5am, Im just laying in bed and thought of an old, good friend from high school and googled his name. We went to Westfield together. I remember Mike talking to me about LITERALLY launching satellites, and what he could do if he got a few satellites into orbit.
I always admired Mike. He was brilliant beyond the imagination.
This obituary caught me off guard. I expected him to be a CEO in silicone valley, or something.
My condolences to the Weger family.
You are up there beyond the satellites Mike! Much live, brother!

Michael, Natalie and I both miss you. I think of you often and tell my daughter Darby fond memories we shared. She had to to a HERO report for history for Veterans day and she chose YOU. Seven years ago your family and friends and other military families shared the sadness of losing three fine soldiers who held so much promise, not only through their military service, but also through their strengths of character that could have influenced the well being of their families, friends, and communities in the future. October 12th is a day I will never forget and more importantly Mike is someone whom I will ALWAYS remember. He was my gunner, he was a damn good soldier, and he was very cool under fire. I hope that his son will grow up knowing that his Daddy was a very smart , very talented , and a very dedicated American Soldier and to all of the family especially MOM and DAD, my wife and I will always keep all of you in our thoughts and prayers. I want you to know as well that we went to Wings Over Houston today and saw The Fallen Soldiers of Texas wall and I placed my hand on his picture and it took me back to our times together. I would love to have a picture of him. I have been over twice 2004 and 2006 and they are sending us again in Nov 2009.

Today's Houston Chronicle article documenting the falling of another hero from Houston prompted me to search for more stories about Mike. As a debate partner of Mike's at Westfield, I have fond memories of his generous nature, his zest for life, and his contagious positive outlook. Though I sadly fell out of touch with Mike, he is certainly remembered, greatly appreciated, and an enduring hero in my family.

Weger was once a soldier in my squad, smart, ambitious and best of all...audacious. I was on the patrol 12 OCT 07 when the commander called us and said he was coming out with Mike, Jaime and the XO. I saw the explosion just a few meters in front of us. There was nothing we could do. We evacuated Jaime, Mike and CPT P were already gone. I will NEVER forget this day. Every year I will celebrate the memories I have of those three. They were GREAT AMERICANS.

Michael, you were my best friend in High School. When my cousin Natale and I would be upset your hugs always made things better.
I miss the way you would make me laugh uncontrollably and your amazing crooked smile. I never thought I would find a boy with a heart as big as mine - and then came YOU. You had an amazing personality and were insanely creative. I miss those carefree crazy Metallica days and our trips to the beach and those incredible sandcastles you could make. You will always have a piece of my heart Michael. I miss you terribly. I never thought I would find you like this.
I listen to SHINEDOWN and their song HEROES and I think of you and your Bravery and Deep Convictions you always had to Pursue Truth and what was Right. I have struggled for over a year trying to find some closure regarding you. Then God said to me, "You don't have
to say goodbye, Hope, Because you will see him again someday."
I know the pain I continue to feel inside cannot possibly compare to the loss your family feels for you. I am not only sad but angry. Angry for the loss of your young life. You had so much to give to this world.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. We are friends of Dara Coburn in Fort Smith. My wife Lynn works with Dara as a physical therapist. My wife and I are both veterans of the US Army. We were both medically discharged due to service connected disabilities. Having served for more than 10 years, it broke my heart to have to leave the service. It was my life. Know this, I would have gladly taken your sons place were it possible. I believe there are many soldiers who feel the same. No soldier wants to lose a comrade in arms, most would rather take their place. My sympathies to you and your family. A country rife with strife and oppression is now on its way to democracy due to your sons and others contributions and sacrifices. (YOUR sacrifice is also not forgotten!) There are many very grateful Iraquis over there as well, believe it!

I knew of Michael through a mutual friend for years, but only came to meet him a little over a year before he passed. During our times together, through conversations and impromptu debates on everything from politics to religion to jiu-jitsu, I came to respect Michael and consider him a friend. I recognized early on that Michael was a rare breed. An intelligent person who lived life with vigor and conviction. When I heard of Michael's passing, I felt a deep loss, knowing that something valuable that had begun would not continue. I can't imagine what that loss must feel like for his friends who knew him longer, and for his family. I thank Michael for his sacrifice, and I thank his family for theirs. Michael's name will never be forgotten in my house.

I served in Iraq with Michael and also Dennis and Jaime, the soldiers who died with him. Truly incredible guys whose hearts were big enough to see the good in the people of Iraq, despite being distrusted and hated by some of them. These guys' service is bigger than all the arguments for or against the deployment. They died serving humanity, not just national policy. You just had to know them. They believed in what they were doing.
