John Fry Obituary

Funeral services for GySgt. John David Fry will be 1 p.m. Thursday, March 23, 2006, at Fellowship Bible Church with Pastor Grant Kaul officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Rosemound Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Connally/ Compton Funeral Directors. Marine Gunnery GySgt. (posthumously awarded) John David Fry, 28, of Lorena was born Oct. 30, 1977, and graduated from Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego Nov. 10, 1995. Shortly thereafter, he attended Marine Combat Training on Camp Pendleton, Calif., and his Military Occupational Specialty School at Marine Corps Service Support School, Marine Corps Base Camp, Lejeune, N.C., where he served for four years. During this time, he deployed twice: once with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit on Operations Southern Watch and Desert Thunder during the winter of 1997-1998, and the second time with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit in support of Operation Shining Hope in 1999. In June of 2000, Gunnery GySgt. Fry made a permanent change of station to Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz., where he served for approximately a year and a half. While there, Gunnery GySgt. Fry graduated first in his class and was recognized as the Honor Graduate. As an EOD technician, Gunnery GySgt. Fry was stationed overseas at Marine Corps Air Station in Iwakuni, Japan, from July of 2002 until April of 2005. Among his many deployments and accomplishments while stationed there, Gunnery GySgt. Fry attended the Marine Corps Staff Noncommissioned Officer School as a student in the career course. On Jan. 8, 2003, he again distinguished himself by graduating above all his peers, once again earning the title of the class Honor Graduate. In June of 2005, he reported to the 2nd EOD Company, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C. In Aug. of 2005, Gunnery GySgt. Fry deployed as an EOD Team Leader to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During his time, he conducted 231 explosive ordnance disposal devices (IED) rendered safe, one vehicle borne improvised device (VBIED) rendered safe, the largest ever in the Al Anbar province, and destroyed over 10,600 lbs. net explosive weight (N.E.W.) of unexploded ordnance (UXO), as well as numerous other missions. His accomplishments denied the enemy the ability to exploit these weapons against U.S. coalition forces, as well as against Iraqi civilians, thereby saving countless lives. On March 8, 2006, Gunnery GySgt. Fry was serving as an EOD Technician with 8th Engineer Support Battalion (forward) as part of Task Force Dagger, in support of combat operations, four miles west of Habbaniyah, Iraq. While searching for secondary Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), to ensure the safety of his fellow Marines military and civilian personnel, Gunnery GySgt. Fry was in the vicinity of an IED when it detonated, killing him instantly. Gunnery GySgt. John David Fry's courage, steadfast devotion to duty, and personal sacrifice reflected great credit upon himself, his family, The United States Marine Corps, The United States Naval Service, and the The United States of America. John David Fry is survived by his high school sweetheart and loving wife, Malia Michelle Fry; his daughter, Kathryn Michelle Fry; and his sons, Gideon David Fry and C.L. Fry. His awards and decorations are as follows: Purple Heart (posthumously), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (with 1 gold star in lieu of 2nd award), Combat Action Ribbon (posthumously), Navy Unit Commendation (with Bronze star in lieu of 2nd award), Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal (with 2 bronze stars in lieu of 3rd award), National Defense Service Medal (with bronze star in lieu of 2nd award), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal (posthumously), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (with 2 bronze stars in lieu of 3rd award), Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon (with 2 bronze stars in lieu of 3rd award), NATO medal, and Certificate of Recommendation, and Letter of Appreciation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the below Education Account which has been set up for his children. What a sacrafice this man made for all of us. God bless him and his family. My great grandfather's name was John Fry and he was from Texas as well. Perhaps we were related to Sgt. Fry, perhaps not - but surely we are all grateful for his greatness. I am a widow of a Vietnam veteran, and my heart goes out to all his loved ones.

I regret that I am only now learning about John's death. I know his mother, Beth, from Bible Class and singing back in the early 70's...and his father, Charles tuned our piano for us when we still lived there in Lorena. I am so grieved to know of John's death and great sacrifice for the freedom of all. I can only promise to keep his family and friends in my prayers and to continue to honor him and his life and the giving of that life. Beth & Charlie, we love you and will hold you in our prayers as time goes on. Michael, thank you for all you did and for blessing many through your life. We will look forward to joining you soon where Jesus has you now. I will plan on getting to know you when I come, too. Until then, rest in peace, brother. You definitely deserve it. May God bless all who may read this.

I don't know if you still read this Malia, but I think of you and the kids often. I appreciate the sacrifice that John made everyday. Our guys shouldn't have to do this, but they choose to serve and love it. John stood for everything Marine Corps, but still was true to himself. What an amazing dad and husband. I always think of him when I'm at tributes or when I watch DJ with the kids. I can not express how much knowing you has meant to my life. Even though we have lost contact your family still remains a big part of our lives. Josh talks of Gideon often and wonders how he is and the boys always speak John's name when they think of daddy's friends that are now gone. Josh always states he wishes Gideon still had his daddy. I hope you are doing well and we will always honor John's sacrifice by keeping his story alive and a prayer when we think you may need it the most. I miss you.

The rank of Gunnery Sgt, USMC, tells us a great deal about this man. The words written on these pages tell us more. The wonderful moving tribute, with its accompanying thoughts, allows us the privilege of watching John grow from a boy to a man, and enables us to see something of his life. That life was lived with honor, duty to country, purpose and concern for all. Nothing can take away your pain, although each of us would do so if we could. All I can hope is that your memories, and the love that this special man felt for each of you, will help ease some of your burden.
Rest well Gunny - Semper Fi

"Dear Family of John D. Fry - I know this is a late posting, but please know that your son, husband, father, will not be forgotten by those of us in this awful "club" which have lost someone very close to us as we send our men/women to fight for a better life for others, and for us. I don't know how long you cry - I still do. But I am also happy to remember my son, LCpl Chad B. Maynard, KIA Ramadi, Iraq on June 15, 2005. Hopefully we will find ourselves smiling more, and crying less, but never, ever forgetting. Bless you and your family, and thank you for your service to our country."

I just learned of Gunnery Sgt. Fry's death today. I lost my son, also a Marine, to Ramadi, Iraq, on June 15, 2005.

Bless you, his family, as you face life without him. Please know how thankful we are that you and your Marine offered your service to our country by letting him do what he wanted to do and be what he wanted to be: a protector of our country, ourselves and our way of life.

August 25, 2007

My heart aches for your loss. I truly know what you are going through having lost my brother who was KIA in 2005 in Iraq. May God be with your family and may the wonderful memories your have of him sustain you during the most difficult moments.

I met John while living on camp Lejeune. He and Malia were our neighbors. We were there for their first child's birth. They were newlyweds, already starting a family. We were so hurt over his loss. We think of you often.

August 14, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To the Family of John D. Fry:
I first met John in 2005 in Fallujah, and quickly became friends with him. He was a good man, passionate about his job and always hard working. He always had in mind the well being of his team, making sure that equipment was up, minds were alert, and above all safety was first. He was a devoted Marine, a respected leader, and a remarkable human being. We love you John.

March 16, 2007

I just recently learned of this web-site so this tribute to John comes late but it comes from my heart.

It is with the deep sadness that I ask the family and friends of GySgt. John David Fry to accept my most sincere and heart felt condolences. Your tremendous loss is shared and mourned by the members of the EOD family but more especially by the members of the Marine Corps EOD family. Even those who have gone before, the ones that you don’t know and in all probability will never meet. We sincerely appreciate the sacrifices of John, his family and friends.

John is a hero. He is not hero because of where he died or how he died. He is a hero because of how he lived. Even though he knew the dangers involved in his job he continued to do it. As an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician his duty was to locate, disarm and dispose of IED’s and other explosive ordnance. This is an extremely hazardous undertaking and he knew that, he had done this before. He had also lost friends and comrades performing this same duty. This is what makes John Fry a true American hero. A hero that I admire tremendously, respect and hold in the highest regard.

Freedom is not free; it is paid for by out heroes; and for those who fight for it, Freedom has a flavor the protected will never know! John paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

I never had the honor of meeting or serving with John, I had retired from the Marine Corps before John was born, but I knew him. I knew him because John was a Marine Corps Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician. They are indeed a very special breed among a special breed. THE MARINES! It would have been a tremendous honor for me to have had the opportunity to work along side of John.

I had the honor of attending the ceremony at which John was honored by having his name was placed on the EOD Memorial at Eglin AFB. This is an honor which is only extended to EOD technicians who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. His name was placed there by and as an honor from his EOD family. It is there for all to see and he will always be honored by the visitors to the memorial.

I know the pain parents feel when they loose a child. I lost a son 19 years ago. There is no greater pain and it defies description. It is a pain that never goes away. It is a pain that will never end. It is a pain that is all consuming. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers always. May God Bless and keep you today, tomorrow and forever!

Malia, we will keep you in our thoughts always. I wish I could take your away pain. Hold on to the memories and your friends.

Some people have to ask if they made a difference in the world but;
MARINES DON’T HAVE THAT PROBLEM.

It's been a couple months since we returned from Iraq. I don't know who reads this and I don't know exactly why I am writing this. I was a Buffalo driver with C Co of TF Dagger. When our platoon heard of what happened we were irate. We couldn't imagine that a fine Marine that we worked with so much would no longer be able to joke with us and make fun of my driving. John was always on it. Both on mission and off thou he wanted you to be relaxed and have a good time. My fondest memory was late at night when we got back into camp, we would always race our trucks down the main strip and I only managed to beat him once but he let me win. He will always be in my heart.

To John's family and friends-
My family and I are praying for you and your family during this difficult time. We send our deepest empathy as we lost our Marine on 11/30/05 in Fallujah. We are comforted to know that our Marines are serving their country with such honor and bravery. We are so proud of our Marines and all of our other service men and women for all that they have done and continue to do to keep us safe and to give us the freedom we have that so many take for granted.
They are true Heroes and need to always be remembered for their selflessness and sacrifice to better our world. We will forever be united in the loss of our heros. We are so sorry for your loss and hope our words will ease some of the pain, and maybe fill some of your emptiness.

Our sincere appreciation is rendered to the life of John Fry for his faithful dedication to the United States, for serving his God, his Country and his Family with honor and an unconditional love. So few of us have accomplished so much but so many of us have not been placed in these situations. But, we have families whom we can love and cherish such as John has. That we are able to commit to.

Thank you John Fry for what you stood for and for now being a heavenly member of God's army!

May God bless the family of John Fry.

God has a purpose for everything he does. When John was born, his life was already decided by God. Even though it is sad that John died so early in his life, he saved many more lives. God will heal the pain of John’s lost with his wife, Malia, and his children. John and Malia’s extended family will also feel the love and healing with God over time; it is all part of the grieving process. Just remember to put your faith in God as we can not change our destiny, but we can cherish every moment of our precious lives as you never know when it is your time. Keep the happy memories and thoughts of John close to you, Malia, and always tell your children to pray to their father every night as John can hear their prayers with God. In time they will know that their father died in honor and serving his country with pride.

God Bless and with love, Tabatha

I didn't know John Fry, but I do know a nice person in his family and I was touched by what I've read here.

All I can offer is this, from my own experience: As time passes, however slowly, your sorrow of losing John will lessen. Eventually you WILL more easily and happily focus on the good, kind, brave and just normal everyday nice things John brought to the lives of people around him.

Sounds like there are many good, kind, brave, normal everyday nice things to focus on, so I hope that 'eventual' day can arrive soon.

My prayers are with you If I am sent to Iraq or elsewhere, I will attempt to accomplish my duties with the same courage that SGT Fry demonstrated.

God Bless.

Dear Fry family,

We are very sorry to hear of your loss--of a husband, a father, a son and a brother who will be deeply missed. I, Priscilla, only knew John as a child in the context of a dear family who served the Lord unselfishly, using the gifts He had given. I conclude that as John continued to grow, he carried with him those values, even giving the ultimate in his service. May you know the comfort of the Lord's tender care, and know that we grieve with you and pray for you.

We will pray for you.

To the family of Gysgt. Fry,

I worked with Gysgt. Fry for the last four months of his tour in Iraq. Hearing of his passing wounded me deeply. He was a good man and a great Marine. It was a honor for me to watch him and his Marines do their job on a day to day basis. He had such a passion to help other Marines learn more about the dangers that were out there in Iraq. He and the men he worked with are the true heroes that go unnoticed everyday. I watched him do things that truly were unselfish and amazing everyday. It was my honor to know him as a friend and work with him as a Marine for the time that I did. He will be missed and always remembered. My heart goes out to his family and everyone that cared for this man.

As a non-vet riding with the Patriot Guard Riders I am meeting a lot of families of fallen soldiers. I morn the death of John D. Fry as if he was my own son. Any parent or wife can stand proud of his contributions as a soldier, but it does not fill the void. Remember you are not alone 20,817 Partiot Guard Riders are sharing your greif and if you called anyone of them they would come to your side and gladly sheed a tear.

It was an honor to attend Gunnery Sgt. Fry's services as a member of the PGR. My deepest condolences to John’s family and friends on the lose of this true American hero.

Some gave none, some gave some, John gave all for us and this nation must never forget his sacrifice.

Dear Fry family,

I remember John from when we first attended church with your family over a decade ago. Our children grew up together. We were all so proud of John's accomplishments in the Marines, his marriage to sweet Melia, and the birth of the babies. We have always loved your family.

Our son Alan commissioned into the USAF as a 2nd Lt. last August. We are just beginning to experience life as a military family.

The funeral was overwhelming. To be met by a literal wall of American flags as hundreds of Patriot Riders held silent vigil around a fallen hero that we knew and loved took my breath away. Scores of men in red coats served as honor guards. Active duty men and women from all branches of service were there to honor John, as well as a few cadets from Baylor. The church was packed with people who loved John. The emotions were intense.

Hero, patriot, lover of Christ, country, family, and friends, John was all of those and more. Thank you, my young friend, thank you.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. I did not know John David Fry, but witnessed the funeral procession on Speegleville Road after his memorial service. The numerous attendees and Patriot Guard Riders prompted me to take the time to look up who was being honored. I've read about John David, and am so proud of him and those like him who serve our country. Thank you for your sacrifice. Dear Malia & Family,

I am very sorry to hear of your loss. I can't imagine what you are going through, but I was absoultely crushed when Jake called home with the terrible news. Although we lost touch after EOD school, I often thought of you and your family. Especially as Jeremy has grown into the curious little boy and is just as quick as Gideon was when we were at Eglin. My heart and prayers are with you in the long journey ahead.
