To the family of Sgt. Bryan J.Opskar:

As you may know, the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation has honored your loved one at its Memorial Day Sunday worship service (each year in May) … since the time of your fallen hero's ultimate sacrifice. We will continue to pay tribute to our nation's veterans … lest we ever forget!

Now we would like to honor you … as the next-of-kin … who have also paid a great price on the altar of liberty. On Sunday 29 September at 11:00 a.m. we will host a Gold Star Family Sunday.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship … as we pay tribute to your sacrifice. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain (Colonel-Retired) Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “By Dying, We Live.” The special music will be the husband/wife vocal/piano — Wickman Duo. Following the worship experience, your family is invited to attend a social time in our Fellowship Hall … with some light refreshments.

As this historic chapel has limited seating, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

To the family of Sgt. Bryan J. Opskar:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.

Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Dear Family;
Project Compassion is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Artist, founder and President; Kaziah Hancock will be coming to Minnesota in a few months, approximately March 2010. She has been asked by one of your local media agencies to attend an event to honor our Country and the State of Minnesota’s fallen soldiers/heroes. We would be truly honored for the opportunity to paint a portrait of your hero to present it to you and your family. If you have already received a portrait of your hero from us, please keep in mind that we have been approved by our sponsors to paint a second portrait of each soldier as long as it is requested in behalf of the heroes Mother, Father and/or spouse. We only paint these 100% free to the families because of our sponsors. Please visit www.heropaintings.com or contact me directly at [email protected]. We would be truly honored to have a chance to learn more about each of these fine soldiers, our modern day heroes!
Very sincerely,

Rest in peace, Opskar. We didn't chum around much at Concordia; y'know, that whole uneasy truce hockey players and football players kept around each other. That seems so insignificant now. You are the first colleague I have lost in wartime; the Iraq and Afghan war is now no longer an abstraction. I hope you will be the last. Godspeed.

To the family of Sgt Bryan Opskar.
I discovered the tragic story of your son on the web today. I am a Princeton native, class of '87. My sister Amy was in Bryan's class. My mother and many family members continue to live in Princeton today.
I have been serving the U.S. Navy and our great country my entire adult life. I have also served both on the ground and in the sky's over Afghanistan and Iraq. It strikes hard when there is a common thread, like the same hometown and same mission, even though I did not know Bryan. I'm so proud of the fact that a fellow Minnesotan and Princeton man and has served our county. I am however extremely saddened and sorry that he has paid the ultimate sacrifice. I truly believe his death was not in vain. I believe we are doing the right things over there and myself feel extremely rewarded having served for the freedom of a struggling nation.
Be proud of your son always. Be proud that he served for the greater good of others, I am!
With my deepest condolences.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Bryan, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

You both are my heros!!!!

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Father we entrust our brother Bryan to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Bryan in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.

To the family of Sgt. Bryan J. Opskar:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 27 May, 2007. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “Remembering” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org

To Bryan:
On 9/11, we honor and pray for all those who serve our country and have dedicated their lives. We also pray for their families and loved ones. We sing about God loving them and caring for them, as we know their road will be long. This 9/11, our class also sang a song for Miss Leanda. It's a ballad of how glorious it will be she gets to see you again in heaven. We know that she misses you very much.

Here it is...Bryan's Song
and it's called "Coming Home In Style"

Will you be there to greet me?
Open arms and a smile?
At heaven's door I know completely
Our time apart was a short while.

Your love will carry me
My dreams will prepare me
My faith will spare me
Coming home, coming home,
In style.

Will you be there to show me?
All the ropes, all the ways?
At heaven's door I know completely
Your love is here to stay.

Your love will carry me
My dreams will prepare me
My faith will spare me
Coming home, coming home,
In style.

Will you be there to hold me?
To make up for lost time?
At heaven's door I know completely
Our love is divine.

Your love will carry me
My dreams will prepare me
My faith will spare me
Coming home, coming home,
In style.

Our prayers are with you, Leandra, and your loved ones.

Bryan,

I think of you often, as do Allen and Rudy. You were and are such a big part of who they have grown up to be. Allen, Rudy and myself are better people for having had you in our lives. As we have had to say good bye to you a year ago and we all remember that as each day goes by, especially now a year later. I thank you for giving to all of us the greatest gift of all your life. In this year I have watched my son's become closer and become better people all because of the special pearson that you were in their lives. I see a part of you in them every time I see and hug my sons.

As your Aunt I know and will always remember the day at the lake when I told you that you had let the best fish in the sea get away. I am so glad that you made me wrong and married the love of you life - Leandra Dougherty.

I am so proud to say that my nephew is and was an honorable solider and an Opskar. You exemplifed the words Duty, Honor and Loyalty as a soldier, a man and a good friend. You were what you loved being A Proud Marine. Thank You for being our families HERO. Thank You for doing what only a few others have needed to do; you have given the greatest gift of all your life.

Watch down on my brother Erling and Betty your mother and father and give them a hug when they need it. They did such a good job raising you. You had good parents who loved you and are so proud of you. Your brother Christopher and sister-in-law Rebecca have given you a wonderful nephew. Ryder James will grow up hearing many stories about you. Rudy and Allen will make certain of that. You will touch Ryder's life in many ways! Leandra is part of our lives thank you for bringing such a wonderful person into our family. We all love her!

Give my mother and brothers a hug for me and tell them that I love them.

GOD BLESS and SEMPER FI

Love,

Aunt Emmy

Hi Bryan,

Wow, it has been a year already. It is still hard to really believe what happened. That first month was a complete blur, too many things going on at once. The rest of the months seem to have passed, but I'm not sure we all remember much of it through the fog.

We have been trying to keep track of Leandra for you, but you know how that goes -- she should be the "Carpe Diem" poster girl! We are proud of your wife for how she has handled this last year. I think she impressed a lot of people with her strength and grace.

We miss you and think of you often. We experience little moments every now and then -- a song, a smile, a jarhead -- that remind us you are always with us. Keep it up, we always enjoy them.

We are approaching the 1 year anniversary of Bryan's death. (July 23rd) This past year has been quite an emotional process and Leandra has remained so strong through it all. Not a week goes by that Bryan doesn't remind his loved ones that his spirit remains. We all enjoy these quick visits & signs from him that everything will be o.k. Bryan is a beautiful, talented, brave person who was taken too soon.

Bryan,

Every mtime I go fishing I think of you. I will not ever forget the good times we had over the years. Marrying my wife opened the door to becoming part of yours. You were first my employee, my friend, and now you will always be my hero. You are now watching over all of us and when I was very ill last July I felt you were there with me. I will never forget you. As we approach this time of the year my heart is very heavy. To Erling,Betty,Chris and Leandra, I am thinking of you often. We all know what kind of man Bryan was and that will keep us strong through our tough times in life.
