Dear Smith Family,
I wanted to reach out to you because my son is playing in a baseball tournament this Memorial Day weekend in Cincinnati. Each team member will be wearing a jersey, bearing the name of a fallen soldier. My son's jersey names Lance Corporal Kevin Scott Smith. We want you to know that his sacrifice will not be forgotten, and we will be honoring him this weekend.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Smith Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to troops in Afghanistan this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Kevin S. Smith US Marine Lance Corporal. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.

Please know that just as your loved one will remain in your hearts and minds forever, his sacrifice, and that of your family, remains with the people he died defending. To the family of Kevin...I still have his picture and I still think about and pray for you guys often. Lauri and Nick Luciano still speak of you and my son Cpl. Richard Smith still keeps Kevin in his heart. During this time I want you to know that my heart goes out to you and I know words really can't make a difference, but you're in my thoughts and prayers this Christmas season. May the Lord just cover you in his protective love and may you still enjoy your Christmas even with the great loss of Kevin. May God Bless you all.

I was back home in Springfield on this hot summer day, and stopped by Kevin`s grave in Vale Cemetery, to pay my respects.

Kevin is not forgotten; certainly not by those of us in the U.S. military. I saw two USMC flags on Upper Valley Pike, and thought of theirs and Kevin`s service.

With appreciation.

Kevin is one of the absolute best friends I ever had if not the best.We were like brothers having been very close friends from ages six to twenty years young. His death in Iraq put an end to our friendship here on earth, but I know it will be picked back up again when I meet him again in Heaven!I will never not be proud of Kevin as a Marine, but I have to be honest and say I am much more proud to forever call him my best friend and brother and am extremely proud of the human being he was.I miss him so much!Sometimes I feel like if I miss him hard enough he'll come back but I have to do what I know Kevin would want me to do and thats live life like he did.To its fullest.Kevin and I's version of "living life to its fullest"was laughing, making others laugh, enjoying one anothers company, and living to succed at something great.Kevin certainly did that,I hope I can live up to his sacrifice.I can't wait to see my brother again,an extremly incredible friend that I miss deeply.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Kathy:

May you know from another MOM that I think of you often. I still have Kevin's picture hung right there with Ricks. (Lcpl. Richard A. Smith II) I thank God daily for the gift that I still have and I pray for you because you no longer have yours. I know from listening to Nick (luciano), Lauri (my daughter, his wife), Rick, and all the other young Marines that Kevin was a light in an otherwise dark world for them. His memory still lives on in their hearts. No words can heal the pain. I'm so sorry. May the Lord continue to bless and keep you and your family safe in his arms.

To the Smith Family,
Kevin will always be remembered by all of us. Your sacrifice is so great! There are no words that will really convey to you just how I feel about the loss of Kevin and all the others who gave their life for this cause. I know God has made a special place for them and we will all see them again someday. In the meantime, we live with an emptiness in our hearts. As you probably know, my great nephew Matt Maupin is still captured/missing in Iraq. His grandfather (my brother) passed away last month. He now knows where Matt is hidden away by the enemy. I have a CD for you of the song "Here's to the Heroes." If you will contact me using the e-mail address, I will get it to you.

To Kevin's family,

I just want you to know that I have thought of you all often and you'll never be forgotten. Kevin will not be forgotten, either. I see his name every time I go into IGA and I see his picture every time I open my study Bible. Sometimes I just think of you all out of the blue. May God continue to comfort all of you. I will get you a copy of the song, "Here's To The Heroes." It was sung by a man from Greece, at an event sponsored by the Yellow Ribbon Support Center on April 9 of this year. That was the second anniversary of the awful day when Matt was taken captive.

May 23, 2006

It was about a year ago that I brought to Kevin's former high school principal at Kenton Ridge the respectful photographs of Kevin's casket taken by the groundskeeper at Vale Cemetery.

Family, what I know that you don't know is that the groundskeeper-- who wanted you to have these four or five photographs, was that he was--as he related to me on the day that he saw me in an Air Force blues uniform, and I guess, felt safe, to approach me, and give me these photographs, as I laid a memorial at Kevin's graveside--that the groundskeeper was a naturalized Dutch immigrant to the U.S.

He explained to me on that day that he'd been raised in Hollland during the Nazi occupation of World War 2, and that'd he'd lost family members during that time. It turns out that this fine man wanted to join the U.S. Marines--just like Kevin, and the Marines--and immigrate to the U.S., to thank his American liberators. From what this elderly man told me, as tears flowed down his cheeks, he wanted to let you know that a fellow Marine is watching over Kevin, and that all his children--ALL Americans, had served in the U.S. military.

I forgot to share this with you.

Kevin is not forgotten.

I come from a family of Marines, although, I think, my Marine brothers in my family, cannot explain how I joined the Air Force. I try to remind my brothers that God surely loves airmen, too. (Smile.)

You always remain in my prayers.

Reading in the paper how Kenton Ridge has honored your son's memory shows you how much everyone cares and how honored Northeastern School district is to have a young man like Kevin graduate from the district. To the family of a hero. My deepest sympathy for the pain you must be going through day in and day out. It isn't easy carrying this pain and nothing we can say will make it better. I just wanted you to know that designing a quilt to honor your son is truly an honor for me and as I work on each block I seem to shed my tears also for it seem I get to know more about this great young man that believed in his country and care enough to do something about it. God bless you for giving this country a hero someone that this country will honor and respect for all he and his family did for this country.

Today a year ago my life changed forever. Just like I presume the lives of everyone that had the honor of knowing Kevin. I firmly believe he looked out for the rest of us until we all made it home. Not a day goes by that I don't think about him. I will never forget the ultimate sacrifice he made for us. Let's not forget his Toyota Celica either. This is another note from me to let you know Kevin is not forgotten. His memory will live on in all our thoughts. Christmas must have been especially difficult for you and my heart goes out to you. We are in limbo concerning Matt, but God is there with us as He is there with you in the absence of Kevin. God is also with Matt's brother, Micah, who is recovering from multiple injuries including a broken neck from a motorcycle accident 11 days ago. Keith and Carolyn were there with him through the first several days after the accident and they returned home on Christmas Day. He is healing so well that he was sent to his barracks on the fourth day after the accident. God surely can do amazing things sometimes through medical workers. Micah will most likely be able to stay on active duty in the Marines. I'm sure you will be hearing from his parents as they have a heart for military families. God bless all of you!

As Mike has, I've written before but with the holiday season, I just wanted to send my prayers to you guys. Kathy...I am so glad my son, Rick Smith II called me and let me talk to you when you were at Camp Lejeune. I hope your visit there was as meaningful as the boys felt it was. My almost son in Law and daughter, Lauri and Nick told me you guys were wonderful. I truly hope your visit was rewarding in and of itself. This was the first Christmas that I didn't get to see my son Rick. Not that anything so detrimental has happened in our lives as has yours, (he couldn't leave base) but my thoughts went out to you knowing that you will never have Kevin for Christmas again. I can't imagine your pain, nor will I pretend to. I can only offer my prayers, thoughts, and support. May the Lord bless you and keep you high in his heart. You are in my prayers that the Lord will continue to allow you the presense of mind to go on living daily and grow stronger everyday. I know the rest of the family misses him also and I pray for them daily too. But, I can somewhat relate as I am a MOM too. God bless you and your family.

I wanted to thank him for believing in a cause most of us tend to take for granted, and thank you for fighting and defending our country. In my eyes he isn't just another person he is a Hero. I ask god to comfort you, give you strength, and bring you better day's. They say that "WHAT THE CATERPILLAR CALLS THE END OF THE WORLD THE MAKER CALLS A BUTTERFLY" I believe that your son will make a great "butterfly" and will continue to serve his country by protecting those still fighting for the cause he believed so much in freedom.

Our prayers go out to you. Kevin served his country well and his passing is not in vain. The Lord has a purpose and reason for everything. While we did not know Kevin, we share in your loss. Our son Dustin is also serving in Iraq with the 3-25 Marines. May God protect all who serve and console the families of the fallen warriors. You remain in our prayers. Bob and Marla

I followed the news about your son as if I knew him, but I did not. I know no words can help you through the pain and anger you may feel. He served his country and lived for it and for that he will forever be with his maker. May God bless your son and entire family

I only had the pleasure of knowing Kevin for a short time. He was a great guy with an easy smile always ready. I am so sorry for your loss, all of us who knew him are praying for your family. Many of our friends who went to Iraq with him have called home and expressed their sorrow and regret. God be with you.

To the family of Kevin Smith, This is yet a third entry to keep in touch. We have a common bond in the impact this Iraq situation has had on our families. Thanks again for all your prayers for Matt and thanks for your promise to come by and see me. I promised that you would know my house by the POW flag. That landmark is temporarily gone thanks to the storm here last night. It will be put back up in the near future. In the meantime, please send me an e-mail when you have time and I will give you my address and phone number. May God continue to comfort you as only He can.

Although I didn't know Kevin, I feel as though I did. As I've driven to work each day this week I see the flags going down the road to your home. Sometimes I get discourage wondering if the time I spent in the service was worth it when I see others getting ahead in civilian life. The military is a tougher life than some realize but leaving your family and friends, doing jobs no one else would do Is worth it. Your son made the ultimate sacrifice - far more than most of us are asked to offer. Our community of Northridge is a very loving community and our young people are the best. I've been fortunate enough to share Kevin's experience of growing up here, graduating from KR (81) and serving my country (22years). Your son is the true definition of a Hero giving his life for us to have the freedom to enjoy this kind of community and life. I think sometimes we take this for granted and forget the sacrifices made by our young military people. Reading some of the comments from his friends - its obvious that Kevin was an inspiration to his family and friends. He has touched many lifes. Your family, friends and our community are in our prayers. God Bless you for the sacrifice YOUR family made for our freedoms.

I am Kevin's Company First Sergeant. It is difficult to express the loss the men and I share here in Iraq. We bite back tears and mourn quietly in dark corners as we focus on the task at hand. We live for the day that we can grieve with you and try to give back to you all that Kevin has blessed us with. He lives in us, and our lives are forever touched and changed because of him.

I am honored to have known him.
