I had the pleasure of meeting Gary when he and Elliot spent a few days with us right before they enlisted. I enjoyed seeing them together, so full of life. I will always remember seeing them horse around in Lake Roosevelt until they collapsed on the beach from exhaustion. I am grateful for having known him, he will be missed.

My deep sympathy for the loss of your son, Gary. Each time a young man or woman gives their life in the cause of freedom, the world is a less brighter place to live. I share your sorrow and hope you find the faith to carry on. I lost my husband to an IED in Baghdad in 2004. May we all remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and the families they left behind.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Gary, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Never forgotten..........
Kathy & Doug Hull
August 12, 2008
Our family will always remember and cherish the memories made with Ron, Mary, Robby and Gary, especially with Doug and I being chosen to be Gary's godparents, such an honor. We always got such a kick out of Gary, a funny, good looking kid right from birth! Too many stories to recite...Brian and David, our sons, the same age as Robby and Gary always kept us laughing when they were little...the conversations revolved mostly around poop and pee during our visits together as this was amusing to them in their early years..we were lucky to have had a lunch with Gary and his parents before he went back for his last tour of duty, with me stealing the check from Ron and apparently Gary being impressed with my stealthy move to get it!..our hearts were broken the day we got the call from Ron about Gary's passing, Gary will forever be in our hearts and memories along with Ron, Mary, Robby and Hillary and we will be forever in awe of his bravery and courage. Love and Miss you, Doug, Kathy, Brian and David Hull

Gary,
I raced home as fast as I could in hopes of getting to my computer while it was still Memorial Day so I could let you know that I thought about you. It's been almost 4 years since we last saw each other. And while it'll be many years before I get to see you again, I know that you'll be with Jesus until I get there. I held my wife's hand as she drifted to sleep carrying my second son, Zachary, as my oldest son, Camren, slept in his carseat. As I sat in the dark of the Jeep looking at my wife and then looking at my son in the mirror I thought of how Hillary must miss you. On this day we remember her as well and what she gave up that we might continue to live under a flag that flies freely. I thought of how you must've wished you could've raised a family and I want you to know, that in respect for you, I will not take mine for granted and will cherish every moment that I get with them.
Marines have a job in Heaven. They guard the gates. I hope your face is the first I see when I approach those gates.

To the Koehler Family,
Gary and all of you will always be in my toughts. I served with Gary in Iraq 2004, and some time in the SS plt. He became a good friend to me. He was one of the best Marines I ever met, and an even better friend. I will miss him dearly, and will keep all of you in my prayers. Forgive me for taking so long to write, But be assured that he was always in my thoughts.

As November 1, 2007 approached and passed No one could begin to seem to understand what family members and loved ones of Gary were going to endure emotionally. This has had to be one of the hardest days that you will ever have to re-live and I just want to extend a shoulder and our heart to the family. Gary had such a zest for life and that is something to admire. I was looking through some old depolyment pictures and videos a couple weeks ago and had to laugh because Gary was being himself silly and carefree, I guess those are the memories that we need to cherish. He will never be forgotten. Hillary, Mr. & Mrs. Koehler and family on this anniversary our thoughts and prayers go out to your family. God Bless

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Koehler,
This is as painful a day as you will ever experience. How I wish that it was within my power to undo the death of your Gary. I have read the tributes to him, what a fine young man you raised. Your hearts must be bursting with pride for the beautiful person that he was even as they remain shattered with the loss of his life.
In time, the pain in your heart finds a place to rest and your life will resume with an altered pace. Gary will always be with you because you will always remember him. People he knew and loved will always remember him and even those who never had the honor of knowing him, as I, will always remember him and forever be thankful for his service to this country and the great gift that he gave.
May God bring solace to your broken hearts and bless you with peace.
Most sincerely,

It has already been a year since you have passed and it only seems like yesterday you were with us. There was something that was said at the funeral and i still repeat in my head everyday and it was read as "As long as one preson remebers you, you will never be forgotten", and i can honestly say that you will never be forgotten. May you look down upon your friends and family and be proud of how we carry your memory.Rest in peace Gary.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

“Paid in Full”
In Honor of The War Against Terrorism’s Fallen and Injured Marines
Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full
We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward
What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our minds we will cherish your lives
Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the few, the proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us
They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown
Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full

I was a member of the Patriot Guard that stood watch out side of Gary's funeral. I would LOVE for the family to give me permission to create a web page dedicted to this fallen hero. I would also love a copy of the words spoken by his two friends Justin Montgomery and Kevin Hlavaty. I did not get to hear anyone else, since we went back outside to maintain our posts.
Because of thier speeches for the first time in my life I am going to read the book East of Eden. His funeral touched my heart and I learned Gary was a person who loved in the truest sense of the word..

I had the honor of briefly being Cpl Koehler's platoon commander when he first joined the Scout Sniper Platoon with 1/8. I will always remember him as incredibly sharp and motivated. He was a true Marine warrior and dedicated and unselfish in his service to his country.
I promise that your brothers carry you in our hearts always and you will never, ever be forgotten.

To Hillary & the entire Koehler Family,
To say we are sorry for your loss does not properly express our feelings and thoughts right now. Gary was so much more than just a friend and fellow Marine to both Jesse and I. Gary will always be remembered for his contagious smile and his “full of life” personality. He will forever be missed and our memories of him will always be cherished.
You are truly a courageous woman Hillary with a heart of gold. Your genuine concern for others during this difficult time is greatly appreciated and admired. Gary is looking down upon you with pride. We are always here to help you and support you.
Thank you Gary for the unending laughs, the countless memories, and your loyal friendship. You will always be remembered and loved.

To the Koehler Family
My deepest sympathy on the passing of your son Gary and a great debt of gratitude for his willingness to serve our country. I didn't know Gary but I have son the same age and two brothers who are Marine Corps veterans. As a parent one always wants children to succeed at doing want they really like and obviously your son took pride in being a Marine. Losing someone just getting started in life is certainly a tragedy but you will have lots of wonderful memories. We lost two young uncles in World War II and they are always remembered. May the good Lord help you through what has to be the most difficult time for any parent.

Dear Koehler family,
I was part of the crew that flew your loved one home to Michigan today. It was a very powerful moment pulling up to the gate and seeing Gary's family and fellow Marines there. It was a honor to fly a hero home.

Hillary and the Koehler family,
Words can not express how deeply sorry we are for your loss. Gary touched both of our lives with his fun and electric personality. The very first time Amy met him she thought he was so hilarious, a quality that we will always cherish when we think about Gary. He touched Eric's life in a way that only a fellow good and honorable Marine can, and for these reasons, we are very thankful to have known him.
Please know that you can lean on us anytime and we are thinking about you as we remember Gary with a smile.
With deepest sympathy and love,

Dear Koehler Family,
Even though I never met your son Gary I feel like I knew him since Kevin talked about him as much as he talked about his own son. He was considered part of their family and I know he will be terribly missed by all.

To Gary's family and friends-
My family and I are praying for you and your family during this difficult time. We send our deepest empathy as we lost our Marine on 11/30/05 in Fallujah. We are comforted to know that our Marines are serving their country with such honor and bravery. We are so proud of our Marines and all of our other service men and women for all that they have done and continue to do to keep us safe and to give us the freedom we have that so many take for granted.
They are true Heroes and need to always be remembered for their selflessness and sacrifice to better our world. We will forever be united in the loss of our heros. We are so sorry for your loss and hope our words will ease some of the pain, and maybe fill some of your emptiness.

I am Cpl. Koehler's recruiter. I remember when he and his buddy came into my office in February 2003. All they wanted was to be Marines. Gary was a good young man who came from a great family. I never met his wife, but I knew his parents well. I grieve along with you. My condolences to Gary's Wife and Parents.
