Nathanael Doring Obituary

Published by Star Tribune on Jun. 6, 2006.
Doring, Captain Nathanael James May 30th, 1975 – May 27th, 2006. Nathanael James Doring was born on May 30th, 1975 in Kansas City, Missouri. His parents are James and Elizabeth Doring. Nate was baptized as a child of God by his own father, James, on May 30th, 1975. In 1978 he moved with his family to his home in Apple Valley, Minnesota where he spent childhood and teenage years. Nate attended Berea Lutheran Day School for grades 1-8, and on May 31st, 1989 became a confirmed member of Berea Lutheran Church. As a child Nate enjoyed fishing, camping and reading, but he developed a passion for soccer and aviation. He spent his high school years at Apple Valley Senior High, and graduated in June, 1993. Nate's mathematical inclinations led him to the Milwaukee School of Engineering where he studied Electrical Engineering and graduated with honors in 1998, but his love of flying ultimately led him to join the Marine Corps. On October 11th, 2001 Nate earned his wings, after which he trained to become a Cobra helicopter pilot and was eventually given the call sign "Chatters". Shortly before Nate's first deployment to Iraq, he married Lisa Marie Christianson on February 2nd, 2002. Besides being a pilot and a husband, he was also a loving father to Alex Doring, born January 5th, 1999. Nate served our country in the Marine Corp for seven years. He trained throughout the United States and was deployed once to Okinawa, Japan, and twice to Iraq. When Lisa was deployed earlier this year, he extended his second deployment in Iraq to be there with her. Capt. Nathanael James Doring was called home to his Heavenly Father on May 27th, 2006 when his helicopter crashed into Lake Habbaniyah in Iraq. He is survived by his wife Lisa, son Alex, parents James and Elizabeth, sister Cara and brother-in-law Frank, brother Gabe and his fiancée Brooke, niece Arianna, nephews Nathan and Nelson and a multitude of additional loving family members and friends. (The Marine Corps reported the official date of Nate's death as May 29, 2006, the date when his body was recovered.) A memorial service will be held in Captain Doring's honor at Berea Lutheran Church, 9308 Rich Valley Boulevard, Inver Grove Heights, at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 10. The interment at Arlington Cemetery is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, June 14 at 2 pm.

To the family of Capt. Nathanael J. Doring:

As you may know, the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation has honored your loved one at its Memorial Day Sunday worship service (each year in May) … since the time of your fallen hero's ultimate sacrifice. We will continue to pay tribute to our nation's veterans … lest we ever forget!

Now we would like to honor you … as the next-of-kin … who have also paid a great price on the altar of liberty. On Sunday 29 September at 11:00 a.m. we will host a Gold Star Family Sunday.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship … as we pay tribute to your sacrifice. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain (Colonel-Retired) Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “By Dying, We Live.” The special music will be the husband/wife vocal/piano — Wickman Duo. Following the worship experience, your family is invited to attend a social time in our Fellowship Hall … with some light refreshments.

As this historic chapel has limited seating, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also to let the Doring Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Nate, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Dear Alex,

Our family thinks about your Daddy all the time. We remember him as our hero and we're so thankful for him. Right now, my husband is walking where your daddy walked and doing the hard work your daddy did when he first became a Marine. Alex, you are brave and wonderful - just like your dad. We miss him very much and want you to know he will never be forgotten.

Our prayers and thoughts are with you and all of the family.

Nate was an awsome leader who looked out for his Marines. I will always remember the time he flew in 10 hot pizzas as well as cold sodas for his FARP team working at LZ Star in Yuma AZ. We also spent many hours around my truck drinking beer and sharing stories, what great times. Lisa and Alex our thoughts are with you!

Today is the 2nd anniversary of Nathanael's death (the date he crashed). I want to tell all of you who have left messages for us in this guestbook that the messages are read and re-read. The love and appreciation all of you have expressed has been a comfort I would have never expected to have, just as we have been surprised at the many kindnesses we've experienced from so many people.
Thank you to all of you.

I would like to send my deepest regrets. Nate's death was very shocking. The last time I saw Nate was in 1993. What I remember is Nate being a kind face, easy to have a conversation with. He was one of the good guys. You are in my prayers, God Bless.

Thank you for talking with my son's widow also. If you would like a copy Of the 2 photos emailed to you, please let me know. I know we are so very proud of our fallen heroes, but we miss them so.

To the family of Capt. Nathanael Doring.

I saw the tribute to the troops on Nate last night and felt moved to send you this note. It was clear that Nate was an awesome guy. Great character, integrity, strength - a true to life hero.

I work for a firm that lost 295 colleagues on 9/11 and I'm thankful for those, like Nate, that gave so much to keep us free.

I know that you will see him again. You have our utmost respect and sympathy.

August 16, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Dear Doring Family,

It was with fearful reservations that just today I looked through the many faces featured in this week's Navy Times as they honored those service members that have sacrificed all. I told my co-worker, "I'm always afraid to look at these for fear I might see...."

My breath stopped, my eyes welled.

I was Nate's Primary (T-34C) Flight Instructor at NAS Whiting Field. He was my fourth flight student ever and my first Marine student - a fact which he, jokingly, never let me forget.

Being a new Instructor Pilot, I'm not sure which one of us scared the other more often. But I clearly remember the moments heading home after preparing him for his first checkride. Oct. 24, 2000 - I had thrown everything including the kitchen sink at him and he excelled at it all. He could even draw out the local area maps better than me (artist that he was).

I remember him being very concerned and devoted to his son; being very strong in character and confidence; and proud to be a Marine Officer and an Aviator.

God blessed our Nation by bringing Nate to service. May He continually bless you as you remember him.

May God comfort the Doring family this Memorial Day. Thank you Captain Nathaniel Doring for giving your life so bravely for the United States of America.

Thank you Captain Lisa Doring for you service and courage.

I felt compelled to find this guest book after seeing the photos in the book "Where Valor Rests."

I never met Nathaniel, but knowing good men like him serve makes me want to be a better American...a nicer human being.

I am grateful always. Thank You both.

You have my deepest sympathies, I will be praying for your family. I'm sorry for the delayed response, I found out about Nate's death in MOAA Magazine, they did a wonderful spread on Arlington National Cemetery. I had the privilege of befriending Nate in flight school. I enjoyed his company at the squadron and on the soccer field. I still remember stories he’d tell about his son. I have gained a true admiration for the Marine Corps and thoroughly enjoyed the time I was able to spend with Nate when I knew him.

We are sorry this is late, we have just come across this fantastic website. What a way to honor these brave heros.
We can't imagine what you have been going through since being notified of the death of your young Warrior. The Military and families all over the USA and world are grieving with you and praying for you. What a very brave individual you have in your family that would give up a life for their homeland and its people so they can remain free. Your Freedom Fighter has served the Country above and beyond the call of duty, let no one ever tell you different. With the mission now completed your Warrior has been redeployed to Heaven to sit on the right hand of the Supreme Commander and Chief. The Father above has Nathanael in his arms and will give him peace as well as eventually easing your pain and suffering. God speed to you and Capt. Nathanael J. Doring, our HERO. We are so proud of them that are willing to sacrifice for this great Nation, THANK YOU.

To the family of Capt. Nathanael J. Doring:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 27 May, 2007. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “Remembering” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org
If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,

Alex will never forget his Dad. He has all Nate's soccer metals, his service metals, lots of photos and the jacket, like his Dad's, that Nate's platoon presented to him. All these items that are so precious to Alex are displayed on one wall in his room. He talks about his Dad often and every night his prayers end the same “God bless Mommy and my Daddy up in Heaven and help me to be the best I can be. In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.” Alex has lots of people in his life that love him and will help him remember his Dad. Each time he visits his Oma and Opa in MN, Nate’s best friend, Dan spends time with Alex teaching him games that his Dad enjoyed when he was young and sharing his memories of Nate with Alex.
I spent Thanksgiving and Xmas with my daughter and Alex. This was the first Xmas that Alex hasn’t seen or talked to his Dad. His Daddy was on his mind a lot. He asks me if I thought they had Xmas in Heaven. He is a very intelligent young man, he will always remember that his Father was a hero but more important, I think he will always remember the relationship and love he shared with his Daddy.
God Bless, Nate

“Paid in Full”
To Honor The Service of Fallen and Injured Marines

Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full

We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward

What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our hearts we will cherish your lives

Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the Few, the Proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us

They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown

Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full

Lisa Doring, Capt USMC

I want to thank everyone who left such kind words here. Especially friends, family, and fellow Marines that knew him and shared your personal thoughts. Your words provide a little comfort in this devastating time for me, Alex and his family.
Alex, I am always here for you, and I hope that should there ever be something you'd like to know about your Daddy please ask. He loved you dearly and only ever wanted the best for you, as do I. I will never be far away and will see you as often as I can, as I know your Daddy would want you to have the same opportunities as you would have had he still been here. Don't ever forget, Alex, your Daddy is still with us. He will never leave us, Alex. Somedays you may even feel him near. Just know he is always watching over you. We will see him again. I love you.
To my loving husband, words can not even express my feelings. I just thank the Lord for every treasured moment that I had with you, from the long talk we had the night we met that started it all, our beautiful picture perfect wedding day, and until I laid my head on your flag draped coffin most of the trip home from Iraq and at Arlington and every wonderful moment in between. I treasure each of those moments along the way and look forward to being with you again. You showed me the very depths of true love and taught me how to love and live more deeply than I could ever dream. You made me a better person and made me happier than I ever could have imagined. Nate, you were the "white knight" that rode into my life out of my dreams. You were and still are my "rock" and I will always be your "rose". I will always love you. Your loving and adoring wife, Lisa

I ask you Dear Lord to help this family when times are rough and lead them down the road to faith. In Jesus Sweet Name I Pray....Amen

For most of my grandson’s summers, he has a schedule. He spends part of his summer with me in Tennessee, and then I take him to the airport where either his Oma or Opa Doring is waiting to take him to Minnesota. From Minnesota he usually joins his Dad and flies to California or where ever to finish out his summer, then makes it back to Delaware and Mom a couple days before school starts. This year the plan was for his Dad to fly to MN from Iraq and spend a couple weeks with Alex and his family.

Alex was brave and made it through the memorial services and the service at Arlington very well. The last few nights after we are finished with the book we are reading and before our prayers. He has started a “lets talk about Dad time.” He shares his memories of his Dad and asks me questions about Dad being there when he was born. I tell him about things his Dad did with him when he was a baby. The final ness of his Dad’s death is sinking in on him hard at times. The last couple of night it has brought him to tears when he tells me he won’t get to do anything with Dad this summer. He said I know he is happy in Haven but I wish he had more time, he was going to teach me stuff and I still have lots of questions I want to ask him. I can’t kiss this hurt and make it all better. I can only listen, answer his question the best I can, be honest, tell him his Dad was indeed a fine man, and hold him and cry with him. He is so proud of his Dad. He got a hair cut today and he asks for it to be cut like Dad’s. He said I am going to make my Dad proud and when I grow up I am going to be a Marine and a pilot just like my Dad. I PRAY IF THAT DAY COMES, THERE WILL BE NO WARS. Nate, please watch over him. He speaks of you often with so much pride in his voice. He has a picture of a guardian Angel above his bed given to him by your Mom. Now he says you are his guardian angel. A big part of you lives on in your son. You have made a lasting impression and he says he will never forget you and I believe him. I will do everything in my power to help him keep that memory alive.

God bless you Dorings (Minnesota) and Lisa (glad to finally meet you) and Alex on your tough road ahead. Don't lose hope:

Robert Frost once said, “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”

Alex, I was fortunate to know your dad since the 5th grade—we grew up together in Minnesota and our lives crossed paths many times thereafter. As kids, we were part of an inseparable triad—Nate, Adam, and myself. As middle schoolers, Adam and I were a bit mischievous often taking the “well traveled road,” however Nate always took “the road less traveled” and kept us thinking about the right direction. Later in life, that courage manifested itself as Nate continued to prove that he would take the road less traveled. He was determined to become a military pilot and went to great lengths to accomplish this goal and dream—and he did it. He was determined to live his life doing what he believed was right—and he did it. He was determined to always be a father no matter how far his job might take him—and he did it. He did a lot of things because he took the road less traveled by, and that did make all the difference. He sure left his mark!—now the road is clearly visible so that others can follow in his footsteps—the road he traveled by. I haven’t met you yet, but hope to someday share the memories I have of your dad. I know that you’ll always remember your dad and the road he traveled by so that one day you’ll see him again. He is a great hero and friend—and I’ll definitely miss him.

One day I hope to revisit the Pizza Port in Solana Beach, CA where Nate and I used to eat pizzas and drink “Sharkbite Red” over conversation. As I continue to carve my path in life—I’ll remember Nate’s road—and for me, that will make all the difference.

Dear Doring Family,

I did not have the privilage of knowing your wonderful husband, father and son. He sacrificed his life for the cause of freedom, for you and countless families. May God bless your American hero & give him rest till we all meet one day.

Words can not express the gratitude all we Americans owe for your ultimate sacrifice. God bless you always. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I did not know Capt Doring but I grieve for the loss of another brave young man.

May his family and friends find peace and comfort in their fond memories of Nate.

All of America shares in the loss of our Hero.

My flag flies in honor of Nate and all of our troops overseas and in our homeland.

To the Doring Family,

Although I only had the privilege of meeting Nate a few times, he left a lasting impression on my family and myself. I cannot express enough personal gratitude for the sacrifices that Nate and all the others serving this wonderful country, have done to ensure the safety of my family. I thank you, and may God comfort you.

To Alex-most children growing up, when asked whom their heroes are, often respond by saying their dad is. You, my friend, did truly have a hero for a father. When you are asked later in life who you hero is, you can stand up and proudly proclaim "Capt. Nate "Chatters" Doring, USMC."
