To the family of Cpl. Anthony T. McElveen:
As you may know, the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation has honored your loved one at its Memorial Day Sunday worship service (each year in May) … since the time of your fallen hero's ultimate sacrifice. We will continue to pay tribute to our nation's veterans … lest we ever forget!
Now we would like to honor you … as the next-of-kin … who have also paid a great price on the altar of liberty. On Sunday 29 September at 11:00 a.m. we will host a Gold Star Family Sunday.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship … as we pay tribute to your sacrifice. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain (Colonel-Retired) Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “By Dying, We Live.” The special music will be the husband/wife vocal/piano — Wickman Duo. Following the worship experience, your family is invited to attend a social time in our Fellowship Hall … with some light refreshments.
As this historic chapel has limited seating, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org
If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.
Respectfully,
Leila Campbell

To the family of Cpl. Anthony T. Melveen:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.
The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).
As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.
Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

Samuel Sung
February 27, 2009
Hello, my name is 2nd Lt. Samuel Sung. I went to boot camp with McElveen from June 2003 to September 2003. During the 1st phase of boot camp, I was in the rack next to him. I would get on line in the squad bay right next to him. I remember him always being selfless. His rack mate would be going crazy looking for the left boot that the drill instructor demanded, and McElveen would always help him. That amazed me about him. He also was into martial arts, and I remember him telling me that his recruiter told him not to tell the drill instructors that he knew martial arts lest they pick on him. I also remember him showing me a hook kick while we were cleaning, and showing me a couple moves with a broom. After 1st phase, we drifted apart, and I remember on visitor's Thursday a man, whom I presume was his father, came and spent the day with him. After that, I lost contact.
When I returned from studying abroad in South Korea from 2005-6, I tried to get in contact with McElveen, to see what he has been up to. I couldn't find him on Marine Online, which meant 1 of 2 things. 1) He became separated from the Marine Corps or 2) He died. I went to the Fallen Heroes website, typed his name (which I could never spell correctly, so I had to look at our boot camp yearbook), and found out the unfortunate news. He had died in Iraq, while I was in Korea studying abroad.
I had for a while had a desire to get in contact with his former wife and family, and tell them these couple of memories that I have with him. I have a wife of my own, and I know that she would appreciate such a gesture were something to happen to me.
Please, if you know the family or his wife, feel free to email me at the included email that I will leave.
God bless.

Ant, It has been 3 years since your death. We miss you here at Lin Furniture. You are always in our thoughts and prayers. We have your memorial picture hanging on our wall and many people see it every day and ask about you. You will not be forgotten. We are proud to say we knew you as a co worker and a friend. We saw you grow from a boy of 16 to a young man who was so proud to be a Marine. We were so proud of the gentleman you became. Thank you for everything you were and for giving your life protecting The United States and us. May you rest in peace. Linda and Dave

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Anthony, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

We apologize for being late with this post, we did not know this website existed until resently. God Bless Legacy.com for this means to honor our heros.
We can't imagine what you have been going through since being notified of the death of your young Warrior. The Military and families all over the USA and world are grieving with you and praying for you. What a very brave individual you have in your family that would give up a life for their homeland and its people so they can remain free. Your Freedom Fighter has served the Country above and beyond the call of duty, let no one ever tell you different. With the mission now completed your Warrior has been redeployed to Heaven to sit on the right hand of the Supreme Commander and Chief. The Father above has Anthony in his arms and will give him peace as well as eventually easing your pain and suffering. God speed to you and Cpl. Anthony T. McElveen, our HERO. We are so proud of them that are willing to sacrifice for this great Nation, THANK YOU.

To the family of Cpl. Anthony T. McElveen:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 27 May, 2007. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “Remembering” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.
As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To the family of Cpl. McElveen,
I lost my son, John Holmason on that day. I feel the sadness and the grief. They were and will remain hero's forever. I keep waiting for this pain to ease a little and as I sit here crying, I don't think that it ever will. My heart goes out to each one of the families that felt the loss on this horrible day. They were my son's family in Iraq and for that I will never forget any one of them. I think of each one every day. I know that they are in heaven together and we will see them again. God bless you.

To Tony's family and friends-
My family and I are praying for you and your family during this difficult time. We send our deepest empathy as we lost our Marine on 11/30/05 in Fallujah. We are comforted to know that our Marines are serving their country with such honor and bravery. We are so proud of our Marines and all of our other service men and women for all that they have done and continue to do to keep us safe and to give us the freedom we have that so many take for granted.
They are true Heroes and need to always be remembered for their selflessness and sacrifice to better our world. We will forever be united in the loss of our heros. We are so sorry for your loss and hope our words will ease some of the pain, and maybe fill some of your emptiness.
Yesterday, Today, Forever – Semper Fi - Marines!

May you not be forgotten and rest in peace Ant. I'm always going to remember the night I spent at your house doing homework in high school and you nearly let me take myself out with your kung fu stuff. Or how you slept in the attic without a heater and no matter how cold it was, you had two blankets, one to keep you warm, and one to block the fan you always had blowing on you. I don't know how you could sleep in that cold attic, I froze myself to sleep. You are hero. I'll never forget those good times together and the sacrifice you gave for this country. Rest friend.

I have already written in here, but I feel I need to write this also. When I was in church today my pastor was talking about Destiny and Purpose. It got me thinking about Tony and I believe this is what the Lord was telling me.Even though Tony lived a short life here on earth he had a full life.I believe his purpose here on earth was fulfilled. He was a son, brother and husband. He was a marine, which he loved.I believe his purpose was for him to help Tina become the person she is today. To help her become a stronger person. To help the people in Iraq,to give them hope and joy. I believe that is exactly what he did. With all the turmoil over in Iraq I believe he gave the people so much joy.The People needed him there. What we don't realize is that the Lord already knew when his time was going to be up.The Lord knew that Tony was going to be all these things and I believe he did accomplish the things he was to accomplish here on earth. To me this was Tonys purpose here on earth. Now we wait to see him again and see what else the Lord has done with him in Heaven.

We only had the privledge of knowing Tony since our nephew "Gilbert Lopez" introduced us to him by bringing him into our home during times back in the states. We were able to spend Thankgiving and Easter with him and the thing I remember the most was how wonderful he was with our, at the time 4 year old. She latched on to him and followed him all over every time he came with Gilbert. He would play with her and talk Star Wars with her. She is 5 now and she was very upset with the news. "He was the only one that talked good Star Wars with me" He talked of his family and his girlfriend/wife with a gleam in his eye. I thank God that we were able to meet and get to know Tony. He was a good man and our prayers are with his family. We will miss him dearly.

We will always remember Tony in our home. Tony came to us via oor son who served with Tony in the marines and Iraq. Gilbert brought him home several times and we welcomed Tony with open arms. He brought a lot of joy and laughter to us. On a visit to our our home for Thanksgiving he asked Gilbert if we had turkey or tacos since we were hispanic. I laughed so hard that I told him he was half right. We have turkey on Thusday and tacos the next day made of left over turkey. We also were very touched when he asked our son to be his best man at his wedding to Carrie. Thank you Tony for letting us love you as a member of our family. I never met Tony, but Tina and I were pretty close one summer at circle r. i remember her showing us a picture of her brother. i remember her telling us about how much she loves him, and how close they were. she was telling us about how they had been coming to circle r for so long together, and for some reason, it all stuck so well into my mind.
the other night, when i was watching the news and eating dinner before i had to leave for a choir thing, i saw his picture on the tv screen. i had heard about the two minnesotans dying ... but i had never imagined that i would know one of them. i saw his name under the picture, and thought "wow, where have i heard that name before?" and when they said he graduated from little falls ... i froze.
that night, as i was talking to some friends, one mentioned how the minnesotans died, and it took no more than a second for me to burst into tears. its so sad for me, i cannot imagine what Tina and her parents, and all of their friends, and tony's friends, are feeling.
now is not a time to mourn a death, but rather to celebrate the life of a great brother, son, friend, and soldier.

Tony McElveen was by far the best man that I have ever known. I have lived for 25 years on this earth and in that time, I can not think of any one man that I have met that was a better person than Tony. No one have I met with such a passion for life and love for his family, especially you Tina, and dedication to his country. Tony was the kind of guy that was happy-go-lucky, the life of the party, and friends with everybody. He was that one person that you meet in life that is liked by everyone, envied by many, and hated by none. I can not remember anyone ever having said a cross word about Tony.
I first met Tony at Circle R Ranch, a summer horse riding camp. My first memories with Tony were him and Tina hanging out with Pete, Baker, Hannah, Amy and I out at summer camp. Remember those days? Remember them always they were the best of times. Tony had a special bond with one of the horses at CRR named Bambi. He loved that horse more than any other and she loved him.
Over the years we all grew up together, far apart as we all were. Seeing each other for a week or two at a time, or a couple days here and there, always picking up right where we left off, almost like family. During those growing up years I have many good memories of Tony. Remember Pete when you, Baker, Tony, and I used to always talk about the camp girls in the back of outer dorm? Jess, remember when we were painting the tack barn and you and Tony got into the paint fight?
I have one particular memory of Tony that really sticks out in my mind. Tony and I were having a chat about girls as we often did in those days. Actually it was more me asking for advice but either way, we were up in wallens and I asked him what he was looking for in a girl. He must have talked for a half an hour describing his perfect woman. I was amazed at his answer because at the end of it all he told me that he had already found all of those things in one person. That person was his wife Carrie. Carrie, Tony loved you very much and he showed it even back then.
I was a little worried when Tony told me that he was going to join the military as is anyone when a loved one serves their country during world unrest. But never in a million years did I think that he wouldn’t return. Tony was a dedicated marine and the best of soldiers because he was naturally very good at what he did.
I lend my heart and prayers out to all who Tony has touched in his life. He was the greatest of men, a dedicated soldier, a best friend, a loving big brother, son, and husband.
Tony we all love you.
