Sean Michael Cooley, born April 18, 1969, was killed in action on February 3, 2005, while serving in Iraq.
A member of the Army National Guard's 150th Combat Engineer Battalion from Lucedale, he was a proud member of the military. He served his country for 14 years. When not on active duty, he worked as a registered nurse at Singing River Hospital.
He will always be remembered as a kind, compassionate man full of life. He was a very hard worker, loved by all who knew him. He will be sadly missed by family, friends, and co-workers. Sean enhanced the lives of all who knew him.

He is also survived by Laura's parents, Mike and Pat Kehoe, and Laura's sister, Jennifer and husband, Jerry Miller.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Mary Pazos.

On Saturday, February 12, 2005, there will be a 2 PM church service at Antioch Methodist Church in Lucedale, MS., where friends may call from 11 AM - 2 PM . Burial will be in O'Neal Cemetery in Benndale, MS.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers donations be made to ones' favorite local charity or to any Century Bank in Moss Point, Vancleave, Hurley or Lucedale where a fund in honor of Sean Michael Cooley has been set up.

To Sean's family: He may be gone, but he is surely not forgotten. I thank you and him for his sacrifice. He is a true hero that I can point out to my children. It's hard to believe that it has been 4 years. I still keep expecting him to tap me on the shoulder at the annual Christmas parade. He is greatly missed. And the poem written by his aunt is beautiful.

May 24, 2009
On this Memorial Day weekend, we, Sean's Mother and Father, would like to share a poem Sean's Aunt Lenora wrote in memory of him.
FREEDOM HAS A FACE FOR ME
Freedom has a face for me
And no one shall ever erase;
The somber look of a valiant man
Now one of an immortal race.
No longer will I think or muse
Of a former patriot's dream
Who heralded an illustrious way
Where men could all be free.
Soon brother against brother
Exacted a terrible price;
And it seemed that freedom's eternal flame
Would soon fail to give it's light.
On distant shores, white crosses mark
Gallant soldiers who gave their lives
So that peaceful shores would here remain
Free of terror, fear, and strife.
The price of freedom has always been
A great, exacting toll,
A father's burden, a mother's grief,
Great sorrow to us all.
Now, forever I shall clearly see
Freedom's torch with each new dawn
Yes, freedom has a face, for me,
Our dearest, beloved Sean.
In loving memory of Sean Michael Cooley.
While your loss is immeasurable, your life and our memory of you is a priceless gift.
Thank you Lenora for memorializing Sean in such a special way. Love, Kathy

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Laura,
We have not met, but I look forward to doing so. By reading everyone's personal experiences with your husband, it is easy to see that your husband was a loving person, caring friend, outstanding leader, brave soldier, and wonderful human being. I couldn't agree more and I am truly a better person myself for knowing and serving with your husband. I joined Bravo Company on October 27th at Camp Shelby and from the day I met SFC Cooley I knew he was a great person to have on my side. No matter what he was doing, he always had a smile on his face. The soldiers under your husband looked up to him as did his peers. I know I did. If there was anything he could do for another, he would, no matter what. I only knew him for a short time, but it didn't take long to gain a huge amount of respect for him. I know it must be hard for you at this time, but please know that you are in the prayers of many and the memories that your husband gave to us all will never be forgotten.

Psalm 23
1
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2
He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,
3
He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!
My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

I know we speak often but today i felt the need to express something more. I haverecently had the pleasure of attending my family reunion wish we hadnt had one in about twenty years, and I could not help but to think of all the fallen soldiers who have paid the ultimate price for us to be able to enjoy our freedom today, undoughtly Sean paid that price for us on Feb 3, 2005, there are no words that I can express to ease your pain , but know this that my heart feels the same pain everytime we loose a fallen brother in Arms. My Prayers are contiunally going out to the many families of the fallen SOLDIERS. GOD BLESS YOU ALL. I love you guys

Today is Memorial Day. I just wanted to let Sean's family know that he is remembered--and will be for years to come. I worked with Sean at GCH. He was an excellent nurse. He would always play around and pull jokes on co-workers, but when a patient came through the door he was all business. All of the patients loved him. He really made a difference--in life and in death. He will always be a hero. Aron, Stephanie, Claire, and Braden.

Sean was my best friend. I knew him for nearly thiry of his 35 years. I am honored to have been his friend, and although I moved from Mississippi 15 years ago, I still kept in touch. Yesterday, on a rainy, windy day here in Portland, Oregon, I had the honor of carrying a placard bearing Sean M. Cooley's name and picture in a solemn march through our city. The purpose of this march was to give homage to all 1500 soldiers who have lost their lives in Irag. I feel great sympathy for you over your loss and how unfair life can be. Having read the clippings on the internet, I can see what a very special person he was. It's my hope these few words will be of some comfort to you.

I am SFC A. Lee Oswalt, Jr. I was in the unit with Sean and was unable to deploy due to spinal surgery. I liked and respected Sean and am extremely glad to have known him for the short time I was with him.
I want to express my sorrow over Sean's departure from this world, but I understand that he was a Christian and although it does not remove the pain and suffering you must be going through, it should comfort you somewhat knowing that he is in such a better place that it defies description.

I work at the State Headquarters for the MS Army National Guard in Jackson. Sean's passing has hit hard the hearts of even those here, hours away from his home, those that never knew him. He has served his country, his state and we remember him for this great gift he gave. He was a fine soldier, friend, and nurse. I was a member of the Lucedale National Guard Unit during Desert Storm, and was married to Michael Parker of Basin. While I was a resident there, Sean helped save my own daughter's life one night in the George County ER. And again, he assisted in saving my own life there too. I will never forget Sean or the legacy he leaves behind.

I was heartbroken to hear the news about Sean. I met him at the National Guard in Lucedale, that was my first guard unit, I am now in the 114th ASG in Hattiesburg, we recently returned from a 10 month rotation in Kuwait, when I heard that the Lucedale unit had been alerted my heart and prayers went out to the unit. I knew that the type unit they were that they would not be as blessed as my unit was by being in Kuwait. I know that Sean was willing to give his life for his Country and for the freedom of others not as fortunate as the USA. Sean was a loving and giving person and not only my life is better for having known him but my children lives were touched as well. God Bless you and comfort you in your loss. To the Family of Sean Micheal Cooley will be missed in many facets in his walks of life. I remember Sean as a Hero in Nursing School who succeeded with great strides and always had a smile of joy each day. I am so honored to be his Pediatric Instructor that made a difference in Sean's life to reflect his love for caring for children who needed his love and care. I am so proud of his bravery to protect our country for our freedom and safety. I am so heart-broken over the loss of an excellent ER nurse and the 150th Infantry member who was called to go to Iraq where he lost his life. My heartfelt prayers will be with the Cooley Family as time goes by. Sean was loved by many people he touched. I can say that Sean was my nurse in the ER on several occasions and he entered my room with a smile and we joked about nursing school.

I worked with Sean at George County Hospital. He was a great nurse, always willing to lend a helping hand. He was always friendly and cheerful and made work just a little more fun. He gave 110% to everything he did. He will be missed greatly by all of us at GCH.

I just wanted to express my heart felt sympathy and sadness for your loss. Sean and I graduated from George County together. Sean was always the sweetest, kindest, sincerest person. No matter where you saw him, he always spoke and had a smile for you. I haven't seen Sean in a long time, but I will always remember his laugh and his smile. His passing is a great loss to his family, the community and our country. He paid the ultimate price for our freedom. For that he will always be a HERO in my eyes.

I have never met your family, but my husband is serving with the 2-114 HHB 155 BCT in Iraq. He told me that he met your husband while they were stationed in Hattiesburg the last several months, and that he was a great soldier and man. My heart goes out to you during these difficult times. Your husband/son has made the ultimate sacrifice for us all. My prayers are with you as you face the hard days ahead. Please contact me if there is anything that I can do for your family or if there is anything that our FSG can assist you with.
