Georgia-based soldier killed

An Alaska man serving with the Georgia-based 3rd Infantry Division in Iraq died Sunday after his convoy hit a roadside bomb in Tikrit, the U.S. Army said Wednesday.

It's very hard still to talk or even say your name without crying or SSG Moore. He wanted so badly as soon
To go back as he was on at Fort Stewart for his R&R when it happened. I found out by one of the other wives as they were letting everyone know.
I still remember how I met you it was so funny. SSG Moore and I had only been dating for 3 weeks you ran to the truck jump on the window of our truck and asked me out. That was funny.i have so many amazing memories of you. Eating pancakes at our home. Unfortunately I lost SSG Moore as well and it also has been really hard. You are both so thought of. Thanks for giving me the chance of meeting such wonderful people. Love you both

It has come and gone again, September 11. I was lucky enough to spend it at a soccer tournament, one I had never been at before and I of course thought of our times at tournaments in Anchorage and Fairbanks. The team I was coaching took second, like we so often did. I miss you brother and I hope you are living it up, up above.

I sometimes find myself wondering why you were taken away and not me. It just doesn't seem fair. You were a wonderful person, loved by all that you came across. I wouldn't let them treat me until I knew you were taken care of first. The pain was excruciating, but I didn't care. You needed them more than me. I hope that by me given the chance to live that I can live my life like you would have. Full of energy, honest, caring, loving to my family and friends. I know you are well taken care of up there and I will be thinking and honoring you for the rest of my life until we meet again.

As tomorrow approaches the 10th Anniversary of 9/11/01, I remember where I was when I found out Kurt was killed on 9/11/05. I served two tours in Iraq with Kurt, and I remember how hard it was to be there at his memorial service in Iraq. 9/11 changed all of our lives, but for those of us who knew Kurt it means a little something different.

I dreamt of you again last night like I have done many nights. It was so real that it leaves me crying in front of the computer screen thinking about it. I will never forget. I do now and will always have the same picture that is next to his name , hanging in my living room. It reminds me to remember the price my fellow soldier paid. I will always hold his memory dear to my heart. Like many who knew him, 9/11 is even more significant with such loss of good person. Even as a I write this now,I still find it extremely hard to fight back the tears even after so long. I don't how the guys stood in that formation for his memorial. R.I.P. and know that we will not forget.

I don't remember the first time we met, but I do remember walking to elementary school with you. That was a trip we made together probably a thousand times; on bike, on foot, and later in life, by car. We played pick up basketball games, and had shootouts on the soccer field. We played hockey in the street at Lee's, and I'll always remember the game of 21 that you, me and Cody played to 101 on the small hoop on your mom's porch. The time you took the blame for me breaking your hoop and all the trouble we should have gotten into. We made up nicknames for bball, you Chris Scott, cause you could rebound like Chris Webber and shoot like Dennis Scott. I spent more time with you than any other human I've ever met, yet I seem to want more time every time I think of you. I cannot believe that my wife never met you and my children will never know you. It makes me happy that you grew up to be the man I never dreamed of being. You wrote me a letter that first year at college, and I never wrote you back...I will always regret that. When you came home you always checked up on my mom and I thank you for that.

I wore number 8 at PLU in your name, and still hold on to your high school jersey dearly. I remember Amie telling me that you told her to look after me, cause I needed someone to take care of me, and you went out and helped take care of our entire nation. You were always a man who gave whatever he could, taking blame even when it wasn't due, if it meant it would improve someone else's life. You are forever my brother, and I miss you every day.

To Kurtis Arcala's Family. We will continue to remember and honor Kurtis for his service to our country and for his sacrifice for our freedom. Our son served with Kurtis for a short time but they became friends and I know that he is sadly missed but fondly remembered. May God continue to hold you in his hands of peace and comfort as yet another anniversary of Kurtis' passing is here and I pray through these small heartfelt messages that you will continue to have smiles on your faces remembering the young, brave man you called your own. God called him home and now he is truly in the land of the free and blessed.

Aloha Brother Kurtis,
Yesterday, there was a festival/event at the Ravenhall and it was in memorial of all the ones who we have lost and also a celebration of hope and new beginnings for the next generation. It was an honor to share the Hawaiian Culture (hula dance) with all.

Thanking you for serving in the military. My son and nephew are also serving in the military.

My name is Christine Ryan, and I'm a teacher at Sumner High School in Sumner, WA. Today we had our Veteran's Day assembly and as we walked in, we were handed little slips of paper with a soldier who gave the ultimate sacfrice's name on it. I got Kurtis Arcala. It is my honor and privelage to have now read his story and know about someone that I owe my freedom and right to teach too.

I want to let you know that Kurtis is being honored in other places around the US today as we celebrate our freedom and honor those who gave their lives to protect it.

I can't believe its been 3 years today. In all the justified press coverage of the 9/11 anniversary, I wanted to come and remember Kurt. I still remember when I walked into the TOC that day and found out it was you. I remember being at your memorial service on Remagen, and I remember the sickened feeling I had in that sweaty hangar. Man your guys, especially SSG D, took your death hard. I remember you cutting my hair in 2003 while we were living in the Mausoleum in Baghdad. I remember the day your leg was broken in the training accident as we were coming out of the field, and how you fought to get yourself back into shape. I wish I had something more profound to say, but I just wanted to let your family know that you've not been forgotten by those of us who sweated and bled in Iraq. I hope time has eased some of their wounds as well.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Kurtis, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Kurtis you were my cousin, a best friend of mine and like a brother. I'll never forget everything we shared. From hanging out playing with G.I. Joes to playing basketball down at the courts. Your smile and laugh brought happiness to all around you. I go on living my life remembering the good times, but even now looking at your pictures makes me cry. For every moment I had in your presence I feel grateful, and for all the moments I'll miss I hurt. I remember when you used to wear that camo hat as a kid. No one could get you to take it off for more than a few minutes at a time. You took that to your grave. You are a true soldier and I thank you for my freedoms. Even though we have never met, I wanted to share a poem with you.
You see I lost my only son when he was one month away from his 22nd birthday. That was in 1980. I know the pain and the sorrow that you feel.
I know in time the awful hurting inside of you will heal. I know right now it’s hard to Imagine that life can even go on. I can’t imagine anything worse then losing a child.

I am a Christian and I know that God’s strength saw me and my husband through. There were many days we just didn’t want to go on, but He was always there to help us.

I hope you will not take offence by receiving this. I only mean it to help and
let you know that I care. I will keep you in my prayers.

May God bless you in a very special way, as He took a very special person from this world to be with Him. I thank God every day for men like your son who are willing to fight for our freedom and the freedom of oppressed nations. I know Kurtis has made a difference in every life he has touched. God bless everyone in his family.

Remember, John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should nor perish but have everlasting life.”

At Death of a Child
“I’ll lend you for a little while
A child of mine,” He said.
“For you to love the while he lives
And mourn when he is dead.
It may be six or seven years, or
Twenty two or three,
But will you ’til I call him back,
Take care of him for Me?
He’ll bring his charms to gladden you,
And should his days be brief,
You’ll have his lovely memories
As solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay,
Since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught down there
I want this child to learn.
I’ve looked this wide world over
In my search for teachers true,
And from the throngs that crowd life’s lane,
I have selected you.
Now will you give all your love,
Nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate me when I come to call
To take him back again?”

I fancy that I heard them say,
“Dear Lord, Thy will be done.
For all the joy this child shall bring,
The risk of grief we’ll run;
We’ll shelter him with tenderness,
We’ll love him while we may,
And for the happiness we’ve known
Forever grateful stay.
But should the angels call for him,
Much sooner then we’ve planned,
We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes
And try to understand.”
