WHATELY, MA - Professor Stylianos "Stan" Panagiotis Scordilis, a cherished member of the Dept. of Biological Sciences and the Biochemistry Program at Smith College passed away peacefully on Monday, December 29, 2025, after a life devoted to science, teaching, and faith.

Professor Scordilis was a passionate biochemist and educator whose work focused on the molecular and biochemical basis of skeletal muscle function and development. He began this research at the National Institutes of Health. At Smith College he was widely respected for his rigorous yet supportive teaching style and for his dedication to undergraduate research. His laboratory provided generations of students with hands-on experience in biochemical and molecular techniques, shaping many future careers in science, medicine, and education. Beyond his classroom and lab presence, he oversaw the building of Ford Hall, a monument to state of the art science in several fields.

A committed mentor and colleague, Professor Scordilis believed deeply in the transformative power of education and inquiry. His scholarship, collaborative spirit, and care for students left a lasting imprint on the Smith College scientific community.

Guided throughout his life by his Greek Orthodox faith, Professor Scordilis approached his work and relationships with humility, integrity, and compassion. His faith was a quiet but steady source of strength, informing his commitment to service, learning, and mentorship.

He will be remembered with gratitude and affection by his family, friends, colleagues, and the many students whose lives he touched. He was a beloved brother, uncle, great uncle, father and grandfather. His legacy as a scientist, teacher, and person of faith endures.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 8, 2026 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 410 Main St., Holyoke from 9:30 to 11:00 A.M. with a Service at 11:00 A.M. at the church.
