Marine was killed. The Marines have not given a full casualty count, nor have they named those killed.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and to also let the Langhorst Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one, Moises A. Langhorst US Marine Private 1st Class. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

To the family of Pfc. Moises A. Langhorst:

As you may know, the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation has honored your loved one at its Memorial Day Sunday worship service (each year in May) … since the time of your fallen hero's ultimate sacrifice. We will continue to pay tribute to our nation's veterans … lest we ever forget!

Now we would like to honor you … as the next-of-kin … who have also paid a great price on the altar of liberty. On Sunday 29 September at 11:00 a.m. we will host a Gold Star Family Sunday.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship … as we pay tribute to your sacrifice. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain (Colonel-Retired) Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “By Dying, We Live.” The special music will be the husband/wife vocal/piano — Wickman Duo. Following the worship experience, your family is invited to attend a social time in our Fellowship Hall … with some light refreshments.

As this historic chapel has limited seating, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Some time has gone by since Moy's death in Iraq, in fact I doubt anyone will read this. But I felt I had to add an entry all the same. Moy is a cousin of mine by marriage, regretfully I never really got to know him. Although he has effected my life greatly. I am currently enlisted and have been in the Army for almost 8 years now. I have been deployed to Kuwait several times. During this last deployment, I received orders to Korea. This would take me away from that part of the world. After returning to the States, I ended up at Ft. Benning Georgia once again. Although I was in a non deployable unit. After I learned of Moy's death, it made me realize that I was a soldier and my place was out there on the line. After some great thought, I re-enlisted back to 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Div. to redeploy back to Iraq. Where I am currently at as I write this. I want people to read this and realize,a soldier's life isn't easy. We are faced with life and death decisions daily. As for Moy, I only have brief memorys of him throughout my life. But I can tell you this, he grew from a boy to a man and became a soldier. The act in raising your right hand and taking an oath that you are bound to, is honorable all in it's own. I have great respect for all the boys in Moose lake who left their family behind to serve. Unfortuantly Moy made the ultimate sacrifice, which can happen to any one of us during a time of war. But I tell you this, his death was not for nothing and will not be forgotten....

From one servicemember to another, you are my hero! I will not forget the sacrifice you made for me and the USA. So many people don't realize that you gave your LIFE! Your family has the utmost honor and respect in my eyes, and you will always be in my heart forever and always, especially when I'm in Iraq again. I will think of you everytime I have to fight, and hopefully fight with the courage you showed when you were over there. God Bless. Love.

If I knew that Moy was gone forever, I'm not sure how I'd deal with it. But, I know he just made it to Heaven sooner than me, and he is without a doubt enjoying it! Moy has always been a part of my life, and if I could be half the person he was, I'd be very lucky. He has shown me courage, integrity, and loyalty, and will forever be remembered. To the family, I thank you for Moy. To Moy, thanks for being my hero. With love and remembrance, Carina.

Dear George, Judy, and Mat,

I could fill a book with Moy's positive attributes and the memories I have of him. But to me the two words that describe him best are the Marine Corps motto: Semper Fidelis. Moy truly was Always Faithful, not only to God, Country, and Corps but also to his friends. They say the streets of heaven are guarded by United States Marines. I can think of no one better for the job then Moy and Milly. I imagine they reported to their new duty station with a smile on their face and determination in their hearts. When it comes our turn to join them, I have no doubt they will have the situation secure and squared away. Semper Fidelis.

What I will always remember most about Moy was the way in which he was never unkind to anyone and never seemed to pass judgement on anyone either. He was quick to laugh and to smile. He livened all classes I had with him (as, I think in many cases, he knew more than the teachers!) I also remember the crazy way he always held his pens. I find comfort in knowing he is with Matt now and they will rest for eternity in paradise together.

Thank you Moy and to your family for your sacrifice.

Dear Family of Moy

I am so terribly sorry for your tragic loss...Even though I did not know Moy personally it hurts to see how it effects you and everyone else in such a small town...Moy's death came as a shock to all of us but he is in a better place now...he will always be in our hearts and we will never ever forget that wonderful smile and that charming sense of humor. He was a brilliant kid and was very well-liked...My sister Heidi Preston went to school with both Matt and Moy and it hurt her a lot to hear of what happened.. If you ever need anything ever just know that not only are we here but so is the entire town of Moose Lake/Sturgeon Lake. May god be with you.

Dear George and Judy,

How deeply saddened I was to be notified of Moi's death. I only know you George and Moi from our handball games. However, even with such a brief encounter I was struck by two things. First, that Moi was a "class act" - very respectful and humble (his learning curve with the game was quite excelerated). And second affection and comaraderie that existed between Moi and George.

I give you my sincere thanks for your efforts in developing such a outstanding person who gave completely of himself for the sake of others - there is no greater love!

I light a candle in my window

And a candle in my heart

I wipe a tear from my eye

This death do we part

I hold the hand of a friend

And the memories in my mind

Of all the love and laughter

That you left behind

The flags still fly at half-mast

We still live our lives

But I would give mine in a second

To give you one more night

The country sings the glories

That you gave your life for

And though we miss you dearly

We love you even more

I light a candle in my window

I wipe a tear from my eye

I'm sorry this came too late

And that I didn't say goodbye.

I was a classmate and friend of Moy and Matt. I will miss them dearly... My prayers and heart are with you.

George Judy & Mat,

Moy was an awesome friend and a goofy cool character. There were so many awesome little quirks and Moyisms that all worked together to make him who he was... (like Coconut treasures, Moy noises, drawings, his truck) Moy definately didn't live in vain, and nobody who dies with a strong faith in Jesus Christ dies in vain. Of all the people in our grade, I know most of all that Moy had a firm faith foundation. We talked a lot about life, where it would lead us, and stuff like that. Its really hard to think of him as anything but full of life here on Earth, but now we all know where he's at. May your memory be blessed, -Colt

I remember.

I remember chubby little cheeks and a ready smile.

I remember inquisitive, grown up questions that made me laugh in wonder sometimes.

I remember snacks in the kitchen and dancing to Ritchie Valens "La Bamba" before you would take your nap.

I thought of you at times; recognized the face in the Knowledge Bowl picture in the paper even before I saw the name.

My nine year old son, who never got to meet his you, kept the graduation announcement of his "Soldier Cousin" (as he called you)pinned to his bulletin board from the day it came in the mail. It is still there.

The light in your father's eyes-

The joy in your mother's heart-

The big brother, the grandson, the nephew, the cousin, the friend.

The soldier.

To the family and friends of Moises, I do not know you but you are in my constant toughts and prayers. My husband is a Marine, and is over in Iraq fighting right now. You have faced the worst news immaginable. I send you all my love and my tears. Moy is a brother to my husband and all Marines, he gave the ultimate scarafice for them, and if they were in the same situation would have for him. He was an honorable man, and always be proud. I can only imagine what you are dealing with, it scares me beyond belief. I pray for your strength and honor your courage. I send all of my love to his family and friends, he is a fallen member of the MC family and has touched the heart of the world in many ways. I hope that words can do something to comfort your pain, and that my prayers will sometime bring you peace.

Dear George, Judy, Mat, and family,

No words can undo the suffering you are now experiencing. As a parent, I can project a little of the nightmare you now live. Moy was your pride and joy and you had so many good reasons for that pride. He was everyone’s “American Son.” My own son Brandon is his age. I can’t imagine life without him. And you know Brandon’s good friend Levi Angell was also lost in combat this week. Brandon is in college in New Mexico, and feels bad he cannot be back home during these hard times.

Perhaps that is the secret for finding any peace in your hearts, and that is to know how many of the rest of us are feeling such shock and pain for you and with you. You are all loved and in our thoughts and prayers. Maybe our shared sadness and group love for you will bring you some consolation. Salute to America’s finest!

Dear George, Judy, Mat, and family,

I am deeply sorry for the untimely tragedy that you have all have had to endure. We all know Moy is in good hands now, but he will be so missed. I felt very close to Moy, and have had many fun times with him. I really enjoyed spending time with him over Christmas break, and I've been looking forward to his homecoming. I cannot believe he is gone; Moy seemed invincible to me. I will miss his intellectual wit, his guitar playing, the twinkle in his eye, his mischievious grin, and all his unconventional Moyisms. I loved the way he could always make myself and others laugh. I will cherish the memories I have of him, and I will keep Moy in my heart and my prayers always. Love, Rachel

Dearest George, Judy and Matt,

Some of my fondest memories are of the trips you and the boys made to Washington to visit us,as well as the hospitality you made available when WE visited bach home in MN. Moi was always so kind to allow me to stay in his room. When Mother called me with the news of this event I couldnt help but think of the visit where we had lunch @ Vacation Bible School with Moi serving. That helped me realize that though he is no longer with us, he IS home, with the Lord. May the knowledge of his faith strengthen you and keep you in this difficult time. Although I will not be able to be there in person, you are ALL in my prayers. May God grant you HIS Peace and comfort.
