Robert Martens Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 11, 2005.
Robert Nathaniel "Nathan" Martens 20, of Queen Creek, Arizona. Beloved Son, Husband and Father lost his life just after midnight on September 6, 2005. Nathan, a Navy Corpsman assigned to II Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, N.C., was on a night patrol at the time in Al Qaim, Iraq where he was proudly serving his country. Though Nathan's time here was short, his impact on others and lessons taught will live on forever. Nathan set an example for both young and old to follow. With his mission here complete, Nathan can now return to sit at the right hand of God. Nathan will be missed for now and loved forever by those he leaves behind. Wife Erin, 10 month old daughter Riley Jo, Mother Maria, Father Rob, Sister Bobbie Ann and Brother Matthew, along with many other family members and friends. We trust that God will continue to watch over us all with Nathan's help until we meet again. Nathan, we look forward to when we hook up again to party at God's house. Services will be held at 10:00 am, Wednesday, September 14, 2005 at Central Christian Church of the East Valley located in Mesa Arizona at 933 N. Lindsay Rd. (Brown & Lindsay Rds.) 480-924-4946 Internment at City of Mesa Cemetery (Brown & Center Rds.) following the service. A gathering will be held back at Central Christian Church, in the Higher Grounds Café following the interment. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations may be made to the trust fund account in the name of Riley Jo Martens at any M & I Bank. Sign the Guest Book at eastvalleytribune.com

Memorial day is a very special day for Military members like you that made the ultimate sacrifice. I think of you so very often Doc and remember that night patrol oh so well and I will never forget it. I think of you every memorial day, every veterans day, every September 6th and almost every day in between. It was an honor and privilege to serve by your side and to call you friend. I miss you doc I can only hope that your family is doing well. My thought are with them every time I think of you. Everyone has their day but I feel yours was too soon..... To lose such an amazing person so young and full of joy and determination is a difficult and heart wrenching thing. You always cheered up 1st platoon with your positive attitude and infectious smile. Thank you for making my life and our platoons life better at that time in our lives. Also thank you for being the best damn Corpsman any Marine Infantry unit would be proud to have. Gone but never forgotten. God speed Nate!

You were so young and so much life in you. God must have wanted you in his heavenly choir sooner than you were ready to go. I am a Gold Star Wife and I have been since 1970, when my husband was called too soon to be in the heavenly choir too
I can say it only gets better with time. God be with you now and the difficult days to come. Go to "Grief Share" a program designed for any of the problems you have adjusting to your new life. You will find them in many churches, you can look on-line for then as well.

Nate and I met in Hospital Corps school and became close friends. In the short time that I knew him, I came to know that Nate was one of the "good guys". He was an honorable young man who loved his family and would have done anything for them. The love he had for his wife and new daughter were unmistakable. Nate was the first friend that I lost in the military and his sacrifice will never be forgotten. I think of him often and I pray for your family on a regular basis. Your family dominates my prayers every September. I have wanted to make contact before but have been at a complete loss for words since the phone call that I received from Nate's dad, letting me know of his death. I know you all have been through some difficult times, but I pray that the void in your hearts be filled with the peace of God.

To Roberts mom, I recieved this email regarding your son, and the more I read, the more I could relate to you. He lived so close to me. and my son passed Sept 13th, so close to Roberts passing, only almost 7 years ago. Time does not heal all wounds, but in some ways it gets easier if you remind yourself that he is at peace with God. and if your blessed, God will remind you. your son may come to you in your dreams and smile at you for the longest time, like mine did, and you know that he is ok. Your son is a hero, and always has been to his mom, but now, the whole world knows. God Bless his family. Guard the gates of heaven with your brothers and sisters, Robert. Nathan,
It truly saddens me to have not been able to meet the wonderful, sacrificing man that Rob and Maria raised you to be. They speak so highly of you and I really wish I could have met a true American hero. I look forward to the day we get to meet for the first time and when you are reunited with your loving family. I am very blessed and proud to not only be a Martens, but to be your new sister.
Thank you for your sacrifice to allow us to live our lives of freedom,

Nathan, your dad and I miss you so much it's hard to look back on the days and see so many have gone by without you. I heard Kenny Chesney's new song and it immediately made me think of you. Oh how I remember those days and how you looked forward to playing football. I remember you saying you wished they would let you stay in school one more year just to play ball. But Coach told you, you had to graduate and move on. I remember those days proudly son and will forever be grateful of all the time that we had together. Thank you for being a wonderful, outstanding and awesome son.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Robert, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To All Parents
“I’ll lend you for a little time a child of Mine,” He said.
“For you to love the While he lives and mourn for when he’s dead.
It may be six or seven years, or 22 or three,
But will you, till I call him back, take care of him for me?
He’ll bring his charms to gladden you, and shall his stay be brief.
You’ll have his lovely memories as solace and relief.
“I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return,
But there are some lessons taught down there I want this child to learn.
I’ve looked the wide world over in my search for teachers true
And from the throngs that crowd life’s lanes I have selected you.
Now will you give him all your love, nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate Me when I come to take him back again?”
For all the joy Thy child shall bring, the risk of grief we’ll run.
We’ll shelter him with tenderness, we’ll love him while we may
And for the happiness we’ve known forever grateful stay;
But shall the angels call for him much sooner than we’ve planned.
We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand.”

In time, there will come a day when the tears of sorrow will softly flow into sighs of remembrance. Your heart will begin to heal itself.

Grieving will be interrupted by episodes of joy; and you will hear the whisper of hope.

There will come a day when you will welcome the pangs of remembrance as a sun shower of the soul; a turning of the tide; the promise of peace.

There will come a day when you will risk loving, go on believing,

and treasure the remembering.

My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young man who gave his life so selflessly.

I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. What a handsome and stalwart looking youngman. And his face is so bright and filled with a smile that charms. Robert was the same age as my oldest is now. In fact two of my sons are in Marine Corps Boot Camp right now. Tradition is built one soul at a time and those that follow in the brave footsteps of Robert have a heritage that Robert has set down in his turn that my sons have responsibilities to uphold. Erin, Riley, Rob, Maria, Bobbie and Matthew,

As I sit here in front of the computer at the 11th hour of this guest book wanting to say the right thing, I am overcome with such pain and sorrow at your loss, at my loss, that it is difficult to express my feelings. I would never begin to think that I could know the depth of your pain. I do know that my life has been blessed and is better for having the opportunity to know Nathan. Erin, I am so proud that you chose Nathan and am honored that Nathan chose Erin. A man that was respectful, responsible, loving and fun loving! He was the son to me that I never had. His playful ways were a joy. I still hear him yell out "Hey Ole Jeffer" with a grin and a giggle. It was obvious to all what was most important to him, Erin and their beautiful daughter Riley Jo! The love that he showed for them was an incredible thing to witness and be a part of. Rob and Maria, I thank you for raising such a wonderful young man. I am a better man for having him in my life. Our families have been united forever through Nathan. I am honored by that and here for all of you if you ever need anything.

We need to continue to love on each other and can look forward to when we "hook up" with Nathan to party at God's house.

Nathan, I will do my best with your "girls".

Love, Ole Jeffer

Erin and Riley Jo,

There are no words I can say to even come close to making you feel better. You have lost an amazing husband and father. Although I did not have the honor of really getting to know Nathan, I feel honored to have had the chance to have even met him. I have only heard amazing things about Nathan, and I hope the two of you know how lucky you are to have had someone like him in your lives, and I know that he was just as lucky to have had you, Erin, and Riley Jo in his life.

Erin, again, I am so sorry for what you are going through. Nathan is an American Hero and he makes us all proud to be Americans.

Love,

Erin, Riley Jo and the Martens family: We are so sorry for your loss. What an American hero Nathan is. We want to thank you for his sacrifice. We only met him briefly at the wedding reception, but we were instantly impressed with him. We could tell how much he loved his entire family. You were all very lucky to have him in your lives. The pictures that you have of him and Riley Jo will show her how much he loved her, because the love comes through the pictures. All of you will continue to be in our prayers.

Erin & Riley Jo: You both mean so very much to us and words can't express how much our hearts are breaking for all of you. We only knew Nathan for a short time, but what a guy! You are the luckiest girls in the world to have had him as a Friend, Husband and Daddy, and there was no doubt he felt the same about his two special girls. We love you and just know that you are always in our thoughts and prayers.

To my dear sister and baby neice Riley Jo,

I am truly honored to have known Nathan for the amount of time I did. Nathan was the kind of person when you met you felt like you had known him forever. He was always willing to give me a helping hand on anything I needed. I am so proud to have him as a brother in law, and father to my baby neice Riley Jo. I will not let a day go by that I won't let Riley Jo know what a hero and great dad her father was. Thankyou Lord for bringing Nathan into our lives and making us all better people!

I LOVE YOU ALWAYS SISTER!!

To my precious daughter Erin and sweet, sweet grandaughter Riley Jo:

I never knew it was possible to hurt so bad. My heart is aching for both of you for the loss of your loving and perfect husband and daddy. Nathan was an angel sent from God; that is more clear with each passing day. His life here on earth was short but so powerful. He enriched everyone that crossed his path with his big heart and sweet and gentle spirit. His sense of humor and big smile were unmeasurable. Rob and Maria, my heart goes out to you for the incredible void that losing Nathan has left you but what an incredible job you did to raise him in a Godly home. Nathan was much more than a son-in-law to me; I loved him as my own son. It is so hard to imagine our lives without him in it. How sad for the people who never knew him. I will take care of your "girls" Nathan...until we meet again.

love, Mom

Even though we have never met, I wanted to share a poem with you.
You see I lost my only son when he was one month away from his 22nd birthday. That was in 1980. I know the pain and the sorrow that you feel.
I know in time the awful hurting inside of you will heal. I know right now it’s hard to Imagine that life can even go on. I can’t imagine anything worse then losing a child.

I am a Christian and I know that God’s strength saw me and my husband through. There were many days we just didn’t want to go on, but He was always there to help us.

I hope you will not take offence by receiving this. I only mean it to help and
let you know that I care. I will keep you in my prayers.

May God bless you in a very special way, as He took a very special person from this world to be with Him. I thank God every day for men like your son who are willing to fight for our freedom and the freedom of oppressed nations. I know Robert has made a difference in every life he has touched. God bless everyone in his family.

Remember, John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should nor perish but have everlasting life.”

At Death of a Child
“I’ll lend you for a little while
A child of mine,” He said.
“For you to love the while he lives
And mourn when he is dead.
It may be six or seven years, or
Twenty two or three,
But will you ’til I call him back,
Take care of him for Me?
He’ll bring his charms to gladden you,
And should his days be brief,
You’ll have his lovely memories
As solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay,
Since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught down there
I want this child to learn.
I’ve looked this wide world over
In my search for teachers true,
And from the throngs that crowd life’s lane,
I have selected you.
Now will you give all your love,
Nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate me when I come to call
To take him back again?”

I fancy that I heard them say,
“Dear Lord, Thy will be done.
For all the joy this child shall bring,
The risk of grief we’ll run;
We’ll shelter him with tenderness,
We’ll love him while we may,
And for the happiness we’ve known
Forever grateful stay.
But should the angels call for him,
Much sooner then we’ve planned,
We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes
And try to understand.”

What an awesome smile! You can see the light of God's love in his face, his face shines!! Thank you Robert, for paying the ultimate price for the freedom my family and I enjoy. We are a Military family and understand the pain that comes when our Hero becomes a Fallen Hero!

To Roberts Family, please know that God loves you and will never forsake you, He knows the pain in your hearts and will go with you, one day at a time. May the Lord give you the strength for the coming days, weeks and months ahead.

To the family of Navy Corpsman Robert N. Martens.

I know you have no idea who I am but my son, Navy Corpsman Adrian Evans had gotten to know Robert and they became close friends. Adrian called me the other day from Iraq and gave me the news of a close friend that he had lost. He told me of how close they had become and how they were making plans to stay intouch after they got home. He also has a wife, Samantha, and a 9 mo old son, Landon. I just wanted to let you know of the loss that Adrian feels and how his heart and mine go out to you and your family. Adrian described their friendship as being brothers. Losing Robert is a difficult thing for Adrian and completing thier mission without him is going to be one of the most difficult things he will endure. Please feel our deepest sympathy and hear our prayers.

I was very sad to hear about Nathan's death. I was one of his teachers at Queen Creek High School his senior year. All of my students there affected me greatly and I remember all of them often. We wish his family all the best and want you to know that God will be with you.

We are so sorry for your loss. Nathan loved his family very much. When we had talked to him, he shared how much Erin and Riley meant to him. Nathan will forever be a hero, who was trying to ensure that all nations are allowed the freedoms that we take for granted.

All of you will be in our prayers and thoughts.
