Not a day goes by that your memory does not drive my determination to be a better Marine/person.

I was with you the day that you died, I didn't know you, I didn't know your name, I didn't know how much you meant to so many of your fellow Marines.

Under the cloverleaf became a hectic, emotional rush of activity when you were brought in. All of those who could, did everything in their power for you - from the 1stSgt who drove you in to the bystanders (like me) who helped the Docs were they could. The Corpsmen and surgeon that were there worked at a fever pitch. Your brothers sat in the dust and cried - forever changed by your passing.

The three journalists who were there were vehemently instructed to keep their cameras down or they would not be able to find all the pieces of them (thanks to Lt. Denail). But one of them, a Viet Nam vet who was there working for AP, surreptitiously took a picture at the moment that the Lt. announced your passing. With your brothers gathered over you in prayer, and your other brothers looking over you, heads bowed.

From that day your brothers changed. They wanted to avenge you and the fulfilled that oath in spades. You inspired them to take the fight to the enemy - and they answered the call.

That picture is the first thing I see in my office every day, and the last thing I see before I leave. When I look at it I can still feel the spring warmth - smell the burning diesel - feel the sweaty starch of my cammies - and remember the air of loss that hung over us all.

I didn't know you - but you've made more of an impact on my life than you could possibly imagine. I hope that makes you rest a little easier guarding Heaven's streets.

To Blake's family,

I knew your son, and he was a good man. We went to junior high and high school together, and I always thought very highly of him. I've heard how things happened that day, and I can tell you without a doubt in my heart that Blake is a hero, my hero. One thing I will never forget about him was that he seemed to be immune to BS - always seeking what was right. Of course you also wouldn't need me to tell you how bright he was.

Even though we were the same age, I stood on those same yellow footsteps a couple of years after Blake. I actually found out about his fate while I was in the first few weeks of boot camp.

If there is anything that I can ever do for anyone in your family, it would be my honor to serve you.

To Blake,

Thank you for your bravery, your righteousness, your service, and your example. We'll catch up someday on the other side amigo.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

It has been just over a year since I held this fine young man as his life ebbed away in the failing light of a Fallujah evening. There was nothing to be done for his wound, but that did not stop us from trying.

I pray that you will find some solace in the great honor paid to him by those who wear the uniform and continue to fight.

To the Family of Michael Blake Wafford:

Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss. There are not enough words to express the sorrow I feel for you and yours at this time. You are not alone – for all family members of Marines weep with you today.

I always knew Marines were a unique breed, but until my own son joined the Corps, I never really understood. The qualities I saw in him, I soon saw in all Marines. Honor, Courage, Commitment, these are not just words for a Marine. Their desire to Serve and Protect, their sense of Brotherhood and Family, their dedication, integrity, your son had all this and so much more – like all Marines, he was and is a very special Soul.

I like to think that sweet Michael is now with his Marine brothers and sisters, who passed before him, still standing tall and proud, still protecting and serving us all in a higher and better place. His service was greatly appreciated, and shall not be forgotten, I am forever grateful. My sorrow is the loss of such a wonderful man.

May you find some small measure of peace in knowing you are loved and thought of daily. May God’s loving arms wrap you and yours tightly, may He bless you with the courage and strength you need to see this through. You and yours are in my prayers.

I was proud to learn that Blake was a member of the U.S. military but deeply sadden by his loss. I had Blake in my honors history class during his junior high years. He was a fine young man with great potential. Blake was liked by his peers and his teachers.He was the type of person that wanted to make a positive contribution and his service to his nation reflected that quality. Dear Regina, Michael & Brooke:

May the Lord be with you during this most difficult time. May you have what the Bible refers to as "the peace that passes ALL understanding" so that you can know there is comfort for those days when you don't understand why this happened. Our son is currently in Iraq as a Marine - we can only imagine the pain of your loss. But I'm confident that much good will come from your son's/brother's death and that it will NOT be in vain. You'll be in our prayers in the coming days and months to come. Semper Fi.
