Hello,

We wanted you to know that we will be honoring and remembering your loved one this holiday season. We are sending Care Packages to our deployed troops in his name. Each package will carry the name, photo, service branch, rank and hometown of Merideth L. Howard US Army Sergeant 1st Class.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families, friends and many others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

I remember her well and think of her often. We were at Ft Bragg together and had enough similarities in our past to hang out with one another. She was always smiling. I know it has been many years but we are a lesser country without her here. I can't imagine the family feelings. Mine haven't gone away so I know theirs haven't either. if you are reading this, we have not forgotten. She will always be in my heart.

It has been 14 years since that terrible day. My dear sister-in-law - you are not forgotten. Your service and sacrifice remain alive in my military classroom every day in South Korea where I've been coordinating instruction in convoy operations and 'convoy live fire' since March of 2013. I keep your warrior spirit alive in the hearts of our new soldiers.

It's been well over a decade now, but I still think of her. Especially on Memorial Day. We were bunk mates at Bragg before deployment. She was headed to Afghanistan and I was headed to Iraq. A bunch of us went out one night, and I won the flaming hot oyster eating challenge with her encouragement. I was just a Specialist back then, and Sgt. Howard was always very supportive and understanding of my young age and naive ways. One day I came back from training and her bunk was empty. Her unit had moved out. She left a note on my bunk, telling me to be careful since I was going to the "more dangerous" Iraq. I wish I could have said goodbye or thanked her for taking care of me. I also found a card her husband had written her still in the springs above her bed. I wonder if I still have it, and the note, buried in my memory boxes. I treasured them for years. In any case, I still think about her, and miss her...

I didn't know Meredith well but I did talk to her and Robert just before they rolled out of Bagram. They both were in good spirits and devoted to their mission. At all times, I wear a simple black wrist bracelet with their names and the date on it in their memory.

Will not give my name but i was there straight after the explosion. I worked for a PSC protecting the U.S. Embassy at that time and took over the scene until US / UK forces arrived. As OIC at that time i dealt with the unfortunate giving of KIA over the radio and other things which had to been done. To the family they both were teated with respect and dignity from us and taken to American soil at the U.S. Embassy ASAP. I am sorry for your loss and has always been in my memory.

There is a plaque in her honor at Bagram Airbase hospital according to "JP" a Special Forces Major from the 7th Group and a personal friend. His HQ signed a flag - and had it flown in an F-15E strike eagle on a weeks worth of combat missions. It is making its way back to me for family presentation.

I trained with SFC Howard in early 2006 at Ft. Bragg - we were all learning new Civil Affairs skills and things generally weren't very well organized. That caused a lot of the service members (Army, Navy, Air Force) to complain about how things were progressing, but not SFC Howard! I remember her for her sunny personality, bright smile, and the fact she looked at the bright side of everything!

I remember she received a box of cookies from a family member and shared them with us all - Those cookies were soooo good!!! I had a key-lime frosted cookie, and I can still remember how good it tasted. She was generous to everyone and the best kind of person to represent American ideals and values.

Our training group deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, and when word of her death reached us in Iraq, we were all so overwhelmed with sadness. Not only did we lose a shipmate, but the world lost a bit of its brightness.

I think of her often and wish her husband well.

I was wondering if there was somewhere Meredith would have wanted to go, because I can add a note to the webpage so that other geocachers will bring it there. I'm at Fort McCoy Wisconsin -almost 4 years to the day when last there - I received the terrible news.

Merideth - I will never forget you, your good cheer and devotion to my brother-in-law Hugh.

So the family and all will know - the 91st Command Group - then the 91st Division (higher HQ to the 6399th RTU) has also added you to their honor roll and will dedicate your memory as a member of the 91st - now at Fort Hunter-Liggett on September 11th 2010.

Friends of mine in the 7th Special Forces Group HQ - now in Afghanistan -will fly an American flag in your honor, sign it - fly it in an F-18 conducting Close Air Support to Special Forces and will send it onto me for presentation to Hugh...

This is such a painful trip for me.

Let it be known to all who come here that Merideth was my friend. I am well aware that when we look at the past we have a tendency to recall only the good and to dismiss the bad. The most phenomenal thing about Merideth is that I can not remember her ever being anything but kind and caring. Even when she was upset, she never hurt. I keep her Memorial bracelet with its “KIA 8 September 2006” on a shelf at eye level so she can remind me everyday to be a better person. This is the best tribute in her honor that I can think of.

From time to time I return to the numerous web-sites that do honor to Merideth's service. I never want to forget her sacrifice and I want to remember that there are many who still mourn her. Merideth was a dear friend of mine when we both lived in Corpus Christi, and I always admired her strenght and courage, and her wonderful humor.

Thanks for everything kid! Everytime I see the scar on my shin, I'll think of you, and the mad dash we made in the dark to dive in the swimming pool! I jumped short, and you made it - but you taught me to "laugh it off", and I'm grateful. You touched a lot of lives.

Meredith,
You were always so welcoming, so giving, so generous with your laughter and hospitality. I will never forget those New Year's Days at your home where you made sure that we ate black eyed peas for the New Year. You opened your home and heart to me and even drove so far out of your way on a business trip to visit me in veterinary school. Your house felt like a home away from home. I miss the way you would shake your head when you'd laugh. You gave so much more than you ever received. You are deeply missed.

I had the wonderful opportunity to serve with SFC Meridith Howard at FOB MetharLam, Afghanistan in 2006. I was an Infantryman assigned to B Co 1-102nd Infantry Det 1. Myself and the other infantrymen were SECFOR for the PRT and the FOB. SFC Howard was the nicest, loving, caring, friendliest, person I have ever known. She was always upbeat and optimistic about our mission in Afghanistan. She was extremely dedicated to helping the people of Afghanistan and never complained about working too much or not getting enough rest. She constantly volunteered for missions and volunteered to be a turret gunner on those missions as well. I remember her always constantly preparing for missions and cleaning her 240B machine gun on her down time. I would walk by her and chat with her informally about anything and everything and she would always listen and offer advice and positive opinions. She was one of the finest NCO's I have ever known and she always respected the enlisted soldiers below her . She never ever abused her rank or threw her weight around. It has taken me a long time to write in this guest book because I had to deal with my own personal issues from serving in Afghanistan. I have been thinking about SFC Howard lately because I am doing a graduate school project about women serving in the combat zone. Frankly, I could not have met or thought about a better female soldier that I could discuss about to my classmates and professor. In closing, I would just like to give my sincere condolences to her husband, family, and friends. I am proud to have known and served with SFC Howard and I feel that she did make a difference in the lives of the Afghani children and citizens. SHE WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

She was a wonderful woman. She had an amazing laugh - very infectious. My husband and I rented a cottage in the back of her house the year we became engaged to be married (1994). She was so sweet and so caring. Her and her husband (boyfriend at the time) were always so kind to us. I was so upset when I heard about her death. My first thought was of how Hugh must feel. It was nice to hear that they had finally gotten married. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. God bless.

Those we love remain with us
for love itself lives on,

Those we love can never be

When I was in the military women were not allow in combat and to know a fellow sister made it to show that women have what it take makes me proud very proud and honor to be a sister that also wore the uniform to serve my country. So long ago but yet it seem like yesturday. You will not be forgotten. You make every women proud to say you are one of us except you actually got to go where the battle was at. Dear Merideth,

Well it has been a year. It isn't hard to believe because it has been a very long year!!! I have tried writing before but have not succeeded.

Just wanted to share something that will maybe make you smile or think we have finally gone off of our rockers. Krista and I got tattoos to mark the anniversary of your death.

Krista's is an M with angel wings and it is on the back of her right shoulder. You now have the task of officially being her guardian angel.

Mine is a yellow rose with a butterfly and a chinese symbol meaning immortal. Lots of meaning there. The yellow rose is obvious, the butterfly symbolizes transformation and the immortal follows the belief of some religions that as long as you are remembered you are still with us.
oh and yeah it is on my left forearm, left being the side connected to the heart.

So many times over the last year people have said that you didn't realize how much you meant to people. In my case it is because I never told you. I am trying to take this huge error I made with you and not repeat it.

Love you,

Frances

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Dear Merideth and Family

This is a fitting day to honor, admire and pay tribute to women soldiers. Mother’s Day is a day that pays tribute to the woman that is always a caretaker, courageous and a protector of her family. As a Mother hen spreads her wings to protect her chicks from death and will sacrifice her life if needed, so has Merideth spread her golden wings to protect each American Citizen from evil and give back to each one of us another day of Freedom. We are eternally in your debt for your sacrifice. You have established your right of Motherhood and to be in the presences of the Creator of the universe.

May God bless your family.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

She's one of the toughest non-complaining girls I've ever met, she did her jobs and all of them well. I was facing a decision in my life and I felt alone in what I was going to choose. She made the same decision in her life, that's really helped me come to terms and know that it's ok for me to make the choice I have. She was a blast to work with here in mehtar lam, and greatly appreciated even though I didn't say it.

I was a sophomore at King High School when Meredith was a senior (1972). We had a class together (don’t remember what, maybe P.E.) and she was always so nice to everyone. Some seniors acted superior to sophs, but Meredith was a friend to all. I don’t remember many people from thirty years ago, but as soon as I heard her name on the news, I knew it must be her, which just shows how much impact her personality must have had on me. I am so sorry for your loss.

TO MEREDITH HOWARD'S FAMILY AND ALL WHO KNEW AND LOVED HER...

THE ONLY KNOWLEDGE I HAVE OF MEREDITH IS THAT, THAT I'VE READ HERE, BUT YOU MUST TAKE COMFORT IN THE TRIBUTES POSTED BY THOSE WHO DID KNOW HER.

WORDS.....CAN BE SO INADEQUATE, LET ME ONLY SAY THAT I PRAY YOU FIND COMFORT AND WHAT A MARVELOUS PERSON SHE OBVIOUSLY WAS FROM THE ACCOLADES

LIFE IS AROUND YOU-BELIEVE IT OR NOT,
ALTHOUGH IT APPEARS THAT SOME HAVE FORGOT,
LIFE IS FOR LIVING-AND SKIMMING THE CREAM,
NOT FOR THE SOUR MILK-AS TO SOME IT MIGHT SEEM.......

MEREDITH OBVIOUSLY CHOSE THE CREAM WHILE SHE WAS HERE...

GOD BLESS YOU ALL...

M.
Yesterday, was such a hard day for me. I let myself wallow in the sadness of not having you to turn to, even though I know you would NEVER have accepted my behaviour yesterday. It would have been one more time, your good German roots would have won out, and you would have told me to 'snap out of it'.

But I miss you so very much, I cannot believe it's been just one month since you've been gone. My days don't seem as bright, my future without you to look to and the holidays without you are seeming dismal.

And, I'm saddened to say, nothing much has changed in the war arena, there are more hero's to report, more destruction to talk about.

I so want to make your passing, make a difference, so no other best friend or sister goes through what I've felt and done this last 30 days.

I love you so much and appreciate all that you gave us your friends and family, our Country, the people of Afghanastian and to humanity, in general.

I won't forget you and I'll do my best to not let anyone else forget, the incredible person you are.

With my sincere love,
Rebekah

As an ex-colleague of Merideth's I was very saddened to hear the bad news from Afghanistan. Although it has been a few years since I last saw Merideth, I had recently been receiving regular email updates written by Merideth via another mutual friend. Although life in Afghanistan did not sound like fun, it was apparent that Merideth accepted her role in the army with the same enthusiam and dedication that she had in civilian life. Judging by the number of entries in this Guest Book, it is apparent she touched many lives and will be sorely missed by all.

First and foremost, my condolences go out to the family and friends of SFC Meredith Howard. You will forever be in my prayers. I was part of the Mehtar Lam team that SFC Howard replaced. I got the opportunity to spend a few weeks with her and the new crew prior to departing Afghanistan. SFC Howard left a lasting impression on me that I will never forget. She was motivated and determined to make a difference in the lives of the Afghan people and the people whom came to know her. She was the ultimate soldier, and it showed in every aspect of her daily accomplishments. As the senior enlisted advisor to the PRT Commander, I learned so.. much from her. When I was having a bad day I could always depend on SFC Howard to make it better. She had a funny sense of humor and a smile that would let you know that everything was going to be alright. When I recieved the news of her death I felt physically drained. SFC Howard was a very important part of a puzzle that can never be replaced. She will be missed dearly. We all feel the pain of this great loss, but none greater than that of her family. May God bless each and everyone of you.

To Merideth's family and friends,

Merideth truly was the unique, fun, smart and lovely person everyone has written about. I knew Howie in high school and we were roommates our first year at Texas A&M university. A fellow classmate called me with the news of Howie's death. I had not looked at the front page of our newspaper here in College Station yet. What a stab of shock to hear the news. I have received several phone calls and hear there is to be a special ceremony for her at the football game halftime tomorrow. My husband and I knew Howie well. We both agree the world will never be the same again without her. Our hearts go out to her family and her husband who made such a wonderful statement about her beautiful blue eyes. I wish we could do more. It still does not seem possible she is really gone. Howie, you will always be remembered in our hearts. We'll still hear your laughter and see your sparkling eyes, and feel your kind touch. God bless your family. All our love, Nate and Rhonda(Wiley) Bauer

I am a United States Navy veteran who served in the first persian gulf war. I would like to extend my deepest sympathy for your lose. I would also like to tell you how grateful I am that there are Americans that will put service to their country before service to themselves. May God bless you.

I had the honor to serve as SFC Howard's Commander at Mehtar Lam for two months and work with her for an additonal month before I departed Laghman Province for Nuristan Province where I still continue to serve.

She came onto my Forward Operating Base with the new group of Provincial Reconstruction Team personnel at the end of April and I was to change command with her Commander. He broke his wrist and I remained in command for an additional two months working closely with SFC Howard and the rest of the new Team.

To say she was a phenomenal soldier is an understatement. She was responsible for managing the Commander's Emergency Response Fund (CERP) in addition to her Civil Affairs job. She replaced a high speed Civil Affairs NCO who had developed an excellent approach to how we managed CERP at the PRT. SFC Howard came in and made the best CERP Program in Afghanistan even better. She was organized and detailed. She made our program one to envy but more importantly one that delivered millions of dollars in development to Laghman and Nuristan Provinces. She was one of a kind and an absolute pleasure to work with.

I am a career Infantry Officer with over 20 years of continuous service on active duty in defense of our nation. The hardest day I've ever had was the day she and SSG Paul died in Kabul. It was a black day for me. I have been in Afghanistan now for over 21 months continously and I have never felt so frustrated or angry than on that day. I am genuinely optimistic about Afghanistan's future but her death took even my optimism away. I recovered after thinking back on the many talks she and I had about what CERP, the PRT, and the Coalition presence was doing for Afghanistan. I mentally dedicated my last few months in this country to her memory.

I will leave Afghansitan, lord willing, in November. My last act will be to celebrate Thanksgiving with my Team in Eastern Nursitan. I will give thanks for how the lord has blessed me and my various team mates since my arrival in Afghanistan in January 2005. I will give thanks for SFC Merideth Howard. I am a better person for having served with her. She made a difference in the lives of many people and for that she will always be remembered.

I salute her and all the members of the Civil Affairs community who truly serve selflessly every day. They come not to take lives but to make lives better. I will never forget her smiling face. I am sure there is a special place she now occupies in heaven. May God continue to bless and keep her, may he bless her family, may he bless the members of the Mehtar Lam Team, and may he bless the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines who do his work each and every day in Afghanistan.

God bless us all and God Bless the USA.

From Eastern Nuristan,

LTC Anthony Feagin

Past Commander Mehtar Lam PRT and current Commander Nuristan PRT

My deepest sympathy to your family for your loss. I never met Merideth or anyone in your family, but she sounded like someone I would love to have known. From all that I have read she sounds like a trailblazer and after reading about her it seemed just like her to have been serving her country in a war zone at the age of 52. I only hope I can be half the person she was. Thanks Merideth. I hope to meet you when I get to heaven.

To the Family of Sgt. lst Class Merideth Howard:

My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday.

I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss her, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by her presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is those wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.

Meredith lived, “…What we do for others is our legacy, and lives on forever….” Having worked with Meredith for a dozen years, I have nothing but grateful and happy remembrances of her as a person, her chosen profession, her dedication to our Country, and extend my sympathy to her family for your loss.

As I write this brief note, I will never forget her identifiable laugh, which will last in my memory forever.

Dearest Writers and Well Wishers,

I had the sincere pleasure of being Merideth Howard's best friend, or... perhaps, she was my best friend. For nearly 22 years. In fact, she was my Maid of Honor at my wedding in 2004.

Apparently, she had many best friends. In fact, it's difficult to believe I am writing this at all...I would never have concieved that Merideth would be gone from this world. Never.

IN retrospect, Merideth taught me more about life, love, forgiveness, comfort and honor, then I could every concieve of returning to this world.

Merideth found me in a home for "Christian Women" in transition in San Francisco, in the mid 80's, where she herself had decided to stay as well.

Immediately, I could tell Merideth was intelligent, warm, loving and incredibly to her "word". What you saw, was what you got....

Merideth, however found me broken... lost and without an anchor. That is what Merideth became for me... she essenitally became my Anchor, my Mother, Sister and most beloved best friend in the following years.

Never did she waste words or sentitment, often you know what she thought... or perhaps what her good "German House Frau" Grandmother would have thought of a situation.

I, can never begin to thank the World, her parents or the Good Lord, for the love, care and consideration that Merideth has shown upon me.

It is my duty from now on, to do the same to those I meet who might come to be... broken as I was!

Here's to you my friend, my dearest Emma... I will love you forever... until we meet again!

We feel a real loss in her passing and want to extend our sympathy to her husband, Hugh and family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Merideth was a caring, generous women and a significant influence for good in others' lives. Even while commissioned in Afghanistan, she would ask for school supplies to be sent in care packages for those children and teachers in the villages she helped restore.

She accomplished so many “Firsts” in her life time that most will only dream of. And for those who will only read or write about her, I would say they have missed the opportunity of having met a person of true beauty. The legacy of love and compassion she has taught me and my family will live on through her memory. We will not forget her ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and this country.

We will always remember Merideth as an outstanding, honorable, honest and cheerful woman who loved life, family and friends. We will miss her warmth and humor. Our family is privileged to have known and worked with her.

Forever in our hearts,

AM Ledbetter

Merideth had a wicked sense of humor. Every time I saw her she had a smile on her face. May all couples have the joy her and Hugh had together. Even though she will be missed she will always be in our memories.

The world was a better place for having Merideth in it. I know I am a better person for having her for a friend for a quarter of a century. I will miss her. And am oh so glad we went paragliding.

Keep them in line in heaven Merideth.

Words cannot express how sad we are about Merideth's passing. My Wife, Lori and I were blessed and honored to know and love Merideth. She was 'one of a kind'. We got to know her through work, but we soon became friends. She loved to play tennis and her love of life and travel were second to none. She had the most infectious laugh...She would start laughing and then we would laugh, and then she would laugh, and so on.

The last and most heart-breaking correspondence we had with her was we discovered she and Hugh got married, just before her deployment to Afghanistan. I asked her when, oh when were we going to have a reception for their wedding! She said just as soon as she got back home to the U.S.A.

We will all miss her. God bless her.
