Hello,

We apologize for being so late in expressing our deepest condolences to you and your family. We want you to know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this holiday season and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo, service branch, rank and hometown of Philip J. Martini US Marine Lance Corporal.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families, friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,

Dear Phil Sr., & Family,

I cannot believe in 19 days it will be three years since Phil Jr's death. I think of him often and wonder what type of social worker he would have become. Without a doubt a great one. What a smile. I have a picture of him on my board at work. I will never forget him.
So, if I hug you a little tigher, or a little longer, when you come to visit at work, just know I am sending hugs to Phil Jr. as well.

Dear family of Cpl. Philip J. Martini,

We want to say thank you. We understand that no words can be adequate for your sorrow. We certainly do not want to intrude upon your privacy. As Americans we want you to know that we deeply appreciate the ultimate sacrifice your loved one has made for all of us. We also would like for you to be aware that with this letter comes our special concern and prayers for you. We are all safer because young men and women who love their country, and know the value of a free nation, are willing to put themselves in harms way, and lay down their lives to keep this nation free and safe for all of us.
Your sacrifice is also very great. We know that we can give little comfort; however, the knowledge that your loved one did not die in vain, but died in the service of our country, gives each of us a noble example of the value of life, and the responsibility of freedom. We hope this will bring pride and comfort to you.
We at Gethsemane Church believe that there is purpose to life. We send this letter with our deepest appreciation for the greatest of sacrifices, you and your loved one have given to this country. We know it is not enough, but please allow us to assure you that your loved one is not forgotten.

Very Sincerely

Frank G. Noyes

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

On that day when your pack is the heaviest, when the sun's the hottest, when the brush is the thickest, and the path to the objective is the steepest, and you're not sure that you're going to be able to make it, you're going to look over your shoulder, and, when you do that, at the rear of the column, what are you going to see? You're going to see Lance Corporal Martini. He will be in the midst of the scrap, there to support you, there to hold you up, and there to encourage you.

My prayers and thoughts go out to you and your whole family and all of Philip's friends with our deepest sympathy to your family. He is serving a bigger calling and in a much happier and peaceful place in Heaven watching over you and will always be with you and us in spirit.

If you are the same Martini's that have lived there for many years, my name is Joanne (Drewno) I actually was your babysitter and use to sit for you (I believe you may have received my name from a Red Cross class I took to learn CPR and receive a babysitting certification). I remember going upstairs and in one room to the right (if I am recalling correctly) their was the crib where I use to put your baby, potentially Phillip at the time to sleep (I think it was Joey and Philip). We use to walk through the big area in the back to a road and take walks down to Torrance Avenue and back. You had huge Great Dane, that I want to say was called Max (or a large breed), who use to sit on the couch and just adore the boys. I never could believe how gentle he was with them and how much control they had over him for being so young and him so big. I use to think it was the neatest thing that your dog got the royal treatment to be one of the family, as ours only got the floor and to have such joy with the boys - he was like their own horse! I now live in Frankfort and am deeply moved by Philip's passing and his bravery. I am an Allstate Agent now here in Frankfort and my mom and dad (Phyllis and John Drewno still live in Lansing just West on 186th Street in a subdivision behind the condos just west of Torrance) I have two boys of my own and often I remember the energy your boys had (I think I was destined to have boys by all the little ones I learned from back then! The bounding energy they have and I only grew up with girls in my family). Now I am busy entertaining my own and understanding how quickly they grow.

Philip is a hero for all of us. His bravery and commitment will not be forgotton! I will be keeping you and your familly in my prayers and thougths and hope you can find comfort in all of the people like me remembering the good times.

If there is ever an opportunity to say hello, if you are the same people I am remembering, please call me or e-mail and I would love to say hello and offer any help or a donation to a charity on Philip's behalf. In the past I have taken my own kids trick-or-treating and have met up with other families I have babysat like the Banasiak's (Jimmy, Mark and Steven) and the Reich's and the Joey, Elizabeith and Daniel Riley (I believe they mostly went to South, but the Reich's may have went to Illiana).

May God Bless you and help you find peace in your time of sorrow.

SEMPER FI TO A FALLEN BROTHER GOD BLESS

This is an original poem I wrote for a brother Marine that answered the call, I find it comforting and I hope you will also.

The distant call of the bugle.....

As it sounds taps once more.....

So lonely and forlorn is its song.....

As it echoes through the valley.....

Yet none but a few understand.....

The meaning of the call.....

A tribute to the fallen.....

Yet a call to duty for the one.....

To stand their watch at the gate.....

For this is the duty of his path.....

Guarding the pearly gates......

As our brothers past have done.....

Changing the guard as the bugle sounds.....

Dignity and pride fills his heart.....

As he stands his final watch.....

But remember.....

He stands beside you.....

As the distant call of the bugle.....

Sounds taps once more.....

Respectfully.

Dear Martini Family,

Even though we have never met, I feel as if we are a part of a "family". My daughter's fiancee was killed by an IED in Iraq on Oct. 3, 2005. It is my prayer that you will feel God holding you close to His heart just as He held my family. May you know His peace and comfort during these difficult days.

In His grace,

ROGER VANFOSSEN
