Janet Hodos Obituary

Janet Gilman Hodos

Greenfield and Florence, MA - Janet Gilman Hodos passed away in the early afternoon of January 28, 2026, at the Hospice of the Fisher Home in Amherst, Massachusetts. She met her journey with Parkinson's disease with courage and grace and was able to leave on her own terms, with dignity and peace.

Janet was born on March 27, 1940, in Malden, Massachusetts, to Sara and Isadore Gilman, and grew up surrounded by a large, tightly knit family. She graduated from Malden High School and earned her BS degree from Simmons College in the Class of 1962. During her senior year, she was set up on a New Year's Eve blind date with Herb Hodos and quickly realized they were meant to be. They married on July 3, 1963, beginning a loving partnership that would define their shared life of family, service, and community.

In 1964, Janet and Herb moved to Springfield, Massachusetts, where their first daughter, Andrea, was born. Two years later, they relocated to Greenfield when Janet's cousin, Burt Winer, invited Herb to join the law firm of Levy & Winer, where he would later become a partner. In 1968, they welcomed their second daughter, Emily.

For more than forty years in Greenfield, Janet and Herb were deeply committed to serving their community. Janet devoted countless hours to civic life, serving on committees and boards for organizations including the Junior Branch of the Franklin County Public Hospital, the Franklin County Arts Council, United Way of Franklin County, the Pioneer Valley Symphony, the Interfaith Council of Franklin County, and the Greenfield Council on Aging. She was also a Girl Scout troop leader, nurturing confidence and leadership in young girls.

A lifelong member of Hadassah, Janet served for many years as president of the Greenfield chapter and as an officer of the Northeast Region. She was especially passionate about the work of the Hadassah Medical Organization. Janet was also a devoted and beloved member of Temple Israel of Greenfield, where she was known for her warmth and her genuine welcome to newcomers. She served in many roles at the synagogue, including chairing the committee that dedicated the congregation's new sanctuary.

In 2009, Janet and Herb moved to the Bear Hill Condominium complex in Florence, Massachusetts, where they quickly built a vibrant community around them. During her years in Northampton, Janet became active with the Movement Voter Project and engaged in local activism supporting refugees and immigrants settling in Hampshire County through Congregation B'nai Israel.

Whether in Greenfield or Northampton, Janet treasured hosting visitors from near and far, from short visits on the porch to extended stays, offering generous and deeply human hospitality. Her home was always open, often with a healthy, home-cooked meal. She leaves behind a legacy of community-building and compassion that she modeled for her children and grandchildren, each of whom carries her influence forward in their own way.

She is survived by her husband, Herb Hodos, retired Greenfield District Court Judge; her brother, Arthur Gilman; her sister, Harriet Lawrence; her daughters, Andrea Hodos (Aryeh Cohen) and Emily Hodos (Eric Phelps); her grandchildren, Shachar, Oryah (Elisheva), Gabriel, and Elijah; her nieces, Karen, Courtney, and Margot; and many beloved cousins.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Janet's memory may be made to the Hospice of the Fisher Home, the Movement Voter Project, or a charity of your choice that reflects Janet's passions and values.

The funeral is taking place on Sunday, February 1 at Temple Israel of Greenfield starting at 11am.

We moved to Kimball Farms a year ago and immediately noticed that our neighbors directly across the hall had an identical pig door stop like ours. What a crazy coincidence! We soon met Herb and Janet, the most welcoming and kind neighbors we could ever hope for. Goes to show how special pig lovers are! Janet always had a smile that was infectious and brightened our days. Although we knew her too briefly and at a time of her struggles, we truly enjoyed the time we spent with Janet and the warm person she was.

Janet and I were classmates at Simmons. I was pleased to reconnect at one of our reunions when my husband, Andy and I sat with her and Herb and shared the common aspects of our lives. In addition to having the same first name, we were both married to lawyers, had two daughters and beloved grandchildren and were engaged in civic and spiritual activism. I am sending sincere condolences to her family. I know her memory will be an inspiration and a blessing.

Herb - Len and I were so sorry to hear of Janet's passing. When we first moved to South Deerfield and went to services at Temple Israel when we were synagogue shopping, Janet insisted that we come back with you for tea after services and subsequently invited us for dinner. I never forgot that. She was a warm, wonderful woman. We are thinking of you.

In 1968, when my family-Donna, Walter, Lisa, and I-settled in Greenfield, the first to welcome us were our next-door neighbors, Herb and Janet, along with their two daughters, Andrea and Emily. We quickly became close friends, a bond that endured even after I retired from my ophthalmology practice and moved to Southern California.

I often think back fondly to the trip the four of us took to Napa Valley, driving my new Tesla. It was a wonderful adventure filled with laughter and memories. Over the years, Herb and Janet made it a point to visit us whenever they were in Los Angeles visiting Andrea and her family.

Donna passed away in 2019 and now rests at Green River Cemetery in Greenfield. Each year, when I visit her grave, I also make sure to stop by and see Herb and Janet. They always greeted me with warmth and kindness, eager to catch up. Two years ago, I was fortunate to visit them in Lenox. Last October, I had hoped to see them again, but Janet had contracted COVID, and Herb didn´t want me to be exposed.

This year, when I return to Greenfield for my yearly pilgrimage, I will sadly miss Janet´s smile and her gracious welcome. Farewell, dear Janet.

Janet was remarkable. She and Herb inspired the intellect and humanism of their two daughters, both of whom I was privileged to teach at Stoneleigh Burnham. Their sense of community grew from their home life and I´m sure they continue to share their parents´ nurturing spirit with others. Wonderful memories and heartfelt sympathy ...

As a friend of Janet´s brother, Arthur I had the pleasure of meeting Janet at her home in Greenfield. She was a gracious host as we enjoyed a pleasant afternoon on her beautiful porch. I know she struggled with her illness but met that challenge with courage and dignity. May she rest in peace.

Janet was my high school classmate. We met at Kimball Farms lifecare community and didn´t recognize each other at first, but so much fun when we did! We pored through our high school yearbook together remembering fellow students and events. I am so glad we made the connection and I really loved our short but wonderful friendship. I admire Janet so much for the way she handled her terrible disease.

Janet was a valued, long time friend. She shared our simchas with us and we visited when time and distance allowed. She kept me in touch with Hadassah by the work she did with them. I will miss her but applaud her long fight with Parkinson's. Rest in peace Janet. Sincere love and sympathy,

I knew Janet through a variety of connections, and I am deeply saddened by her passing. I admired her ever-helpful kindness and positive energy. For 60 years at least, I´ve seen Janet´s love of her family and her dedication to her community. I will remember her always, with respect and gratitude.
