Bryant, I just learned of your passing today, some many years after. Please know you have been my thoughts throughout the years since we last spoke. Know that you embodied everything an NCO is, know that I have shed a few tears today, and put back a few beers. I will keep my thoughts and memories of you alive, and pass them on to my son, and use you as a positive example of how a man should live his life. Your memory will live on.

We pray you both know how much you mean to us. For every sacrifice you made for not just our freedom, but the freedom of our children and generations to come is incomprehensible. May the Lord keep you and watch over you always. Your legacy is one of honor Bryant as LaNita does her best to carry on knowing one day she will see you again. The work you do for other women who suffer as you have LaNita is priceless and we know Bryant is standing tall and proud as he watches over you. God bless you both always. Love the Campos Family

LaNita,
I was just sent this URL from Matthew Holmes who, I believe, knew your husband. I read everything there was and all the links I could find about him. I saw the photos too. I cannot tell you how touched I am by the amount of love that obviously surrounded your man's life. Yesterday I recalled the 65th anniversary of my uncle, my namesake, who was killed in action in Manila, Luzon. He lives on in the hearts and memories of my family just like Bryant will also live on. God bless you and your family.

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Mam,family, and friends, : As always, it's hard to find words to say... First, I truly hope that this message does you, your family, and all friends of SSG Herlem well... it's amazing as one wrote... over a year now... I didn't find out about the news until about a month after... I wish I could have been at the funeral... when I heard about it, it schocked me. I always tell everybody that we are not superman and you never know when your time may come... but regardless, I was still amazed... maybe because I saw Herlem as a superman. Well, anyways... I was one of SSG Herlem's PLATOON SGT. in Korea... I was also his wing man at one point in Korea. I remeber one time when he got frost bite on his hand. I am telling you all... he would rather get frost bite in his hand than complain... ONE EXAMPLE, why he was a true brave hero! I was with him in Camp Casey... then he followed me over to Ft Hood, j/k. After we were forced to make an MOS change at Hood... he stayed in Ft. Hood to continue his career as a SCOUT... I decided I would stay in ADA... I tried to convince him to stay ADA but he was too hoah! I say this because I support those people that say he enjoyed his job. I wasn't there in Iraq on that tragic day but I am willing to bet some money that he probably told the enemy something like what the hell do you think you are doing, you idiot... he was the type that would fight until he couldn't move... that was his attitude... Also, I was his sponsor for his promotion board to SSG. I can tell you he was more valuable than a SSG, I seeked his help as a senior to him even thoe he was my subordinate... THAT'S HOW GOOD HE WAS! Also, for all those of you from the engineering side of the house... he bragged so much about you all... just thought I would let you know... him and his sapper, too, another thing he loved. Ofcourse, to his wife... he loved you dearly... I remember the smile in his face when you went to visit him in Korea... I don't know if you remember me but my wife and I were sitting in the same table with you and (Herlo)at the military ball in Ft Hood. Well, I just kind of let my feelings out a bit but I know I speak on behalf of other comrades he served with who have not written for reasons of their own... I see comrades SSG Herlem and myself served with periodically and we always bring him up and talk about how such a great person he was... and how he touched us... I think about him everyday, specially, when i think about re-enlisting... I always wonder what kind of advice he would give me after all the things that have happened. My next re-enlistment would put me in debt status... so, it is a very important decision in my career and my life... I say this because whatever I decide... SSG Herlem... will be in my mind when I make this decision... If I stay and finish my career in the Army... I will continue to use him as a motivator... I will also continue to use him as an example of bravery and excellent leadership to soldiers I train... If I get out, plz don't be mad at me man... something tells me that you would support that, too. If I get out of the Army... I will continue to be thankful for people like you who have sacrificed more than words can say... LOVE YOU MAN!!! SI WAY! You know because of Korea I would settle for the CORONA , too, but I know Heaven has TECATE!

LaNita- To a wonderful and strong sister-in-law. Remember all of the good times and memories that you had with Bryant and the love that you shared. Bry died a hero doing what he loved the best.
Bryant will always be in our hearts forever. He touched so many peoples lives. He changed Sarah’s and my life forever. We will always have a special bond that only a few will understand being military wives. Find the strength and comfort in those around you. We are all here for you.
Bryant- To my big brother. You have been gone for a month now, but it seems like just yesterday. You said before that you knew that we all would not be the little family of 2 boys and 2 girls but you made that happen for a year. A year of getting to know each other and starting new memories. You are my hero and inspiration for never giving up on making your dream happen and becoming what you wanted to be in life, an Army soldier. You are in inspiration in not only my life but to the others that knew you. We will get to meet someday up in heaven were we can be a family again. Continue to watch over us all and keep us safe. I love you Bryant!

Here is the poem I read at the funereal. I wanted to post it here. I hope you don't mind. I love you, Lanita.
We all came together,
Both young and old;
To fight for our freedom,
To stand and be bold.
In the midst of all evil,
We stand our ground;
And we protect our country,
From all terror around.
Peace and not war,
Is what some people say;
But I’ll give my life,
So you can live the American way.
I give you the right,
To talk of your peace;
To stand in your groups,
And protest in our streets.
But still I fight on,
I don’t moan, I don’t whine;
I’m just one of the people,
Who is doing your time.
I’m harder than nails,
The enemy, I’ll hurt ‘em;
I’m the immortal soldier,
I’m Sgt. Bryant A. Herlem.
So stand in my shoes,
And leave from your home;
Fight for the people who hate you,
With the protests they’ve shown.
Fight for the stranger,
Fight for the young;
So they all may have,
The greatest freedom you’ve won.
Fight for the sick,
Fight for the poor;
Fight for the cripple,
Who lives next door.
But when your time comes,
Do what I’ve done;
For if you stand up for freedom,
You’ll stand when the fight’s done.

LaNita and Family,
I am deeply saddened to hear about Bryant. I served with Bryant in Korea in 2000 at Camp Howze. He was a great part in making that year the most memorable of my time in service. He was a great leader that knew how to motivate while keeping a positive fun loving attitude. I know that everyone who has ever served with Bryant will miss him. The world is definitely not as bright as it was with him in it.

Lanita and Family, I really don't know what to say I was really stunned when I saw the article in the paper. I served with Bryant in Det 2, 2174th USAG in Martinsville and also was in Germany with him when our unit was deployed for Joint Endevor/Guard. Bryant was a good man and a good soldier. He was the type of person you could always depend on.
I know that he really loved the Army and enjoyed what he did he will be sorely missed but not forgotten.

May God Bless and keep you and your family safe. Our love and prayers are with you at this time. I know that it is hard but hang in there and remember that Jesus loves you and so do we

LaNita,
Signing this guestbook has been one the most difficult things I have ever done. I know I have never met you but your husband was so very important to my son I feel a very unique bond. It should comfort you to know what a great man and soldier Bryant was. Geoff will always remember him and you both will forever be in my heart and prayers. His men loved him very much. I am so very sorry for your loss and pray for peace. Proud Army Mom.

Hi La Nita it's me....JODY
I too have known Bryant for many many many years. Actually, since kindergarten/first grade. Bryant has always been a true friend and a great inspiration to me (as well as sarcastic, hilarious, and GENUINE!). I have recently been in contact with Bryant and his wonderful wife, La Nita. Bryant contacted me through Classmates.com about 6 years ago, and boy was I happy to hear from him. I have always been proud to know Bryant and to be his friend. I will never forget our days in school, all the times hanging out in our favorite classrooms and enjoying our friendships with friends like Brian "FLEA", and Kelly and others like them. I can also remember the day he told me that he was going to the Army. I have never felt so patriotic and proud to have such a dear friend serve and protect our country. Such wonderful and sweet memories are held in my heart and I am so grateful that our liberties and freedoms here in America have been, and still are being, protected by Sgt. Bryant Herlem and others that are still serving to protect us overseas.
I pray for the family of the other soldier (I apologize I forgot his name)I know that peace and comfort will soon come, their sacrifice has not been in vain. I am proud to be an American, and definitely proud to be Bryant and La Nita Herlem's friend.
All my love and prayers,
Michelle Foster

Lanita, Again let me express my deepest sympathy to you and Bryant's family. I love you and will be praying for you each day. I only met Bryant that one time long ago, but I know he was a great man because you loved him so. He sacrificed all he had so others could know freedom. We miss you. God Bless!

Bryant:
We are deeply saddened by the ultimate sacrifice you've made but proud of the legacy you leave behind. All of us at American Standard are proud to have known you as the true soldier you have always been. I personally am proud to have stood with you and as a Veteran, I am ever humbled by the commitment you have shown, the attitude you displayed, and the fervor in which you performed your duties. It is with great sadness that we let go as you ascend to the ultimate battlefield in the sky. Rest in peace my friend as we stand at your feet and honor you for the man you truly are and the ultimate sacrifice you made so that all of us can live in freedom. Your legacy lives on as a tribute to your real value as an "Americcan Soldier". You will be sadly missed, but forgotten never. LaNita Has stepped up with strength we have never seen before to honor the man who was, and is her true love. She is doing you proud buddy. Until we meet again as soldiers who have served our country, I will surely miss you. Save a place for me as I want to stand beside you again.

LaNita,
I am so proud to have known Bryant and am thankful that I was luckey enough to have meet him. I am eased in knowing that Geoff learned everything he knows from such a fine soldier. You and SGT Gomez' families are in my prayers as well as SGT Herlem and SGT Gomez. Thank you for everything that you did for me and for all that SGT Herlem did for Geoff. I know that all of his boys over there will keep him them and he will never be forgotten.

I find it hard to imagine what you are going through. I did not personally know Bryant; although I did meet him on several occasions, but I feel as though I knew him very well because of you and the love you have for him. He is a very special person and I will always treasure the emails and photos that you shared with me and my family. I will treasure those photos of you both and remember the love you have for one another. You are a good friend and I will always be here for you either by telephone or email. I think of you daily and also remember Bryant in my thoughts and prayers.

LaNita, As I said on the phone with you, I can't even imagine your loss, Bryant was your best friend, just as Jimmy is mind. My heart aches for you, and Bryant would be so proud of you right now. I want to thank you and Bryant for the sacrifics you have made to help keep us safe. I want to extend that thanks to all the military men/women and their families. I am truely sadden by your loss, it really was a wake up call that we need to pray every night and morning for our soldiers. LaNita you should be so proud of Bryant, and cherish every memory, for I know Bryant has his arms around you right now, from heaven. He is walking beside you, and I know he is so proud.

Bryant may be gone but he certainly will never be forgotten. It was an honor and pleasure to have served with him in Detachment 2, 2174th USAG here in Martinsville. He was a steadfast friend and dedicated soldier and he died doing what he knew was right and honorable. We all will miss him deeply. May God Bless you and keep you safe.

Our thoughts are with you and Sgt. Gomez' families. We are proud that our son was able to serve with and learn from an execptional soldier. Knowing that Geoff was serving with Bryant was a source of comfort to us throughout this deployment. I was honored to have been able to correspond with Bryant and regret deeply that I will not be able to meet him. His legacy will live on in the soldiers that he trained and led. His service exemplifes the concepts of Duty, Honor, and Country.

Hey Bryant, we've been telling your story to everyone we know, and it's inspiring people who weren't paying attention to check in on their friends and family who are serving our country. Your sacrifice was a wake-up call for so many, myself especially. I never imagined this happening to one of my friends. Nita is doing you proud, dude. She's helping others cope with your loss, at a time when she would surely be forgiven for withdrawing for awhile. She loved you more than anything, and it shows in the way she honors your memory. You will never be forgotten.

LaNita and the Herlem family - I am so sorry for your loss. You are all in my prayers.
Bryant, a true American, and was one of my closest friends (though we hadn't been in contact in years); we were high school buddies. He was a major factors for me going into the Army. I miss his friendship already. From the time I met him, he always talked about having an Army career. I am glad that he pursued his dream; I have no doubt that he was instrumental in making better lives for the Iraqi people. I am proud of his service!
Bryant, I haven't seen you since high school...and, well, now won't be seeing you for a while (at least hopefully not). But when that day does come, please have at least a case ready for me when I arrive - traveling makes me thirsty!
Thanks for your friendship and service. Rest in peace, buddy!

My loving, wonderful husband... How do I say goodbye? How do I go through life without your voice, your smell, your touch? We loved deeply, and through your love and strength and God Almighty, I will find my way and make you proud. Wait for me and when God calls my name, we will be together again. My pain is deep, so deep, but my pride in you is infinite. You will always be my love and my hero. I LOVE YOU BABE.

To the Family of Staff Sgt. Bryant A. Herlem:
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son 12/1/05.
I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort. When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.

Our family shares the loss of another soldier to this difficult war. Your love for Bryant is larger than anything we can quantify in a guest book. But we lost our son, Spc. Benjamin Schuster to sniper fire on February 25, 2006, after only 9 days in country. Whose life matters any more or less in this terrible conflict? Each person is loved and valued and held precious by his or her own family and friends. We hold Bryant as loved and honored and important as our son Benjamin in every way, since each, for their own, was willing to give all. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time, and as long as we remember Ben, which will be as long as we live.
