Cody Wentz Obituary

WILLISTON -- Spc. Cody Lee Wentz, 21, Williston, died Nov. 4, 2004, from injuries sustained from an explosives attack near Balad, Iraq, while serving with Company A of the 141st Engineer Combat Battalion. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at Williston High School Gymnasium, please use south gym doors. Chaplin Captain David Johnson will officiate and cremation will take place. Following the funeral service, lunch will be served at the old gym at Williston State College, use student center door.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Fulkerson Funeral Home, Williston.

Cody Lee Wentz was born Feb. 16, 1983, in Williston, the son of Kenneth and Joyce (Schultes) Wentz. He was raised in Williston and spent his elementary school years attending Hagan Elementary School. He graduated from Williston High School in May 2001. While in high school, he worked as a waiter at Bonanza, Jerry's Fireside, Missouri Mike's and Kalley's Kitchen.

Cody was a wonderful, caring and loving person. He liked a wide variety of music, everything from rock to country. His feelings for people was as diverse as his feelings for music, he loved people from young to old and people of all ages loved him as well. He had an unusual way of connecting with people of all agesÉ it was unique to the type of person that made Cody special.

Muscle cars of the 60's and 70's were a passion and his knowledge was unparalleled. He looked at them with a love and respect that is seldom seen. Cody had a passion for football unmatched by anyone. He lived, ate and breathed the game. His hope and dream was to, one day, play as an NFL player. His knowledge of the game and his desire to study it had to be seen to be appreciated.

The only thing in the world that meant more to Cody than football was his family and friends. Anyone who knew Cody knew that underneath that big, tough exterior was the heart of a lionÉ a very tame and loving lion. His love and respect for friends and family was truly his defining trait as a person. Cody had a loving, caring personality we should all try to embrace and try to emulate as a race of people. The world will be a sadder place without him and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him or had the pleasure of having him touch their life.

His desire to succeed was only outdone by his desire to make everyone around him happy. He would lend a hand to help out anytime or anywhere. He truly was one of a kind, the best.

Cody enlisted in the National Guard in November 2000 and was deployed to Iraq on Feb. 16, 2004. He was a member of Company A of the 141st Engineer Combat Battalion. Cody lost his life while returning from a mission near Balad on Thursday night, November 4, 2004.

Surviving Cody are his parents, Kenny and Joyce, Williston; two brothers, Kelly and his wife, Lori, and their daughter, Elizabeth, Dickinson; and Jason and his children, Dillon and Whitney, Williston; his paternal grandparents, Ray and Lois Wentz, Jamestown; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Preceding him in death were his maternal grandparents, Edna and Art Schultes; his maternal grandmother, Deloris Wentz; and three aunts, Judy Davis, Dyann Schweigert and Stella Schultes.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Coyote Foundation, P.O. Box 1407, Williston, N.D. 58802.

I know you remember where you were on 9/11 and I also remember where I was. Only a few years separated us and I joined the North Dakota National Guard in March 2006. There were many of us that joined during this time and deployments were just a part of the commitment. Thank you for your inspiration and kind heart. I am now going into flight paramedic training and eventually wish to become a CRNA. The National Guard has been extremely beneficial for my professional career. After 12 years I am honored to have this next assignment as a flight paramedic. I remember your sacrifice in 2004 and the devastation it brought to the community and Williston High School. I committed myself to excellence then and continue to submit myself to training in the healthcare profession. As a paramedic, I never want to see the physical wounds of war but have come to the realization that it is a part of our human existence. Healthcare is coming along way to save traumatic/medical emergencies. Your story is inspiring and I have kept you in the back of my mind since I was in high school. Thank you again for giving me the inspiration I need to take this next step as a flight paramedic and eventually a CRNA.

I have suffered the anguish of seeing many Soldiers, Airman and Marines die on my watch, and Cody was one of them. I remember the night he came in to the ER, I was the RN taking care of him at Balad. There were four of us working to save him, we tried so very hard, but his injuries were devastating. I held his hand and said the Lords Prayer, I did that with many who passed. Cody injuries were bad, but he was not in pain and he was not alone. I followed the stories about him over the years and what he wanted to do in his life. The irony of him wanting to be a nurse and help others was admirable and noble. Cody was young and that hit us all pretty hard..lost youth and dreams is devastating for anyone to bear. Cody was one that stuck with me over the years, I suppose it was because he passed from one world to the next while I (we) tried to save him. As I struggle with my own inner demons about what I could have done to save everyone, I wanted the family of Cody to know that even in the darkest hour, he was not alone, he was with Angels, and he was a Hero to us all.

I am just a stranger, finally, saying goodbye. I have suffered the anguish of seeing many Soldiers, Airman and Marines die on my watch, and Cody was one of them. On Saturday I wore Cody's name on my bib for the Cpl Christopher G. Scherer Memorial "I Did The Grid" Run/Walk. Every step I ran honored Cody's heroism and ultimate sacrifice while serving in the armed forces of the United States of America. I completed all three events and rang the bell each time in his memory. Team Chris wants you to know how much we all appreciate and remember our Fallen.

To the family of Spc. Cody L. Wentz:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.

Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

In Memory of Cody ~ (Debra Estep)

November 6, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Cody, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Wentz,
You both are in my prayers daily. Cody is a ever present reminder to me of the price of freedom. He will always be my hero.

I missed the opportunity to see you at TAPS this year. But I am confident that I will see you again in the future. I hope you're summer is going well. Keep in touch.

I love you.

July 29, 2007

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Le Ron A. Wilson (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

To the Wentz family. Much time has passed since we lost SPC Cody Wentz and yet I find it difficult not to think of that particular evening in Iraq. My own father was killed while working in the oilfield industry just this past August 2006. Sudden loss is difficult to bear. However, when I got that call, it reminded me of the radio call I received informing us of SPC Wentz. We still talk and think about him and the others we lost you know...Soldiers...when we get together...just wanted you to know. Those of us who were there will never forget.
God Bless you and may He continue to provide for you a celebration of the life of Cody Wentz.

Cody is my inspiration when I am attempting to overcome great adversity. He consumes my thoughts when i'm training in the weightroom or on the football field. I can hear him, standing next to me saying, "come on you big monkey!" or "im watching you Hoffelt!" I have never met another person with such drive and motivation as him, nor do I think I ever will. I keep something in my locker reminding me of him all the time...he is gone but never forgoten.

I knew Cody in High School. I was on the cheerleading team and knew Cody as a friend. When we won a game, the smile on his face was priceless. He always loved the treats we brought the guys before the games. He also liked his posters on his locker to be extra decorated! He had such a passion for the sport and his friends. He always had this grin on his face and knew how to make a person smile.
He is forever in our hearts and deeply missed.

Mr. & Mrs. Wentz:

I want to express to you my deepest sympathies for the loss of Cody. I was in Cody's platoon in Iraq and was with him the night he passed. That night will never be forgotten and I will never forget Cody. My greatest memory of Cody was in Fort Carson when we were training to deploy and we were training on how to clear a building. I was "shot" by our MILES system and was playing wounded. Another soldier came to drag me out but with all my gear on he didn't get me very far before he was too tired to continue and I was still laying in the middle of the hallway. That's when I heard this huge thumping sounds like a stampeed of bulls were coming down the hallway. I looked up to see Cody running at me. He grabbed my by the loop on my vest with one hand and took off running down the hallway with me dragging behind him. He was pulling me so fast I actually had to arc my back and lean on my canteens because I was getting carpet burns on my butt. He literally threw me into a room and I went slidding across the floor like I was on ice. Then he ran out the door to go grab another soldier. Cody was a great guy and had a huge heart and he will be forever missed.

Cody,

I love you. I miss you everyday. I passed the boards and now I’m an RN. I share my success with you. Your confidence in me inspired me when my confidence was lacking. You were an exceptional friend and would have made an excellent nurse. You were kind, gentle, and caring. You are forever in my heart.

Mr. and Mrs Wentz

I also served with Cody in Iraq and I can only say that I was so proud of the way he carried himself in that tough situation. He always made sure that everyone around him was working to their full potential and doing the very best they could. I can only imagine how he played the game of football. I think it would be a little scary to see him on the other side of the ball. I can only imagine him playing football all the time in heaven. Play well my friend -- for you did so very very well while you were here with us.

Cody,

Unfortunately I never had the opportunity of meeting you. I met your parents and friend this Memorial Day at a TAPS conference.Their love for you is so great and their pain so intense. They held each other up during the conference as I'm sure they are still doing today. Since meeting your parents, I have been able to gather stories from the newspaper about you and have been able to piece together parts of your life. What a beautiful person you were and what a great gift you were to your family. This October I will be running in the Marine Corp Marathon in your memory. It is such an honor for me to be able to carry your name with me for such a short distance. I have your picture that your mother gave me and wear it on my hat when I run. I will be thinking of you during the run and remembering the beautiful soul that was only here for a short period of time, who managed to touch so many lives in a positive way. My very best to your family as I shall always holdy you and them in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Mr and Mrs Wentz, I have had the great honor to have served the United States. The greatest country in the world. I know that Cody felt this pride and does today. So long as his memeory remains he lives in all our hearts. I may never have known him but I feel that I would recognize him, a man with a glow of pride in hearing the national anthem , a smile on his face at seeing the flag in the sun , a look of confidnece in uniform. In short a patriot! A person like many of us in uniform, An example to all.

I didn't know Cody personally but I read many great stories about him in the newspaper. He truly was a great human being fighting for his country. As I sent my grandchildren off to school today (Whitney and Dillon) it reminded me of so many times I sent Cody off to school. I was working alot then and wasn't always home when he got home. Most of the time he would stay at the Herald tell I got off work or would always call and ask when I would be home. He never liked being alone as Dustin Anderson could tell you. Finally he got old enough to play football on a field but it was flag football he cried all the way home cause he couln't tackle anyone. Then came 7th grade. He got his uniform and wore it the whole time after school then he slept in it I knew that wouldn't last long cause he is hot all the time so there it was on the floor in the morning with the rest of his mess. Then he had to lose weight so he could catch some one to tackle and he did.His determination to win the game and be the best he could be got the best of him. Freshmen year his coach was Fred Douglas, and he was the man Cody looked up to his whole high school years. If he needed to figure out what he was doing wrong, he always turned to him, even training to go to Mary college he had Fred spend alot of his time watching him run until he droped. He also knew he had to get strong so Leo steped in and helped him with that, Cody even helped pay for a bench while over in Iraq he never got to use, it was a gift from Cody to Leo for all the help he gave him. Time to get a licence, that was easy so he thought he finally had to study the book. I remember getting in the car and Cody said what do you think your doing? I said driving. He opened up the door and grabed me put me on to the ground and said get in.It brings me back to the time when he couln't get me down and would try every week tell he got me down and had to see the look on his dads face when he did.The time came he bought a car that didn't run pulled it to our drive way. Ken said not here you don't but it was to late. He paid 3,000 for it and didn't even run I was so mad I couln't speak but Cody said I'll get it running and with alot of his friends help and more, he did. That car was his pride and joy and his plan was to buy alot of old cars so 3 days before he left he bought a MarauderX-100 1969 for $1,000 JUST BECAUSE THE SONG SAID.So it was his favoite song.Best go I,ve taken enough of your time I hope to read letters from you also about Cody, times spent with him. Thanks for all your support during this terrible time.Love Joyce Wentz

Joyce and Kenny,

Cody's love of life and football was evident to me from the first time I met him. I coach football, love the sport, and teach high school. I was lucky enough to visit with Cody on many issues, and although we didn't agree with each other all the time (Emmitt Smith vs. Barry Sanders) the jovial cantor and respect was there. Being able to lift with him, talk football technique and visiting was like still being able to be a coach. Knowing him has made me a better person and coach. I am coaching now, and I think of him often as we try to instill the desire, work ethic and love of the game and life as I know Cody had. Thank you for all the continued support. God Bless You.

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Wentz,

I have never met Cody, but feel a sense of loss as he was a fellow soldier. As a member of the 188th Army Band, I had the honor of playing for our troops at the homecomings and hearing the stories of our fallen soldiers. The one common thread that I hear in all of the stories is that Cody and his fallen comrades were doing a job that they were proud to do, and served a country they loved. I'm saddened at the loss of these brave soldiers, but extremely proud of what they have done. I will pray for Cody and the rest of your family and I hope that all of your memories of Cody are good ones.

I was the 164 Battalion Commander when Cody was mobilized as a part of the 141. I got to know him during training and mobilization processing...enough to know he loves this time of year and football. He also knew that freedom wasn't free and dedicated himself to a very worthy cause that won't be forgotten. The two of you have shown tremendous strength through all of this and serve as an inspiration to those of us in uniform. Our thoughts and prayers are with you...we won't forget!

Dearest Mr & Mrs. Wentz; My condolences go out to you and your family in the loss of your precious son. I am a helicopter pilot for the ND guard and have two sons that are also in the military. I can only imagine the depth of your loss and the sadness you both must feel. I can merely offer my appreciation as a career officer for young men like Cody that are dedicated and patriotic enough to take up the honorable service as a soldier defending our cherished freedoms. As soldiers his sacrifice is a fate we are all aware of and are willing to accept, yet when it happens to a loved one, a son or daughter, it is so difficult to accept and perhaps to rationalize. Please know how proud we all are of Cody, and you as parents to mentor a young man courageous enogh to step up and serve his fellow man in an effort as noble as he chose. I humbly salute you and Cody as I peer into our beautiful flag anytime I proudly stand and pay my personal respects during our National Anthem. Thank you and God bless you all.

I am a member of Co B 141st ECB, I did not know Cody nor did I meet him, but we all went together as one family. I think of all the Soldiers we lost in our Battalion, and the ones that were injured. They are in my thoughts always. I also think of the Soldiers that are still serving and the ones that will continue to serve as time goes on. I have also offered thanks to those Soldiers that have served their country prior to us going to Iraq. All veterans deserve a hand shake and a Thank You for serving our country. Cody Wentz, James Holmes, Phil Brown, and Lance Koenig are heros in my mind, and my heart. They have given their lives so we can continue to live in freedom. I offer my sincere condolences to the Wentz family. I will never forget Cody and what he has done for his country.

Cody was part of something bigger than himself, and although he made the ultimate sacrifice, he will truly be missed. It saddens me to see someone like cody with many friends and family to be gone from us. To the Family and friends of Cody: Know that he will never be forgotten. Thank him every day for his courage and devotion to the Guard and everyone.

Mr. & Mrs. Wentz,

I did not know your son but wanted to extend my gratitude and appreciation to you and your son for serving our country. I am a civilian and I work for the guard and my husband is a member of the guard and we both want you to know how much it means to us what you and your son sacrificed for us. He is a true hero and will never be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Angie Lowe
